  • The last video on this mini series, and its all about beans! They love the warm weather and now is a great time to sow. Great to grow in small spaces as its mostly grown vertically. Although there are lots of drawf varieties that stay shorter in height, which crops fantastic to.

My purple pod beans turn green when cooked 😢 I was excited about have purple 😅. I’m doing lots of hanging basket bush beans 🫘 as a try it makes them easy to harvest. But also doing pole French beans, Pongo and some yard long ones. Hope your beans do well thank you for these little videos very cool. Have a great weekend Helen, Ali 🌤️🇨🇦

Yes this is the reason I don't want to grow purple beans. Shame they lose their colour. I'm growing some yellow ones this year though as a contrast to the usual green.

Yup, they do loose colour. But I found a quick blanch in boiling water, then into a dry pan to finish off, and keeps a little more colour. Great in a bean salad with a garlic and herb dressing 🥰But yes all those beautiful colours of certain veg don't like the cooking.😪. I really wanted to grow the yard ones this year. I'm going to get some for next season to grow. Thanks Ali ❤️

2 types of Blue Lake bush beans , a Fava bean, Tenderettes and a Kentucky wonder Pole Growing this year.
12+ melon varieties on a new backyard mega trellis ( was a major project with grow bags and a solar run drip irrigation line.)
2 or 3 types of watermelons ( once we set up the mounds loaded with compost ).
2 types of seed potatoes, artichokes, watermelon radish, Dark red beets, 3 rows ( 36 count ) of Bi-licious sweet corn.
    8 to 10 types of tomatoes ( I forgot to label )

I only plan on ever growing climbing beans. Just two varieties. The popular Cobra which I grew last year which I thought were fantastic. And a yellow climbing variety called 'Sunshine'. Just for some nice contrast on the dinner plate. I only got my allotment last year and wouldn't mind growing some runner beans and maybe something like a greek gigantes but will probably wait until next year for those now.

Love the fact you are thinking about the actual food on the plate. Many don't. Just grow to grow.
Runner beans are great. I love them pickled. Ill be doing alot more bean salads this year. A great way to use up those beans 🫘

Me again 😂 Blue Lake (annoyed at myself as usually grow Cobra & picked the wrong packet up), Firestorm Runners (prolific last year) and Climbing Borlotti for the first time. Will be over my arches. Grown Sunshine before very tasty yellow version of Cobra and Blauhilde Purple but disappointed they went green when cooked.

So many choices you have 🥰. Your going to have a great crop of Ben's this year 😍. Love it

Found it to be real hit and miss. Superb Borlitti crop a couple of years ago, last years one a complete washout. Broad beans last year and french beans both fab, but the year before.... disaster.

Borlotti beans like a hot dry summer, where I find French beans like warm/hot with plenty of water. In the uk very wet summers 😂.

Do you know how long the borlotti beans keep for once dried?

    • @oddsocksgrowing

So long as they stay dry I've heard indefinitely.... not sure but I've had some for over 7 years and they were fine to eat.
