Sailing - The Weta Trimaran Sweet Spot
You come off the water and wonder who do you pay? Surely you owe somebody something for this much fun... I've kept track - I have well over 4,000 hours on this boat and very little of it in mundane conditions. People ask what is the "sweet spot" for a Weta? I've sailed it enough to say with confidence that it's between 18 and 23 knots. It'll go in less and it'll go in more, but one lacks excitement and the other is overkill. The Screecher (flat cut spinnaker) makes the boat. You learn to steer to it and the thing just absolutely rips on a broad reach.
This was one of the best days I've had on the Weta. Winds right in the sweet spot and chop only around 2-feet. It just doesn't get much better.

Three hours of non-stop sailing at Jordan in 15 to 22 knots winds. Warren took his A-Cat. There were some lasers and assorted mono-hulls out as well. Very strong winds to the east side towards Ebenezer. Got much colder than expected. In fact, the cold is what finally drove us in about mid-afternoon. They only charged us $5 to get in. Winds were strong - 18 to 25 all day, but out of the SW which made for mostly flat water. Very little powerboat traffic which is always good. Other than one mishap, this was simply a GREAT day of sailing. The Weta's planing skiff hull really comes to life when the wind gets over 20 knots. The Weta will only do about 14 to 15 knots upwind. And that would be under ideal conditions. Downwind it'll do 21 to 22 knots in ideal conditions and IF you know how to sail a spinnaker. I would guess in this video I was likely doing 13 to maybe 14 knots upwind and maybe 18 or 19 downwind, at the most.

      I have sailed the Weta two-up but I don't find it a good two-up vessel. Unless the wind is really honking that second person just kills the performance. My twin tiller system is something I put together back in 2012. Hi @TomKirkman1, in your opinion, what would be the best compromise between fun (wet&wild) and cruise (kids aboard)? Windrider, weta or astus 16.5? And the ultimate fun machine, weta or astus? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

    • @TomKirkman1
      @TomKirkman1 Před 5 měsíci

      The Astus is a very powerful machine. The Weta is a lot of fun but I consider it a one person boat. If you want to take kids and/or another adult in a craft that is easy to rig and sail, and hard to get into trouble with, get a Windrider 17 and go have fun. It sails nicely and they offer a spinnaker for it as well.

    • @TomKirkman1
      @TomKirkman1 Před 11 měsíci

      Get a piece of foam and punch a short section (round) that you can push down in the shaft past the wire (the wires will extend along the inside of the shaft and the foam will compress to allow that. Then, pour some GOOP into the shaft that will seal the top of the foam. the foam will keep the GOOP from traveling any further down and into the motor area. Now drill a small hole in the shaft just above the sealed foam plub and bring the wires out of the hole and connect to your electrical fitting. You can seal the hole as well for added insurance against water intrusion.
