What type of home do we want to build? #deserthomestead #offgridbuilding
There are tons of different alternative building styles and after much deliberation, we have finally decided what we want to build & we will take you along on a workshop we attended to gain some more knowledge.
We want to shoutout some very helpful folks and CZcamsrs who helped us with our decision process.

Also, THANK YOU for almost 500 subscribers! We are so thrilled to be hitting this mark 1/2 way through 2024…. Maybe we’ll hit 1k????
Thanks for watching!

    I think you mentioned plans to have an AC unit as a backup for temperature regulation. Have you looked into geothermal as an option? Digging the trenches by shovel would be really labor intensive, but if you could rent a backhoe or something it seems like you could install the pipes yourself, and get the same temperature for less electricity.

    • @Christenhelm
      @Christenhelm Před 4 dny

      We’ve researched that & noticed that the folks over at Our self reliant life (Green dream project) are starting a similar project, but what we have heard while researching is that geothermal doesn’t do well with the hot desert environment unless you dig reaaallly deep, but we’re keeping an eye out to see their progress. Our plan would be to bring in a large enough solar system to run a split unit ac/heat pump.

    When I was 6, my parents thought we were on State property camping. The property owner came out and talked to us. He could have been rude. He wasn't. He showed my dad on his map where his property was and where the State property was. Actually helped all of us move our tents and stuff. That ended up saving our butts. The man came out three days later and asked if we had heard about the fire evacuations. We hadn't. He got our stuff in his truck while his wife and Mom got us children in the car and they took us to their house. We helped them get their animals and go bags and all left. They came and stayed at our house until they were clear to go back to their house. I know people that have been shot for trespassing. I still honestly believe that God lead us all together. We're all still friends. They were building their own house. It was amazing watching how it came together.

      @@Christenhelm 🙏for rain ☔ like all of us, so sad for Mother Earth. There's another Cochise Homesteader, a gentleman on his own, channel is Affordable Desert Living. I believe all of the people who have CZcams channels in Cochise get together to help each other and for fun now and then also. And they all know the best deals for suppliers. Enjoy creating a place to thrive, not just survive 👍. Plant trees for shade this fall ASAP. Top priority. That I only figured out recently. DUH. Morengos are perennial, but in your zone might be annuals and may die every year, but they are are really fast growing from seeds, and will provide you with a lot of mulch. Desert Willows are good, but have to baby them the first few years, protecting from the sun and frosts. I use old T-shirts. I was supposed to have a man in my life to do this with me back when I bought mine in 2001. But that never manifested! Instead I ended up with 6 dogs now. Who are useless at helping me with building anything! 🍻

    The state won't protect your property, so you have to do it yourself. Squatters on rural property is a problem easily solved by a semi-automatic rifle and a backhoe. My backhoe is small and barely gets to 6', so I hope I never have too much of a problem. If the squatters move on as soon as they realize they are busted, that makes the problem even easier. I do hope you have notified the owners of the property they moved to. If you don't know who they are, they can normally be identified through the local property tax database. For better or worse, that is usually public information.

    The government is screwing with off gridders. They don't want you there. The fossil fuel people want to force us to keep using their crap and lying about global warming. I still have acquaintances who think climate change is not man made. It is. Off gridders should be welcomed and not unduly visited with state expenses when the state doesn't know what they are doing and who they are serving anyway. I know we need many new and different technologies to grow and it doesn't do a very good job when governments keep taxing and impacting experimental living arrangements. This makes producing data sets by experimenters very hard to accumulate and pay for. Projects like earth ship construction and all alternative energy systems need individual subsidization. The sheer number of these projects in a few years could definitely begin to blunt the effects of climate change...making it possible for us all to stay alive. Otherwise we will be having more Nazi Germanies, and Gazas and Pakistan floods and nuclear disasters (from sick nuclear power plants). We need an extremely large number of alternative operations world wide, not just in Paducah. These people need to take their taxing authority to the millionaires and leave good people alone. We have to get our government to stop printing money for crazy resource seeking wars. We need to teach ourselves how to survive this very tricky season. Our government and the corporate faction in America have not friends of the people for a long long time. We need to get started and quite giving our government commands from demented superannuated leaders.

    Great breakdown. Money is something that very few homesteaders or off-griders seem to talk about, or when they do it is very vague, and they don't talk about where it is coming from. I know costs are often very relative to the area you are in, but sometimes when you're just starting out you have no idea what the costs will be, so even a general idea is better than none.

    There seems to be a lot of videos around of people just going out to a remote area, assume nobody own it, and set up shop claiming they are homesteaders. They even find old buildings and cabins that are locked and just assume they are "abandoned". I agree with previous posters - fences and signs are the minimum to have., especially if you are a remote owner.
