- So this one turned out pretty long. Also I didn't say it in the video but again, this show is up to interpretation so this is just my personal take and I'll probably be wrong about some stuff.

Daniel Handler’s Q&A with the quote about Judaism:
• Daniel Handler Q&A - Zábava
HOLY CRAP I didn't realize that all of those douchebag characters were played by the same actors!!!
Me neither, I can't believe I didn't catch that!
@@WarKeineAbsicht no, in one episode they were her coworkers, and in another they were EMTs. They were always douchebags though!
For anyone just scrolling thru comments its at 9:10
Wonder if they showed up in Season 2! I saw a couple times it could’ve been them.
@@withalittlehelpfrom3 I just finished watching season 2, and they were definitely there, without a single doubt, all 3 of them, exact same guys doing and saying the most ridiculous stuff 😹
"Underneath the surface we are all a little bit broken inside. Yet we live in a society that demands shame, in a way, for that very human experience."
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but you referencing the door handle shaped like a gun at the end definitely made me think of Chekhov's gun and how that relates to all the "irrelevant" elements of the show (props, no name extras, etc) disappearing one by one until the central conflict is resolved.
Kali Ellis if you put a gun in the first act you gotta use it in the third.
She’s carrying a torch, I took it that she passed it to us...
Thats a neat thought
I just realized, if Russian Doll was your standard CBS show, the two mains would've met in episode one, which would be the origin story of how Nadya and Allen are living the same day over again, and the show would be about them searching New York for other people in time loops -- different people each week -- who they would break out with some kind of life coaching, in hopes of fixing some broken time-thing and finding a way out of their own loops.
There would be no drugs or cigarettes, the personalities would be reversed because focus groups found Nadya unsympathetic for sleeping around and drinking (but found those traits made Allen _more_ sympathetic), Nadya would be played by a model and Allen would be white, and Ruth would be a blind, black man with all the wisdom of the universe, who is the only one outside the time loop who believes them because being black and blind makes him magic (but like, _main protaganist_ magic).
Oh...my God?
@@candyisreading8813 Correct
No one has ever nailed it as much as you have with this description. Well done. Down to the casting of the blind, black man who believes them. Brilliant.
Seriously fuck you for being this correct.
Laota Surfs honestly
Its the same outfits every time, for both of them - but in the last loop, both of their last loops, there was specific attention drawn to their change in outfits. Nadia with the pirate shirt from Maxine, and Alan with the good karma scarf. Those two versions are in separate loops, but when they march together in the final scene, Nadia is in the pirate shirt and Alan has the scarf - they are reunited to the same timeline
A theory I've seen for season 2 is that we will learn that Nadia's mother was in her own timeline, broken mirrors, choosing watermelon's because every other fruit was rotten to her, she died at the age of 36 and it was suggested that we would follow or learn this (there's a few other points but I can't remember them well), this leans in to both options and it just sounds ridiculously believable to me.
woah that would be a trip
that would make sense as to why nadia was the same age as she was when her mother “died”
That opens the door for so many explorations of generational trauma, especially if there's uncanny similarities with Nadia's loop.
Do you think Nadia's mom broke out of the loop then? What could have caused them to stop?
Russian Doll Trailer for S2: Helloooo from the fuuuuutuuuureeeeer
me- I wonder why Russian Doll feels so different and so much more authentically gut-wrenching about the way in which its female characters behave and process emotion and trauma
ladyknightthebrave - all of the creators were women
me- oh yeah, that'd do it
Yeah I've only realised now that the show feels fresh and genuine because the characters are not written by males lol
The "are you ready to let her die?" comment from baby Nadia absolutely does haunt me so mission accomplished
I don't know why the algorithm decided to give me this like 10 months after I watched Russian Doll, but regardless I'm so happy it did.Mandatory "you should have a lot more subscribers", but for real, this was quality like you rarely see on here, specially from a small channel.
So much that can be said about Russian Doll, but for now, I'm just so happy it made me find this channel.
Same!
I know this is like a year late but I would definitely recommend BREADSWORD as another film-centric video essayist if you haven't heard of him already. His essays have the same kind of politically and historically-aware, sincere and positive analyses and critiques as Lady Knight's 💚🖤💜
(Edit: his channel is breadsword not broadsword my bad)
haha i’m in the same boat. i even tried to find long format essays after i finished it. really glad i came across this tho
ALSO..... Don’t underestimate our appetite for the feature length analysis video hahaha
As a rabid contrapoints fan, I second this.
“and then sent him this gif of a miniature pony”
And that's Natasha for you :)
I would honestly much rather have the next seasons turn it into an anthology show honestly, because I kind of don't want any other ending for these two. I love the idea of them just showing up in other people's timelines and helping like Horse did, because the writers won't have to explain if it's the same Nadia and Allen, or if it's another timeline, or if it's their ghosts, or if they're leaving impressions in another reality, or if it's all not literal. I'm the kind of person who always gets obsessed with unravling the material reality simulated in a work of fiction I want to understand how it all works and I've spoiled a lot of games and a lot of series for myself in doing so (I need to learn to stay away from wikis). But with Russian Doll it so effectively evokes this nebulous message with its plot and to me that message hinges on its vague uninterpretable nature, and I think answers would ruin that, and I think a continuation of their storylines would probably ruin it unless they did it in a really well-crafted way that continued to shun explanations and create more questions, or if each season was able to stand on its own as a show with only implied continuity but gained greater meaning when strung together. And I like the idea not that the writers are hiding some sort of answer to the whole thing, but that they simply don't have an nswer
I totally agree but i felt that way about OA too untill i saw season 2
I don't know if you've watched season 2, but your theory of each season standing on it's own with only implied connection is spot on! It's crazy really, season 2 can definitely be a story of it's own where it has even a greater meaning when you put it together with season 1, what a great prediction!
@@yaelbenko548 i haven't watched it yet (plan on it soon) but that's so cool to hear!
this show deserves a lot more love and a lot more appreciation.
my parents and i watched the show together, and i didn't find out until the very last episode that my dad had watched the show without us the night before. he told us the only reason he'd been able to keep up the facade of this being a new experience was because the show was so tightly written and jam packed with little details, that in almost every scene it was like seeing it for the first time because there was more and more he hadn't noticed or put together the first time around. to me, that is amazing praise, and that alone makes me recommend the show to friends.
it helps that it's just fantastic all around, too lol. the acting, the cinematography, the sound design, the plot... it's an incredible experience to watch
the first thing that struck me when I first watched through the show was how intense and beautiful the cinematography was
just,,,,,wow!!!! this show did that
it was beautiful!!!!!
Criminally underviewed. Same with the Fleabag video!
That's really sweet, thank you
Just commenting three years later to say the second season was fucking phenomenal. I watched this video when it came out and then kind of forgot about it, but recently I saw Russian Doll on Netflix, remembered this video, and binged both seasons in two days. I love this show more than Nadya loves Oatmeal.
Please please please make a video on the second season.
This is one of the best shows I've seen in YEARS including weird anime.
Hans Hanzo boi, One punch man, violet everygarden, ronja the robbers daughter, mushishi, children of the whales, Tokyo magnitude 8.0, erased, princess tutu, kemono no souja erin, moribito, the promised neverland... shall I go on? I have millions of amazing anime recommendations with great storylines and writing! There are plenty of great ones, you just need to look past the generic ones
Ummm... This is a masterpiece? Thank you for making this, loved every second of it. I'd be really into pt. 2 that explores those additional theories you've mentioned, just sayin'! 😉
Wow thanks so much! I don't know if there's more material for a part 2 lol? It would just be a lot of me pointing at different things like...did you see the mirrors here, here and here? Did you notice she's constantly being fed chicken by her friends and with Ruth and at one point chokes on it? Just a lot of that really. Thank you for watching I'm glad you liked it :)
Ladyknightthebrave omg I would high-key watch a very long video about you bringing substantial meaning to every other scene, song, food item, all of the things. I absolutely adored every moment of this video. You have a new super fan. 💙
@@Ladyknightthebrave What they said!!
Ladyknightthebrave I third this I would watch the shit outta this hypothetical video
@@Ladyknightthebrave totally agree would love to see this video come to fruition
darn it...I didn't need to find another female video essayist that does awesome detailed videos that are almost a hour long. I also love Russian Doll, I feel like people sleep on this.
Omg please give me your recommendations
@@candyisreading8813 Lindsay Ellis (one women, loves the transformers and drinks her weight in red wine while talking about them) and the Take (mostly run by women, and they take a lot of girly movies and dissect them).
@@candyisreading8813 Liz's fantastic recommendations because they are also my favorites. I'd also add in Jenny Nicholson for a much more sarcastic take on pop culture and even though she doesn't do movies, Contrapoints is also another fantastic video essayist for a dissection of life. Ms. Lola also has a great video essay on Lolita that I would recommend. Ms. Lola only has 4 videos so far for a heads up. She might have had a bunch more videos at some time and deleted them. Just right now she only has four. I found her recently with her video essay on Channel Awesome's The Wall parody.
@@candyisreading8813 oh and my dumbass also forgot to recommend Sarah Z. More like Contrapoints in the dissection of life, but also pop culture topics including books and even fanfiction.
@@iloveyourunclebob Darn it I already follow all these people! They are AMAZING don't get me wrong, but, like, I need MORE.
the delivery of "Yeah okay DON" was when I had to pause to hit subscribe. what a gem.
i would love sooooo much to see a video like this about season 2 like, all almost seems like all the themes chosen for this video were the ones they explored in s2
I've watched this a few times now and never noticed the same guys causing trouble in all the different costumes/characters
I set „gotta get up“ as my alarm sound because I wanted it to be the intro of my every day
never had a video essay bring me to tears before,,,
If someone asked me to explain the ending to them, I wouldn't be able to do it, but it evoked such strong emotions in me - positive emotions - that I burst into tears upon seeing Nadya and Allen emerge from the parade. I really don't know, I just love it to death.
this show struck a serious chord in my heart
Arrived for the Russian Doll analysis, subscribed for the pro-feminist snark.
Would have been the same for me, except I was already subscribing.
Wow, I definitely didn't expect this show to have a second season. Looking forward to your next analysis if it does.
I don't think it should have one, but I'll be there to see what they'll do with it. I hope it won't be a disappointment. Russian Doll was perfect.
You should consider placing your work as podcasts, you have great pronaunciation and you cover material you talk about fully. As I see algorithm has not caught up on you yet. Don't give up the good work :)
Thank you friend, I'm okay with a smaller audience. I don't know what I would do if my stuff got really big like Lindsay Ellis. Plus you have to pay to host podcasts but not to put videos on CZcams. Thank you for the advice tho, I'm glad you liked the video.
Catch me rewatching this now! i forgot just how much I love it
When i was watching it, i didn't even get the slightest vibe of it being a "feminist show". It just felt so real and natural all the way through and i couldn't place exactly why!
Really a testiment to how well it was written
The analysis of the music choice is so cool. I only watched this movie once a good while back, but I think I was too mesmerized by the shot composition and surrealism to really notice how haunting the music is. Rewatching some of the scenes, it for sure sets a lot of the unsettled feeling that comes through.
I am floored! This video is fantastic! I frick'n love it! I've watched like a million videos about Russian doll and none of them are half as good as this! FANTASTIC WORK HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE MORE SUBS?!
Thank you friend ^_^
Girl. Who are yooouuuu? I love your mind and I'm glad I found this challenge
I was just thinking about how sick to death I am of long-form video essays by men. Thank you so much for adding your voice.
easy just do not click on them theres plenty of female creators why be sick of different people creating?
I can't see who else you subscribe to, so maybe you already know about these channels, but some of my favorite long-form essayists are Laura Crone, The People's Bayonet, Mad Blender, and Popular C/C (she hasn't uploaded in a while and might be done, but her existing videos are outstanding).
That's a bit harsh. Though if you're looking for more, Lindsey Ellis has some of the best video essays on CZcams.
@@Me1le also the Take is good too.
Algorithm did something good for once. Your video is so polished and detailed, how do you only have a few thousand subs?? Awesome video on an awesome show!
9:05 never picked up on the fact that those were the same 3 actors. Wow lol.
Beautifully done. I'm a bit of a homebody, with minimal female relationships throughout my life and it has always been harder for me to see the differences between male and female influences in media. You really opened up my mind, here, and I'm grateful for it. This show is undeniably amazing and your analysis fits like a glove!
Thank you for making this video,I loved watching Russian doll and this helped me unravel a lot of the stuff that I couldn’t wade through alone,we are all broken but together we can make it through this life..thank you once again...❤️
Thanks so much I'm so glad you enjoyed this and the Fleabag video! (Also I accidentally hit the thumbs down button, if you get a notice about that just ignore it.)
I love this show and I love your analysis, but I can’t help but feel like failing to mention the Nihilistic symbols inherent in the work is like saying Bojack Horseman is really about Catholicism.
tw:suicide, depression
You probably already know this, but for the people in the back the premise is exactly like The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus, enacting the same meaningless task over and over again for eternity. Camus provides two answers to this dilemma: 1) commit suicide and 2) rebel and find happiness by giving it meaning anyway (the latter of which being the option he preferred.)
The whole horse bit is a reference to Turin’s Horse, an incident that many believed marked Neitzche’s (the philosopher who created Nihilism) descent into severe depression/mental illness. He witnesses a horse tied to a carriage collapse from exhaustion and its master whips the hell out of this poor animal until a sobbing Neitzche stops him whilst having a panic attack.
Alan = Suicide Option
Nadia = Rebellious Option
Horse = A really tired, overworked, depressed animal who caused a famous philosopher’s life to spiral out of control
Have I mentioned how much I love this show to bits?
Damn. That essay holds up to the standard of the object analysed. ALSO, if there's a video essay award out there, this one should be awarded FOR SURE.
This was legitimately the best show I've EVER seen.
"im not saying a man couldn't have written this" i am. no man could, because no man would.
I will be forgiving in the sense that some female characters I love have been written by men and some women do also write men badly but like...Yeah. This show would probably not be the same if it was by a man.
As a teenage guy that wants to go into film making when I’m older, I just hope I can create something as amazing as this brilliant show
the only thing that would ruin this show is a second season.... keep it a mini series!!! it was flawless in nearly every way, and that cap at the end ties it all up beautifully.
if they DO do a second season, i really hope it's with different characters and a completely different arch.
You’re about to be real disappointed on Wednesday
you'll be surprised about how great it is. they finally had time to unpack Alan and Nadia's generational trauma!
i watched this show in one night. i literally could not stop watching.
Looking forward to seeing your channel blow up! This is seriously quality content.
"Written and directed entirely by women" - well, this explains why it loses me at times. AND it explains why I liked it so much.
11 likes!?! nobody likes my comments that much! Well it's a first anyway. Alright, who liked this comment 7 minutes ago while I was out making coffee? ( Damn, they always hit like when I'm not looking ). One way or another, I'm gna find out who likes what I say sometimes. ( don't make me go back to stalking... )
The only essential criticism of this show
I also love how they picked up the gold piece of Nadias Necklace in Season 2, making the seasons flow into each other smoothly
I'm so glad I discovered this channel. The time and effort you put into your videos really shows, and this video will stay with me a while.
I would not mind a feature length of this.
This is literally one of the best videos I've ever watched. The level of thought, detail, and production you put into this is astonishing
I acquired this habit of watching video essays about series' I recently finished during the last few years. And so far, I think this one is the best I've seen. Very nice!
You're really fantastic! Your videos keep getting better and more thoughtful. I loved this show when I saw it but I can't believe how much I missed. Thank you so much for sharing all of this research, this is seriously one of the best video essays I've seen on CZcams and I'm really glad I found your channel
It's November, and this is only getting recommended to me now.... Amazing job. Your point about the show being so densely packed with story was made cleared cos I could have sworn there were already 2 seasons out of it.
One of things about trauma is feeling/effect of like being in the time loop. If not dealt with and instead suppressed, same feelings and conditions are subconsciously caused in present over and over, stunting growth, enjoyment and life itself. This series represented this remarkably well. In miniature, it is represented in deadly staircase. She dies several times when she tries to escape her repeated party (symbolism of her trying to escape facing her trauma). She manages to delay death by going down fire escape (changing her pattern). And then she manages to get down the stairs when she accepts her birthday party and help from her friend:-) BTW excellent video essay of this great series, I agree with everything 💜
As an Israeli Jew, thank you for the appreciative and respectful coverage of the Jewish themes in the show.
Hey friend, as an American Jew I'm glad you enjoyed it. Shalom!
I am so glad I found your channel with this video. I love watching in depth video essays on good shows and this one was amazing. I am happy to see you have so many others as well! i can't wait to dive in. Keep up the amazing work.
FLIPPIN EXCELLENT CHANNEL seriously so much work goes into these insightful, badass in depth essays. thank you so much for writing them, they've reignited my love for many films and shows
man this video is amazing, it really said almost everything i felt and it brought up so many good points! you’re very smart & well articulated and i love this video a lot, not a moment wasted in russian doll or your video :D (also ive seen all the interviews you referenced omg) thank you for taking the time 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Suddenly had the desire to work my way through your videos again starting here. I really love your opinions and your work
This is absolutely fantastic!! Thank you so much for making this video and the Fleabag one 👏🏼 I'm looking forward to more videos!!
I loved this show so, so much, and this essay was so good, I got emotional all over again. It's well written, well produced, poignant, and beautiful, and thank you so much for sharing it. Wow. I need to watch this show again!
ok so like, why is there only 190 subscribers here!? YOU DESERVE WAY MORE! Especially when it's so clear that you put much effort into each video! Criminally underrated, now I'm going to go preach the ways of ladyknightthebrave
So, I started watching this show solely because I knew you made a video essay on that, so thanks for introducing me to it. Something I wanted to share is my own take on why (spoilers incoming) Nadia turned around. Mike decided to explain Alan's actions towards the pair all night. He called Alan crazy, a completely obsessed maniac. What is Nadia told over and over again? "Crazy is not a word we use in this house" said Ruth in so many timelines. It's probably something Nadia has been told many times as she grew up. And after this complete stranger saved her life, she couldn't sleep with some whatever douche call him crazy, nor could she leave that stranger who knew so much about her and seemed to care. It's obviously not as much growth as experienced by the Nadia who's died so many times, but it's still a glimmer, much like with the Alan who hasn't experienced all those deaths. Anyway, lovely video! Have a nice day.
This is just such a beautiful essay. I love this show so much, and I hope we get to hear your thoughts on the second season!
This show has been haunting me in the best way. I can't forget it and I never want to. Thank you for taking the time to appreciate it in such a well-produced video essay!
We’re only 5 or so days out from season 2 and I am so ready to see what comes next.
I personally absolutely adored season 2. Is it as good, I’m not sure, but I know that I adore it. I hope you make some sort of video one day about season 2, I love your analysis and how you word your videos. Thank you for introducing me to this show LK. ❤️❤️
@@arden.in.the.garden Months out and several rewatchings later, I too can't decide. What I am sure of is that I think the show can end where it did. Starting staring into a bathroom mirror, ending staring into a bathroom mirror.
Thank you for making and sharing this video- this has so much work and beauty to it. Thank you.
Quickly wanted to say thank you for making this video. Since this was one of the things you’ve talked about I didn’t know about, and it seemed interesting, I decided to hold off on watch your video essay to watch the series. And god damn it’s amazing and I’m forever thankful that I found it! So thank you for this! 💜
This show is one of, if not my number one, favorite shows.
ive never even heard of this show but i took a chance with the youtube algorithm recommending me this and i certainly enjoyed hearing your take on such an interesting series
also, can i have "YEAH OK DON" as a soundbyte? i may need it as quick response to many an argument
Please use that to your hearts content. If thats how I become a meme thats delightful
This video is so well done. Months after finishing the show for the second time and I keep coming back to watch this video over and over. Captivating, and brilliantly executed.
this is such an incredible analysis, I learned so much and my appreciation for the show has grown even more!! thank u for putting this together
Your channel is INCREDIBLE, incidentally. Thank you for your hard and glorious work. You’re criminally undersubbed here!!!
I haven’t been so present and enamoured for a CZcams video in ages. Thank you for creating this brilliant, thoughtful nuanced piece about a piece of work that is equally brilliant, thoughtful and nuanced.
This is absolutely one of the best video essays I've seen! You clearly have a great eye for this and I can see that you've really done your research. Thanks for raising the bar! Really enjoyed watching this, consider me a new fan of yours
I was interested in this show, but the fact it includes mentions of Emily of New Moon in it just put it on the top of my list!
It’s one of my favorite book series growing up (and I still visit it from time to time to this day) and I’m also in the camp that has it as my favorite over the Anne of Green Gables series.
Thanks for making this!
I love this. I watched the show and then came back once again, there's something about rewatching with a new perspective that kind of reminds me of the show. Thank you for making this, and the Atlantis video, and the fleabag video. I love it, I love such creative writers such as you.
I hope we can look forward to a Russain Doll season 2 video essay from you.
All of your essays make me cry oh my god x'D This time it happened during the Trauma portion of this video, so thanks. I have other things I'd like to say but I can't word them right now lol
Just watched season 2 and rewatched season 1 and came across this essay - thank you for such a high quality analysis. I have learned a lot and and got answers for the questions I had
This is absolutely one of the best reviews on the show if not the best! Totally fan of yours now!

Congratulations. This might be the funniest comment I've ever received
These deep dives are amazing! Super love your insights and your delivery! ❤️✨
I haven’t reach the middle of the video and I already subscribed! Thank you!
I don't know what made you decide to make these video essays but please, please, please keep doing them. Both this one and Fleabag made me tear up and feel all the feels. Thank you!
Another brilliant video, I hope you keep making them! Russian Doll, Fleabag and The Adventure Zone are the three things that have helped me through the rough patches of 2019, I'm loving these deep dives into story, theme, context, characters and so much more. I'm going to link this to my mom who I showed Russian Doll to last time I visited home as I'm sure she'll love it as much as I did. I hope you keep making videos 😊
this is such an incredible analysis, i’ve been looking for something involving russian doll that touches on a lot of these pieces and this was so comprehensive and informative!
This channel is amazing. Loving every video I have binged.
Came here after seeing your video on Fleabag. I really liked this vid and especially the Judaism section. Being a gentile there were many many things I didn't notice while watching RD. So thanks for that! 😊 PS: now this is how you do a video essay! A LOT of people doing them on CZcams (cough cough most of them men cough cough) shoudl take a cue from you.
Aw thanks I appreciate that. Although I will say I am by no means reinventing the wheel when it comes to video essays. If you want to see more essays by women I highly recommend Jenny Nicholson or Lindsay Ellis
Cant wait for you to review the 2nd season 💕💕💕
every part of this analysis is just so mindblowingly good, i'm so impressed! and wow there is so much i did not understand or even think about (even after 3 watches of the show!) that you explained so well, thank you
I love your lengthy analysis videos! I love commentary and always wish yours were longer. Keep. It. Up.
I love love how all the scenes you used. It explains the characters perfectly
OMG I-was addicted from the beginning . Loved it!!!!
