Creating A Wildlife Pond On Our Allotment To Battle Slugs.
A wildlife pond really can bring a vast amount of extra wildlife into your growing space. from frogs, toads, newts and dragonfly's. Many love a juicy slug. With the wetter weather slugs and snails are decimating crops. Time to take the gloves off, I'm battling slugs with nature.

      Recycling is definitely the way forward 🥰. We used 10ft trampoline hoops. (Free) (Obviously halfs) think it was 3 🤔. Pallets. Some batons from B&Q. To give strength along the hoops. The cover was from first tunnels. Its great quality 👌. Think it was around £150ish. Maybe less. Can't remember off of the top of my head 😅. Metal strap comes in useful, especially to attach any wood to the metal poles. That's about £10. Then the wood for the framework. Ie door, windows if using. We used batons again (B&Q £3.50 each) plus we took apart several pallets for extra wood pieces. Around £200 in total. But you probably could get it done cheaper 👌. Good luck. I'm sure you can make one. It's definitely easier with an extra set of hands 🥰

      Yup, it's a shame when corn fails to germinate 😩. Are you going to sow more? I've never normally had an issue with germination with corn. Currents are going to be made into sauces/preserves. We moved into our house 15 years ago. We have a small garden, maybe 5 x 10m. It was covered in 10 foot high Japanese knotweed along with nettles. It took a lot of patience and persistence to clear it. Every time a head poked up I cut it off as far into the ground I could go. Now we have no nettles and when the odd knotweed pokes it's head up its lopped off. To be honest my biggest problem is the neighbours sycamore tree, every spring my harden is literally covered like a lawn in tiny sycamores.😢 It's a good job we all love gardening 😊

  • @AnyKeyLady
    @AnyKeyLady Před 24 dny

    As long as they have been harden off you should be fine. It is going to rain next week but the met office suggested that temps will still be higher but not as high as later this week. I was lead to believe that chilli's don't have as big of a root system compared to tomatoes so you could get away with them being closer. I previously have been growing chilli's indoors in 25cm pots and they did go ok. Going to plant 3 peppers in a big builders bucket size container in the garden. I was told that it will be tight but ok. My old chilli's are pretty much tired after 3 years of growth but i have 3 more this year that are slowly getting there. I have up potted them all and have been sticking them out for a few hours to harden off the peppers and give the chilli's a boost! I don't have a greenhouse or poly. Finally getting around to planting out the tomatoes in the new trellis and i am going to put some clear plastic sheet over the top, like a lid to try and keep the leaves a bit dryer than in past years. We have 14 in bed, 4 in containers and we are going to put the last one out the front to get the morning sun as kind of a test. The rest of the spares will hopefully get donated. Like you said, they can't stay indoors like a jungle any longer! I also planted out courgettes, beans and sweetcorn but i am based in London. We are going to move our crate with spinach, pak choi and beetroot into the shade as some of them have already started to bolt! I have re sown some more but i am thinking of getting shade cloth for the garden Hope you enjoy the lovely weather this week! Take care!

    Watermelon is grown outdoors in Ukraine 🇺🇦 where the climate is colder and winters longer, so for the first time I am growing one watermelon plant outside in a tub. In my mini potted fruit garden( i have no actual garden), two sides of the fruit garden have brick walls and is SW facing so I’m hoping the fruit garden will create a micro climate and the walls act as a thermal mass. Here’s hoping! If it doesn’t work out I will try the cold hardy ‘’imere’’ (?not sure of spelling) next year.

    My purple pod beans turn green when cooked 😢 I was excited about have purple 😅. I’m doing lots of hanging basket bush beans 🫘 as a try it makes them easy to harvest. But also doing pole French beans, Pongo and some yard long ones. Hope your beans do well thank you for these little videos very cool. Have a great weekend Helen, Ali 🌤️🇨🇦

      Yes this is the reason I don't want to grow purple beans. Shame they lose their colour. I'm growing some yellow ones this year though as a contrast to the usual green.

      Yup, they do loose colour. But I found a quick blanch in boiling water, then into a dry pan to finish off, and keeps a little more colour. Great in a bean salad with a garlic and herb dressing 🥰But yes all those beautiful colours of certain veg don't like the cooking.😪. I really wanted to grow the yard ones this year. I'm going to get some for next season to grow. Thanks Ali ❤️

    Hi, thank you for your videos. Finding them so helpful. It is my first year of having an allotment and greenhouse. I really wanted to grow melons, so I have started growing Hales Best Jumbo Cantaloupe. I have 2 plants which are growing nicely. I'm praying I can keep them alive and enjoy some tasty melon in the summer 😊

      If you do have any issues, don't lose hope on the future growing of melons. They can be temperamental plants. And some years are better for growing then others. But I'm sure you will get a great harvest this year.

    Found it to be real hit and miss. Superb Borlitti crop a couple of years ago, last years one a complete washout. Broad beans last year and french beans both fab, but the year before.... disaster.

      Borlotti beans like a hot dry summer, where I find French beans like warm/hot with plenty of water. In the uk very wet summers 😂.

    Do you know how long the borlotti beans keep for once dried?

      So long as they stay dry I've heard indefinitely.... not sure but I've had some for over 7 years and they were fine to eat.

      Love it. Never give up on melons. You never know we may have a good summer. 👍 they are so weather dependant on whether they give a crop.
