Aardvark Installations
Registrace 3. 04. 2011
A channel documenting my day to day jobs from TV aerial & satellite installation to CCTV installs, wifi distribution and domestic electrical work. I won’t make out I’m the best in the business or that I’m always 100% correct in what I do, but with 23 years experience in the field I know what I’m doing and I know how to run my business. A real life diary of a day to day installer. Questions and comments welcome, although this is NOT a “how to do” channel, it’s a diary of what I encounter for those who are interested. Thanks for reading.

Replacing a fallen aerial and dealing with an ungrateful customer
zhlédnutí 2,5KPřed 4 měsíci
Here I replace a TV aerial on a chimney that has been broken in the strong winds. I also have a bit of a rant about dealing with those customers who ask you to do something then moan about paying you, even when they agreed to the price beforehand!

In this video I attempted to vlog another aerial install and what's involved but I must apologize as this time I rather missed out some of the vital parts of interest. A bit rusty and forgot to record some bits. Never the less it may be of some enjoyment to you. I appreciate your reading this and watching the video anyway.

Lordy those types of plates have not been common in the states since the early 90’s 😬 Shielded balanced splitters took root from the mid 90’s on and plates were only ever used as a single connection point instead of a daisy chain device. Even then some creative techs used the same theory to daisy chain “tapped” splitters. We were animals in the day 😅
Aerial Facing the wrong way, Deflectors Wrong Way, Blocking a window they would now struggle to open - Lazy Scammers. Always best to use lack cable outdoors, its made up of diff properties and therefore does not split. So joing black on to white again lazy. Its like he has connected it to an existing sky cable who do now use white at times, Looks like there is an existing pole and aerial on the side apex. Just run a fresh wire directly, Just complete Lazyness. Not nice to see people getting ripped off, At least youve sorted it now
Great videos. Just found you today and watched all your tv hanging jobs. Your really good at the footage and enjoyed watching them. I'm a heating Engineer so very different to my job. Some help if you don't mind. Moving home in August and wanting to create a cinema like room. 75inch plus tv, maybe up to 98inch. Not decided yet. Took your advice about the brackets you use too. We have a ps5 and a fire stick to work and use on our tvs. Never knew about hdmi points so that was very helpful. Any advice regarding ps5 etc. Maybe hdmi point into a cupboard to hide it? Also need a router. Will look more into hdmi points but great tip. Thanks for sharing and taking time to film. Appreciate it. Liked and subscribed. Thanks
Hiya, how much do you usually charge for something like this? Thanks
Pleased to see you back hopefully aerial work picks up love your new adventures looking forward to more videos on the channel 👏😎
Sorry for your bad luck. Wishing you the best of luck for the future. I love all the aerial stuff so will keep a look out for those videos.
Thank you mate. It’s all sent to try us! 🙂
Looks neat, Where did you get the HDMI Sockets from ?
My suppliers but they are trade only. Think they are available on Amazon I would’ve thought, they are not particularly rare or exclusive
Can I ask your advice what the best areial do you recommend for outside installations in poor signal area.
What wall mount did you use?
I believe it was a wall mount by Ventry or B-Tech I couldn’t tell you which one though as I cant remember and I don’t really use that brand anymore sorry Thanks for watching though More content starting as of this week
2:16 it’s a Televes Infinito UHF 21-69 aerial. Ive seen a lot of them around. Also I noticed they are mounted on heavy steel poles! I believe they were installed in the 00s and until the digital switch over in 2012.
That’s correct mate. If I was to just call it that, people unfamiliar with this stuff wouldn’t have a clue what I was talking about so an ultra high gain wide band aerial was easier, as that’s what it is 👍
Could do with more people like you to be honest. Some people are a proper cowboy.
Thank you mate, appreciate that. Thank you for watching & subscribing. New content coming soon
Weirdly I really enjoyed this video😊. Thanks for the guide, I'll be using this to put up a weather station on my chimney with that ratcheting bracket. Thank god I dont have to drill into the chimney
Glad you enjoyed it mate. And thanks for commenting. It all helps the channel grow 👍
Looks good but how did you do it?
Yeah fair point, i didnt show much of exactly what I'm doing there. It was one of my early videos where I'm still getting used to what to show when filming. You have my word, I will do another video soon with a lot more "how to" in it. Thanks for watching though.
Very helpful. Would be interested to see how Ethernet over coaxial cable could be installed. Rather than use the multi core cable.
I was quoted for an aerial install in the loft. It was fair but too expensive so I did it myself after watching your videos and others. Took me several days and a lot of work as I have multiple room sockets, cables to fish down walls, mast head amp, triplexer for DAB, FM and UHT aerials. Also lots of time spent researching the best aerials for my region. Buts done with great signals and 100% quality (whatever that really means). Cost was half of what I was quoted. Yes there was a time cost but it was interesting work.
I’m glad it helped you. You can probably appreciate what goes into knowing how to do this now? What is your region out of interest? And have you subscribed to my channel to see future content coming up?
@@aardvarkinstallsI’m in the North West where main transmitter is Winter Hill 23 miles away. I’m all subscribed to this channel - all the best.

Hi mate, What type of meter are you using ? Is it Televese H30 ? Would you recommend it? How much would it cost to purchase one of the H30 meters? Thanks in advance
How long will zip ties last for your bird spikes? Will you need to replace them after 12 months?
No they’ll last years mate
Curious how much u charge for a job like this mate? Great video.
Oh I can’t remember now That was a while ago. I wouldn’t divulge costs on here anyway I’m afraid as each job is different. Thank you for watching though 👍
@@aardvarkinstalls Ahh, yh makes sense, nws mate. Another quick one please- I see in alot of your videos you cut out and spur to a nearby socket- is this only because the nearest socket is too far away? Can you just run the power cord from the telly down the back of the wall and into the nearest power socket if it's not too far? Cheers
@@shudidesai all electric cabling must be kept within prescribed zones mate so concealing the power cord within the wall might not allow this.
@@aardvarkinstalls Legend mate, thanku.
Nice fixing with the pole piercing the felt, 😮
It was amazing. It hadn’t quite pierced it, but where the pole had been loose for so long at had worn away a nice imprint 😬
With 40 years in the trade , most people do really appreciate what you're doing. I like the customer who says "no-one has touched anything behind the tv, you look over the top of the tv and there isn't a spec of dust....anywhere. Someone has been dusting , catching cables etc.... Or the customer who moans at you for doing your work too quickly "you've only been here 20 minutes and you're done!" My reply....."would you like someone who knows what they're doing and takes 20 mins or an idiot who turns up scratching his head and is still there in 3 hours time?" My dad had a saying......"There's only one thing worse than a customer.......2 of the bastards!" There is so much that Joe Public doesn't appreciate about this industry..... 1. Dealing with customers 2. Dealing with the technical problem 3.Dealing with the height / danger issue
Absolutely mate. Like someone said in another comment, my price is for my expertise in knowing how to rectify the problem properly and the danger factor involved. I did three installs yesterday, very similar to this one in the video and for varying prices, and every one of them were over the moon that I 1: did the job so quickly 2: got to them as fast as I did 3: returned their calls when leaving answerphone messages 4: making things clear to them from the start.
The scumbag that did that should be in JAIL.
Your not paying for my time your paying for my experience and fixing the problem Richard head i think i would have said.
I’ll remember that one 😂
I don't think beforehand such customers understand the cost of running a Van, holding all the stock parts ready to install. The fact that every year you need do accounts or pay someone to do them. It's very typical naivety of a proportion of the public. Not to mention the exorbitant cost of everything and the fact that your also subjected as a buyer in your business to all those rising costs not the creator of them. Clearly you do an excellent job and know the subject well enough but we can't have every skillset and maybe you come accross the wrong way. I mean your straight and good at the job which really as long as you know you done a great job is good for you but we know in the world as it is today the customer seems to thrive on BS rather than honesty. I personally prefer the truth alas the public often seem to opt for BS those such customers won't use such as you alas. You may say their loss which I'd agree with. Doing a good fair job is much more important.
Excellent. I couldn’t agree more. You’re right, maybe some people don’t like how I’m so black or white about it. The thing with that customer is he had booked me and cancelled me once before, then literally pleaded with me to get there asap, then agreed the price, then rushed me because he wanted to go out for lunch and then whinged on 6 separate occasions about having to pay what we agreed. My sense of humour or acceptance for that diminishes somewhat when it comes to making me feel awkward stood in their kitchen requesting payment for me to pay my bills. No time for people like that I’m afraid. Anyway, onwards and upwards. Thank you for a very thoughtful and educated comment anyway mate, it made me feel a lot better after I read a couple of comments on here either taking the p*ss out of how I talk or saying I treat my customers badly! This has been a welcome and constructive input. 👍
I went to a call for a repair one time for a TV aerial that was hanging off the wall, after fixing it with the propper fixings I asked for payment which was agreed beforehand. The woman asked me why do I have to pay, don't you guarantee your work, I said yes I do for 5 years. She said wait a minuite my husband is coming, lo and behold a Police van arrives and her policeman husband arrives and tells her that I didn't install it in the first place. Some people are unbeleiveable!
Incredible mate
Please tell me you took the labels off the camera especially the yellow ones
Indeed I did yes Just after recording
Good answer, the amount of cameras i see with the labels still on is amazing to think people still leave packaging labels on my eyes@@aardvarkinstalls
Do you just work in domestic properties ? Im not sure what areas you cover but sometimes i get works on IRS systems that need a analyser rather than just my old horizon meters to get it sorted especially when sky refuse a install due to a transponder failing
I do some IRS yes but very rarely. I’m guessing your Leeds and so no not your areas. Are you trained in signal reception as well as being an electrician? I’m only curious as there aren’t many who are and customers often make the mistake of thinking they need an electrician when there tv picture starts to fail.
Not technically qualified but used to work with a company who installs IRS systems so have experiance on them just dont get enough work to invest in a analyser, Most i tend to do now is maintenance on them, i find customers who are wanting a aerial or dish installing but dont think electricians do it so thats very interesting all though i did get a call from a building managment compnany who said are you a qualified electrican we have a issue with a communal tv system, It was a 9 wire but luckily only a faulty LNB @@aardvarkinstalls
People want to pay you less for being good at your job as a tradesman, if you fix something or diagnose a fault quickly they want to pay you less, where as joe bloggs who would spend all day messing around theyll feels justified in paying them more for being there all day, people pay for a tradesmans skill as well as time
I was taught as a kid that if you had anyone come round to do work you welcome them and throughout you look after them. Offer drinks, biscuits etc. If they are there over lunch you ask if they would like some. End result is if I have a bit of an urgent job and I get in touch with them they are normally more than happy to come round and help me out at a fair price. Yes, I'll try to haggle the price down but only up to the point of accepting it. After that in my book the price can only go up (if for example an unseen problem is found and they have to do extra work). Folks also need to take into account the amount of time, effort and money that a lot of tradesmen have to put in to maintaining their qualifications.
Same as me mate. I wouldn’t want someone to be working in my house thinking they can’t wait to get away! A couple of times Ive been spoken to like I’m a huge pain in their arse, like I’m a peasant or something, and it only back fires on them as I’ll have no intention of doing any more than necessary. I’ve got customers that often have issues with certain things due their own lack of skills but they are so nice to me and pay accordingly, that I’ve been out for free at weekends or on way home before just because they are valued customers.
Lets be honest Quotes dont stop the Boats and Customer's are like Marmite
There is always one. I was booked to do a sky dish re-alignment. unknown to me the customer had phones around a few companies. One of them(the worste one in my area known for ripping people off) showed up 1 hour before me and did the job. That evening i got a phone call from the customer's son screaming and swearing at me because the thing had gone again. I tried to explain that i didnt do the job even though i was booked. I didnt even get over the doorstep nor did i get paid for the call out either...they were having none of it. I actually had to tell him to F off and go speak to the cowboys that did actually do the job.warn him with police if he continued to threaten me and bad mouth me and my business. Some people are just so nasty
My god, that sounds pretty awful man. Honestly 99% of my customers are polite and appreciate my time. It’s not like I’ve knocked on their door to sell them something, I’ve gone out free of charge to look, and agreed a price to fix. That’s it. Anyway thanks for sharing mate. Hope you enjoy my videos as I’ll post more like this if it’s of interest to people?
Get it all the time mate !! Give them a price and because of the amount of time it takes me to do the job they try and haggle oh try to make it uncomfortable for me trying to make me feel guilty !!!! That’s the price (before I turn up on site no matter how long it takes ) I have re locked the door on a couple of occasions and walked away leaving them where they started and me out of pocket 👋 I’m an autolocksmith it’s honestly rife that kinda of “customer” behaviour in my trade
Just did my head right in, but I’ve had it before. Glad you enjoyed the video though. I’ll put more up like this documenting my experiences in an average day if it’s of interest?
There's always the odd customer that pisses you off by haggling AFTER they accepted the original quote.
I had no idea those ratchet lashing kits existed, awesome. Do you know if they'd cope with the loading of something like an X50 dual band VHF/UHF amateur radio antenna?
They are great bits of kit used properly, i have come across a few that have been fitted badly and are loose. I'm afraid i have no idea of the weight involved so i wouldn't want to recommend something falsely sorry, but i reckon so!
About 1KG plus mast. I reckon it's worth a go, thanks :) @@aardvarkinstalls
Hi really good video and well presented on how to manage peoples expectations. Always, cost first and agreed as you have done. with you 100%
Glad you enjoyed the video though. I’ll put more up like this documenting my experiences in an average day if it’s of interest?
If you don't ask you don't get, but moaning about a price you've accepted is wrong.
Great video 📹 I get it, the rant etc Says more about him, than you Sometimes its not worth the headache etc The cost of time, the frustration, the negative energy of customers like you described There's plenty of appreciative clients Look after the ones that look after you If he thinks its expensive to hire a professional Tell him wait till he hires a cowboy, Pay cheap, pay twice etc Not to mention, stock, fuel, etc all been price increased Affect on us all Hes also paying for your experience, use of meter, knowledge, built-up over years What an unappreciative, selfish p#×@!k I'd of left a quote, let him digest over his lunch And then make him wait, reschedule him Not worth the headache
Excellent video as always, my late uncle used to put TV aerials up in the 50s and 60s and some of them were heavy and huge compared with today's types.
Job is always great apart from the customers. Definitely no need to reduce the agreed price, not the sort of customer you want to deal with too often!
Glad you enjoyed the video though. I’ll put more up like this documenting my experiences in an average day if it’s of interest?
I don’t think people generally understand the skill needed to troubleshoot and do a proper job to ensure an aerial is working efficiently and delivering the best quality signal using quality kit. Roof work alone is a real skill let alone juggling with hardware at the same time as staying safe. You do right to be irritated when someone disrespects your skill and time which has a cost and why should you compromise when met with negativity. Keep up the good work. n
Really appreciate that mate thank you. So infuriating
Always get one mate 🙄😎
Good job, but it would be far more useful to show you doing the installation
Fair point mate. That one wasn’t my best. Still learning the old video skills
Interesting comment on no insulation between the joists - is the insulation in the roof structure itself behind those chipboard panels? It can be done either way here in the USA, but you need an insulation layer, and if its foil-back the reception is almost non-existent. Looks like its not a problem in your case as you went ahead with the installation of the aerial (we call them antennas!).. Interesting to see the differences and similarities between the UK and USA (I'm in Los Angeles, California). Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Yes you are right mate. I since learned that the insulation was the other side of the OSB wooden boards. I had not seen that before until now. It’s the sane here, if the foil backed insulation is used it just kills the signal completely so it was lucky it was the fibreglass / rock wool stuff. Great to have viewers from the states though mate, it’s nice knowing it’s of interest to people globally. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions or suggestions for the channel as I’m always open to ideas. You can find my email by going to my website aardvarkinstallations.co.uk
Greetings from Los Angeles! I've got it much easier, all the major broadcast television channels come from one mountain top so easy to align an antenna and get a good signal as long as no big buildings or heavily tree'd area in the way. I noticed the antenna right away, interesting that you only have UHF signals as the broadcasters here in the USA use both UHF and VHF bands, and the channels have been changing bands ('repacking') due to expanding use of hi-UHF for cell phone and 5G wireless transmission. Any areas where the broadcast signal comes from different directions so a dual antenna system is needed? Anyway, interesting to see this from another country. Cheers!
As far as I can tell, DVB-T (used in the UK) uses only UHF bands, while ATSC (used in the US) uses both VHF and UHF bands.
Fair play mate 👏 👍
What a fabulous gesture. Good man.
Fair play to you. Though, I’d be curious as to why you did it for free?
