  • Hi everyone, it's Stephen here. In today's video, I want to open up about a difficult period of depression I went through recently and how I was able to find my way out of that dark place. As someone who has lived with schizophrenia since the age of 12, I'm no stranger to battling loneliness, sadness, and a sense that I've missed out on many everyday life experiences, but the last few weeks pushed me to a new low.
Finding Hope Amidst Depression and Schizophrenia
Welcome to a profound journey of overcoming, growth, and transformation. This is the story of Stephen, a young man navigating the turbulent waters of schizophrenia while striving for a semblance of normalcy and happiness in life. His tale is not just about the struggles with a mental health condition but a beacon of hope for many who find themselves in similar battles. Stephen’s CZcams channel, Surviving Schizophrenia with Stephen, serves as a platform for sharing his experiences, the lows, and the recent uplifts, and how he’s been coping and finding his way through the dense fog of depression.
    The Depths of Despair
Stephen’s journey into the depths of depression isn't a narrative woven overnight. Diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2012, he missed out on numerous "normal" life experiences. The fallout was significant - a disrupted education, isolation from peers, and the ensuing loneliness that crept in, casting a long shadow over his teenage years and beyond. This period was marked by intense demoralization, sadness, and profound isolation. But it’s crucial to underline that Stephen’s battle wasn’t just with schizophrenia but with the emotional scars it left, deepening the impact on his emotional well-being.
Despite making strides in managing his condition, gaining more energy, and improving mentally and physically, Stephen found himself trapped by the tendrils of the past. The stark realization of missed opportunities, especially during high school and the lack of romantic relationships, weighed heavily on him. This sorrow was not just a fleeting cloud but a storm that persisted, challenging his strides toward recovery.
    The Turning Point
Amid this emotional turmoil, Stephen faced a critical choice - to remain ensnared by despair or to find a sliver of hope and claw his way out. Choosing the latter, he embarked on self-improvement and mental liberation. The transformation was sparked by an introspective journey, which began with acknowledging the depth of his depression through a candid, unedited video meant for his CZcams audience. Although initially unable to share this raw depiction of his suffering, Stephen’s attempt to communicate his struggles became a pivotal moment of self-awareness and determination to change his narrative.
    The Road to Recovery
Stephen’s recovery is a testament to the power of small yet significant changes. Long walks became his solace and a source of strength, providing clarity and a fresh perspective on life. These walks weren't just physical activities but meditative journeys that allowed him to reflect plan, and dream of a brighter future. This newfound clarity led him to rediscover reading, a hobby he once loved but lost in the chaos of his illness. Through reading, Stephen found an escape and a way to stimulate and challenge his mind, further aiding his recovery process.
    Looking Forward
Today, Stephen stands as a figure of resilience, armed with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism. His journey underscores the importance of confronting and accepting one’s struggles, finding personalized coping mechanisms, and the transformative power of hope. By sharing his story, Stephen does not merely aim to destigmatize schizophrenia but to offer a message of perseverance and the possibility of a fulfilled life despite the odds.
Stephen’s story is a beacon for those battling their demons, showing that despair and loneliness do not signify the end. Instead, they can catalyze change, growth, and an eventual rise from despair. His channel, Surviving Schizophrenia with Stephen, continues to be a space of transparency, support, and encouragement for many navigating similar paths.
As we follow Stephen’s journey, we're reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless capacity for renewal. Here’s to Stephen and to all those fighting silent battles-may your paths find light, strength, and an abundance of hope.

As a fellow mental health CZcamsr, not hiding things and not sugarcoating is the best way to normalize this stuff, so thanks for sharing that clip with us! In the therapy program I attended (dialectical behavior therapy) we always talk about accepting things as the way they are within us but also knowing we can change. Sitting in one place for too long is something I avoid too, and changing things really helps me too. When it comes to loneliness… I feel that deeply at times. I remember when I got tired of telling tinder dates I had schizoaffective disorder so I put it in my bio and quit matching. I’d been doing well before but with that added? Nerfed. But how I view things now is I focus on me and being the best person I can be. And hopefully, if I’m lucky, someone will come along and want to be with me in that romantic way that I do crave some days. Until then, I’ll just be me. Great video Stephen! Stay strong, you rock! (And glad you’re doing well otherwise)

I`ve had no friends, or no contact with any, since 2017. I can`t deal with others anymore. My relatives nearby help me, but with that comes constant criticism of every single thing I like, say, want to do, or buy. "I don`t have a camera! Why do YOU need one?" Everything results in criticism and negativity. I keep my phone unplugged. All they know is something is wrong with my mind so that must mean I`m not intelligent in any way or even fully human I guess. I`m a just a "thing" and I should just be that, whatever it is, and do nothing else.

We help make my town inclusive and accessible for residents with all types of disabilities. Maybe your town has a disability commission too? I also help adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteering has not only helped me make friends, it has also helped me with my self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. It gives me a break from spending too much time in my own head. So then a favor and teach them how to maintain and have a strong mind. The treatment they have for this illness is mostly placebo in my opinion. They will still have the illness swing back around in time even if they are 100% compliant. Otherwise they’ll just be on government assistance their whole life. They’ll fall victim to people who mind f them, scammers, and police brutality. You have to have a solid foundation and be able to know what’s real and not. You have to teach them to control their emotions as well.

I am on Olanzapine 22.5mg. I started seriously doing Keto for just under a week. I found 2.5mg of Olanzapine was enough.
Here's a Keto recipe. I whisk 2 eggs and paprika with a fork in a bowl for 1 minute and pour on a hot sauce pan with melted butter. I add sliced extra mature cheese when omelette is nearly cooked. I eat 2 cheese omelettes a day. If you want try something a bit different try a cheese selection pack. Cheese also makes plain chicken taste, I tried goats cheese with chicken it was delicious.
I really like cheese omelette because it's so cheap and cost was my biggest reason for not doing Keto.
I supplement 2000mg of fish oil and a small shot of extra virgin olive oil a day.
I aim to have a meal at 2pm and a meal at 8pm.
I think it's worth noting do not take a reduced dose of medication if you are at risk of going back to mental hospital.
One of the reasons I decided to reduce medication so significantly is because I found it made lose motivation to do things like wake up as it made me sleep a extra 4-5 hours.
I do not have to use much cheese to make a tasty cheese omelette. Last night I had to take 22.5mg of Olanzapine as I noticed a increase in schizophrenia voices. I noticed that the strong dose of Olanzapine made me very hungry but still managed to only eat a bit of cheese and no carbs. I am doing Keto to lose weight and put my schizophrenia in remission. I think you need to do Keto for upto 4 months to say how much the diet is working for me. I think my schizophrenia is generally better thanks to the diet. I hope I can continue to constantly follow the diet to keep getting results.
If your interested in following someone on youtube thats had success with Keto diet recently check out Living Well with Schizophrenia.

I’m on a keto diet too for my schizophrenia. I’m on 10 mg olanzapine and I take 20 mg fluoxetine for years. I still haven’t gotten full keto, I am trying to. It’s very hard on olanzapine to do keto but I will not give up. Anyway, my second day on a keto diet and I feel great! I do take a lot of vitamins too, it’s important to take especially in the beginning to avoid worsening of the symptoms that usually happen at the beginning of the diet as our bodies adapt to the new source of fuel. I watched a lot of dr Palmer’s interviews on keto diet and it’s actually a medical breakthrough in treating mental illnesses! I think we are going to hear more about keto soon. 😊

You are human. You are coming alive. And it hurts. It’s supposed to. You have been hurt. Why wouldn’t you feel the severance?
However it is supposed to be fought. And that is the correct response. And if you do, you can establish some portion of a stable cycle. And trust in your capacity to handle different portions of it after you experience it.
Those systems when functioning correctly are supposed to kick in in response to trouble and crisis. Which cause a corrective action. Which leads to improved condition. Which leads to a higher moment, until the system spots the next challenge. And so on.
Yeah man. What happened to you is painful. I am not surprised to hear it hurts like that. But what more proof of recovery and growth, than that you took a more active role in your own existence? To learn how. You chose correctly in that moment.
Also. As for partners. It’s ok to take your time. Men’s value as partners takes a while to build anyway. And younger women prefer older men. You’ve got time, and time to learn and grow. It’s not as wild a journey as if you learned young, but you didn’t lose out on much. All that bachelor romanticizing is… It overlooks a great deal of embarrassing and uncomfortable self sabotage you don’t have to indulge. That you would’ve had to grow out of too. Young men are no less than half feral until they are 27 healthy or not.

Hi Steven. Sorry to hear you’re lonely and depressed. Volunteering is good for mental health. You can choose what you volunteer in as well. I found with my friends at first they didn’t want to know me because of my diagnosis. But I forgive them and arranged to meet up. They now know I’m the same kind person maybe even kinder. Basically you need to work at friendships and contact them yourself. It’s the same for everyone whether you suffer with mental health or not. You will find that with most if you contact them regularly they will contact you back eventually. But yes volunteering ids good. Wishing you all the best of luck. Stay well. It can be done. I’m a paranoid schizophrenic (sectioned 5 times) and I’ve put my schizophrenia into remission.

I have depression and anxiety and have also never been in a relationship (I'm several years older than you.) Friends are way easier and less anxiety to focus on. Even an online friend that you regularly interact with would be great. I have significant social anxiety and so committing to a scheduled repeated event like volunteering every week or even saying I will definitely go to this one event is very hard for me. But maybe you could find some lower stakes but still stimulating events at your library. My library has concerts, author talks even on zoom, and sometimes craft activities. Maybe it would be helpful to have a parent come with you until you feel more comfortable on your own. Also, have you considered attending a support group? There are NAMI groups and also Anxiety and Depression Assocation of America support groups, some of which meet online. Anyway, I'm happy to hear of how you were able to take positive action to lessen your depression.

Our past doesn’t identify our present nor future life. Loneliness is very common even with someone who doesn’t suffer with a mental illness. I am in that place also. A person who went through a divorce after over 30 yrs of marriage and 2 adults sons. I work hard on my mindset which is the culprit of our emotions. Let’s look at the blessings we have. Loving parents… supportive….family. In my case… my sons. Prayer, for me, lifts me up. You need to explore what can get you out of those hardest moments. My prayers are being sent to you, 🙏🙏🙏

Some people had a relationship and they wish they hadn’t. It’s difficult to go through a divorce. I think you should take one class in something you enjoy at a Community College to broaden your interests and take opportunity to see other people. Young people tend to think that most people is happy, but most people have only moments of happiness. Everybody face struggles. I think you are just bored. Keep yourself busy with something productive and enjoy this wonderful family you have.

Focus forward, Do not let the negative get you. I saw a fat laughing Buddha setting on top of a wave while a dragon tried to pull him down under the water. I learn the trick of the mind, one summer day I was breaking down because of too many cars. At an intersection I cried out, look at all these cars, a young guy responded what cars? All I see is the pretty ladies. I realized my mind was sucking me into a negative death spiral so I fought back and went into natures world.

Thank you very much dear Steven, take courage and keep up with the good work!! I also have like this problem years ago, and I also only go to Jesus Christ with my problem every day and night, for every minute and every second, because I really need somebody that I can trust and Who also can help my really, and I read the Word of God every day, for half an hour to whole an hour or more, and I try to pray every day at the feet of Jesus Christ also for ½ an hour or 1hour or longer and you know, the Dear Lord help me out!! Isnt He Wonderfull?? He really heal my spirit and my brain, and really He is Wonderfull, and I give my heart and my life to Him, and I invite God the Father and Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in whole my heart and in whole my life, and now I also know, that that when my time is over on earth, He will take my Home to Heaven!! And I cant wait to see Him!! Joh 3:16, because now I know that I belong to Him, our Wonderfull Creator!! Thank you!!
