As someone who also fell in love with MASH around the ages of 11-13, this entire love letter to the show speaks to me on every level. One thing that's been incredible has been seeing the show pick up new fans on sites like Tumblr, drawing in a specifically queer audience at that. Something about this show, in all its dated attitudes and boundary-pushing that feels tame by all modern sensibilities, continues to speak to us.

Honestly, with the backlash of this game and the way you tied the name to “the best of us”, I wonder if the next game WILL be something like “the best of us”-a bit corny for sure, but it could play into those cliche tropes more, put the main characters into horrible situations but give hope in a more cliche way. I definitely enjoyed that they gave unconventional stories and characters, but that isn’t to say I wouldn’t enjoy a cliche game either.

So this game adds lots of diversity when people complain about games or films with not a lot of it but a game like this where people die you are complaining about characters that you people asked to be diverse die? A lot of people died in this game a lot of them white too?

41:00 - I never saw it as accidental. I saw it as she knew they were all dead if they were caught so she made the heart wrenching active choice to save everyone else. I love M*A*S*H with my entire being. It makes me laugh, cry, cheer. It's been very difficult to watch the last couple of months though since the passing of my best friend and soul mate who would watch it with me and we'd discuss the episodes, even though it was about out 5 millionth time watching the series. One day I'll be able to watch it again without it making me sad he's not here to watch with me. I just got to the bit about the scene with Hawkeye and Margaret in "Where There's A Will, There's A War", which was his favourite scene and it completely disintegrated me This was a great video. Btw i missed it on the first watch, but in italian culture the association between horns and cuckoldery is still very strong. For example, an idiomatic form of saying "to cheat on someone" is "fare le corna a qualcuno" (to build/make horns for someone) and it is commonly understood that said horns are invisible to the one having them. I find it funny that the English speaking world lost this association while in italy (where the play is incidentally set) such connection is still very much alive

From the time it hit the prison arc, I've been saying Andor is really a documentary/study on fascism disguised as a D+ SW show. There are too many parallels to real world events and the struggles of people against oppression, imperialism and the history of colonialism for it be anything but a political statement and the only it got green lit is because the execs didn't quite understand what it's trying to say. At the same time, this is the most SW thing since Empire; it revolves entirely around the most important aspect of SW that got lost in the hype and commercialism: the politics of armed revolt against an oppressive state that is crushing everyone under its boot.

This and Stargate SG-1 are my two favorite shows of all time. Watched this on syndication with my folks as a kid and teenager in the late 90s/ 00s. Watched it from the beginning and when the episode of Col. Blake’s plane went down was rough to watch as a kid. Will say I really liked Col. Potter as he was like a father figure to most of them.

About 10 minutes in, when she talked about how Danny did things even hough she was afraid. I believe she was like that because before she worked at Bly, she did not confront what was wrong/happening in her life until it was too late and it turned out tragic for her and others in her life. So in Bly, she confronts things in that moment.

I think his death is perfect, while it doesn't entirely make sense in context. When you re-watch the show, the whole idea of ones past and carrying that weight transforms the show into something much more meaningful. The same way Spike died, is the same way many of his bounties died. With their past deeds tragically overwhelming them unpredictably leading to their deaths that leave their families and friends with nothing but grief. Carrying that weight is watching countless people die in front of you scrambling to survive, just as you're doing the same and ultimately the same happens to our protagonist. He doesn't live because he has plot armor, he dies because life is precious tragedy. The ending is so impactful because even if you don't fully realize it, you carry the weight of all those individuals that you probably can't even name Then you watch one last time as a member of your own family suffers the same fate which compounds all the real tragedy of the show, which up until the end, was masqueraded by the fun and light-hearted elements. It quickly goes from somewhat dark and gorey cowboy/sci-fi/jazz/noir/bounty hunting extravaganza; to the most sobering of realizations of the fragility yet tenderness of mortality. Spike nuanced his way into our hearts only to be gruesomely torn out, a weight we will never forget, but in order to live we must let go.

I admit, I bristled a bit at your part on Israel. But I ultimately think you say something very valuable that we on the left benefit from continuing to repeat out loud. The situation in Israel is not unique. I personally started speaking up because I don't want another middle-east conflict like the mid 2000's (not to mention the atrocities that have occurred before I was alive as well). We can absolutely make sure that we affirm to Jewish people and Israeli citizens that we want to dismantle these horrible systems and do not wish violence on civilians. It doesn't cost us anything to acknowledge that and will help longevity and unity as we hope to dismantle colonialism and white supremacy worldwide. In my opinion. I went into the movie knowing that everyone was going to die, and it was still a gut punch. That's what makes this film great to me. Plus it was hilarious while being sad.

Margaret’s evolution (IMO) through the series is one of the things I feel helped instill the longevity of the show. She always had good human depth (in the Frank years) but they had to let her develop into a great empathetic human in those later seasons. its hard for me to say I have a favorite overall character, but I put her ahead of Hawkeye for sure. again, my opinion, but in the later seasons, Alda developed Hawkeye to be more of a farce of himself with very few moments of depth. Winchester, like him or hate him came in with so much depth, and they developed it as the series went on. You really have to treat the 1st 3 seasons as 1 show, and the Potter/BJ/Winchester years as a completely different show almost. The seriousness had developed, Alda maybe realized that Hawkeye needed to take more of a back seat to some of the storylines (probably had to do with the loss of Stevenson/Rogers). War is War and Hell is hell, and war is worse. One of Hawkeye’s best quotes… Ladies and Gentlemen take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice. I so loved Sidney, and glad he was a big part of the Finale!! Speaking of the finale, you mention the lady “accidentally” kills her baby. It was not accidental (implied). I sense the movie really bugged you, and yes the Movie is not the Series, but since Radar was the only actor in both vehicles, his character in the Movie was VERY different. He was not the innocent lovable midwestern portrayed in the Series, but a coniving, voyeuristic little shit in some ways. A few of the actors had been in Korea and Vietnam. I realy enjoyed your take on this amazing show, it was a big part of my upbringing, and am old enough to have watched the show on regular TV at its time slot, including the Finale.

I think your characterization of Cyrill is off a bit. He was a dedicated corporate officer, who wanted to uphold the law and bring a murderer of two of his comrades to justice. Our protagonist is an innocent man that those two dick heads are costing but he doesn't know that.

I have recently read Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and I have, many thoughts (and feelings).
