Handmade Wedding Dress: Padding the Dress Form
I had few major rules as a kid, but a big one was “NEVER touch mom’s fancy scissors!!” bc she had really nice tailors shears and was terrified we’d try to cut construction paper with it lol. The thumb shelf is wildly underrated, enjoy!!
Whats the name of the brand of thread?

Oh, I need you to do me a fabulous piece for my star trek cruise
Wonderful ❤
I want to make a bridal head piece what would recommend I apply it on?
I'm not sure whether you mean what to do the embroidery on or what to attach the embroidery to once it's finished- Organza is the best base for Tambour since it's strong and sheer but if your headpiece has some complex edges, tulle might be better. If you're talking about what to apply the applique to, that depends on how much structure you want. My flapper headpieces are both done on a thin leather, but felt or even just satin fabric with the edges turned under could be good options depending on your design.
Yes! Sew smarter not harder! I'm so here for it
Absolutely beautiful ❤
❤😍 This is too beautiful. I'm black but this is why I love wearing clothes from India! Wearing beautiful things got me through some dark days (divorce).
Hi Kat! I'm so grateful for your videos, they are so detailed and helpful! Your work has definitely inspired me to lean this technique! Apologies if it was mentioned and I missed it but how do you decide how much thread to use and how many beads to load at a time when doing the luneville method?
Thank you for this very helpful video! Greatly appreciated it! On the side note, is it just me or I don't see any part of the tutorial on how to set up the fabric on the slate frame? I would love to see that part and nee to know what's that white tape fabric used to hold the fabric. Thank you!
Dressing the slate frame has its own separate video! You can find it here: czcams.com/video/KO6fReydnTI/video.html
can i use organza to make appliques? or only tulle?
You can totally use organza! The main issue is that it unravels, whereas tulle doesn’t, but you can do things like folding under the edges or finishing them with some fray check or glue ☺️
That is absolutely mesmerizing, I love it 🤩 You might've just gotten me into beading 😅
Bribing Theo with his own bag to hide in so he'd stay out of your way but feel included is a Pro Cat Parent move 😂 I'm new but really loving your content!
This is so pretty!!! Can you please make Pattern drafting and Longer video for this please 😩😩. Thank you
What's the first tool called?
❤thanks
Hi Kat. I have a couple of questions: 1. do you earn your living from making? Or do you have a separate part or full-time job? 2. You mentioned you made your slat frame. Do you have wordworking skills and all the saws/tools you needed to make it? Thank you.
I have a full time job! I do make a small amount of income from things like the CZcams partner program and Kofi donations which are AMAZING but my regular job pays my mortgage and most of my project costs 😅 On the slate frame- my dad’s an avid woodworker and some of the skills have worn off on me! My skills are not amazing but I’ve got enough (plus some tools) to get the job done 😅
beautiful!!!!
TOTALLY JEALOUS !!!
I know they're quite different, but this just made me think of punchneedling
Very interesting. Your weddings dress is beautiful. Too old to start a new hobby, 79 but I’m curious about other crafts and admire the techniques. 😊
Absolutely love this, ❤️ 😍 💖 😊
Oh my goodness! I am a lifelong embroiderer (😂) and a recent beading fanatic! Cannot wait. As a retired teacher, I may not be able to go for silk organza, but I will investigate my options.
Wow that’s super cool 😮
That's why I hate YT sometimes, it's an endless source of new crafts I want to try😂
So can I do this on denim?
I definitely need the history!
I would love to learn how to do this..can you sent me a link to start with from your videos ?
Here you go! Here's the page for my "Learn Tambour Embroidery" playlist :) czcams.com/play/PLjH2hJYBT3xk6hnstunjFxZVSb2snQuOd.html
I will never use any of this knowledge. that being said, this is super interesting.
Amazing dress--would love to see you wear it!
Do you happen to know of a comparable tulle to the one you used with your wedding dress that would ship to the USA? I love that the holes are so small!
Frustratingly no - I had to order LOADS of samples to find that one - it was called "Invisible tulle" and it was in the bridal section of the shop's website, which might help, but there's a really irritating lack of consistency across descriptions as far as tulle is concerned so you might have to do the same and order samples.
I'm wanting to make a dress replica of Sabrina Carpenter's iconic heart cut out dress. I want to use tambour embroidery for the heart beads, but I'm unsure of how to attach it to a silk, as tambouring directly onto silk seems like it'll snag really easily. Would maybe making an applique and hand sewing it on work best? Then hand sewing on some of the more scarce beads after?
I had to look this dress up, I'm clearly behind on the times 😅 - I don't see much tambour in her versions - they seem to be either sewn with a needle or (honestly in most cases) glued on crystals. There's no reason you couldn't use tambour instead though. In general yes- making an applique (on something like organza) would be easier than trying to do Tambour on the fashion fabric - and then yes, hand sewing some of the more scarce beads will work! You could also use some of those more scarce beads to hide the edge of your applique :)
Oh this is so much more efficient than the way I learned to embroider with beads, than you for a clear explanation
Nice! ❤😊
Yes I wish to ask a question please from where did you buy your hook
Mine came from a shop called Brodely in France, but I've made a shop list and supply list on my website that may be helpful if you don't live in France :) www.katmakes.com/tambour-embroidery
love
what is name this net?
How would it have been if you added the horsehair to the lining as compared to the shell.
Basically every layer of skirt you have on top of the layer with the horsehair will weigh it down a little bit - with something like this where my skirt is organza there's not a lot of weight so it's not a huge issue, but if I'd done a cotton sateen or something similar, there'd be less pouf. Still a bit - especially when it moves- but if, for example, I wanted to do that I'd use either a wider or stiffer horsehair to combat that. If you look at the Dior New Look era dresses, they often have a petticoat which has horsehair along the hem just like that! The one I was looking at most recently had about a 3" wide horsehair, whereas this dress used 3/4" I think.😅
@@katmakes I thought that would be the case but I had to ask…I’m in the learning phase….thanks so much for answering.
fantastic teacher, great info, loved it, watching all your stuff, so excited I discovered your videos. I have always loved beaded clothes and watching documentaries and museum shows on embroidery of historical textiles. Thank you for your love of tambour and creating these videos. Your wedding dress was beautiful!
That’s crocheting.
😳Amazing! Thanks for sharing🧠
Thank you SO MUCH
CAN YOU DO THIS ON DENIM? Can’t find any info about this online Thanks so much for the info!
You can do it on anything that you can pierce with the hook - so technically yes - BUT you won't be able to see your lower hand, the twill weave of denim is more complex (prone to snags) than regular plain weave fabric, and you have to be able to stretch your item in a hoop or frame to stitch. You might consider making an applique and stitching it on instead :)
The magnets for the pattern is the single most brilliant thing I’ve ever seen - you just changed my life
I can't tell you how much I love this❤❤❤
You are an amazing teacher and I love these videos! Can you tell me the names of these threads you are discussing? Thank you for all you are sharing with us!
Yes! Apologies, I realise now I should have put the names up on the screen in text for easy googling! - Gutermann all purpose sewing thread (or any other high quality sewing thread) is ok for learning if you have it around - Gutermann Hand Quilting thread - glazed cotton, excellent for tambour - Sajou Fil a Gant (French "Gloving" thread) - also glazed cotton, thinner than the Gutermann Hand quilting- this stuff is basically the best of the best for attaching beads with Tambour. - Sajou Fil a Coudre (metallic)- a great sparkly thread that you can use to attach beads + also provide a bit of shine.
@@katmakes Perfect! I'm really having fun learning Tambour and it's all thanks to you.
