Fantastic and fast long run! Consistent hard / easy efforts are paying off. You are still improving, so lots of time to race a 10K lol.
Thanks Reto 😃 yeah really happy with the progress so far.
I’m worried that the straps will get smelly I also have no clue how people can stand to run with their phone crunched in their fingers so I don’t know how I would even think about holding a selfie stick for long distance so that’s out of the picture. This is got to work with this type of set up you can attach , a system and clip on a microphone to give better audio if you want, but I still would worry about sweat so I guess you’d have to do voice after in that regard
Thank you Walter 😀 actually you can take the straps off or even leave on the plastic and wash them. I don't wear it all the time obviously but if you wash every few runs and if it gets wet dry it quicky it's fine. I'd recommend it if your thinking of one and don't like carrying the selfie stick !
I’m worried that the straps will get smelly
you'll be fine - just wash them like your clothes, at £10 or so its not too expensive. Will you wear it every run or just for certain events like me ?
Motivated by your 800s I did them bit faster than usually last week (only I do 6x800m) and I managed to run at 3:45/km. I ran on a track in nearby city Piaseczno - on such standard track it's easy to keep stable pace. There are clear markings every 100m, so I simply try to keep the same pace each 100m, lately 23s per 100m what is 3:50/km. Last time I pushed bit faster: 22.5s/100m = 3:45/km. I know by heart already split times :) 23s, 46s, 1:09, 1:32, 1:55, 2:18 and so on :)
That's Brilliant Leszek, great to hear 😁 and you know what your doing. I need to get it down to the 100m then in the future. Seems alot but there was a time when I struggled to remember to press the lap button at the right time on the track 😂
Well done Matt. For my track workouts, I try to mix the paces up and do different sessions week by week to keep it interesting. I like 3 x (1200 600, 300) with 400, 200, 100 jog recoveries respectively, and 2-3 mins between sets. The 1200s are at goal 5k pace and the other distances are faster. I find that fast track workouts make my tempo pace feel easier and a faster tempo pace makes marathon pace easier...
Thanks Paul, that's a great insight 😃 and later I might give that format a go. Your right a bit of stress at the track helps a longer tempo run !
Well done Matt 👏
Thanks Paul 😁 getting close now, need to find 4 seconds. Need to get yourself back at the track show me how it's done !
Getting quicker. When I used to do long intervals on the track I'd be checking at every 100m line for even pacing 😂
That's good to hear, every 100m might be a bit taxing on my brain 😂
Nice one Matt. I’d desperate to hear what marathon you’re talking about. Hopefully you’ll let us know soon.
Thanks Kenny, I'm not thinking about it too much but I'll let you know later. I'm really trying to focus my brain on the now, at the track, at the long run. And with the 2 halfs coming soon got 1 eye on a sub90.
Super consistent splits, Matt. Consistency is key to continuous improvement, and your approach confirm that principle. I like to rotate my LT workouts every month and start with 600 / 300 and work up to 2-mile repeats, and then repeat. The 600's have been helpful to pace the 800's. Great job!
Thanks for that insight Reto and I'm keeping up with your training/videos too as you know. I like that 600 300 2mile split your doing. 2mile repeats at the track is pretty tough !
Sometimes do 5 x 1k or 5 x 4mins. Just depends really. What rest did you take between reps (e,g 2 mins), and what type (e.g. standing, jogging etc)?
Thank you for sharing that 😊 Its about 2 minutes I think, but more I go for 200m off period than time. typically I jog on for the first 100m after the rep, then turn around and walk the next 100m before going again on the next rep. If I do a 400m break, so a full lap, I'll jog the whole way otherwise it takes too long to get round, like pre rep 11 on this one. Prefer the 200m off time, as the workout completes quicker, but also it depends how busy the track is as to whether I can alternate rotation and start-stop in different places.
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing and it's a good reminder for me that I need to do more strength and mobility work. That includes "dusting off" my resistance band.
Haha 😂 yes dust them off and get strong 💪 but it's not like we have all the time in the world, we just do what we can and a little bit of strength goes a log way I think
Solid one Matt 🫡 What editing software do you use for your vids bro? Always looking sharp mate 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks Gummer 😃 Just the basic windows free one at the moment. Movie Maker, it's very easy to use but limited. They have a bolt on package for about £10 too for doing some more clever stuff but still a bit clunky. I've looked at other software and would like to but the time to learn it is the problem, and my old pc needs an upgrade first too 😆
Good stuff Matt. I’ve let the strength training slip post London but will use this to get back into it. I’ll take my resistance bands on holiday.
I do too, always take the bands away, so light but very useful as long you've got a chair in your hotel room 😂 Just a video to share, I'm sure there are loads more beneficial exercises you and others do but we do what we can with the time we have 😃
That made me feel tired just watching the workout! Would take me ages to recover for that. Do you use any recovery shakes?
Thanks Will 😂 but it's not quite as quick as your pace yet. Should be able to progress it in the coming months, that's the plan at least 😃 I'm using the unived recovery mix vanilla at the moment after the big workouts (sometimes the tailwind vanilla as I'm trying to use the last few of those up too).
@@RunThePlanet I’m still trying to find a recovery shake I’m happy with. Used the SIS one before but I don’t really enjoy drinking it so rarely used.
@@TheWu yeah I know what you mean. I find SIS hard to get the lumps out sometimes. Unived vanilla is quite thin and mixes easy (let the bubbles settle though otherwise it tickles the throat) but difficult to buy in the UK, I got from India direct and bought too much so got stung with import tax). Tailwind mixes well, but the initial taste isn't great for me but after taste ok, just takes time getting used to. Let me know what else you use or find please ? So many on the market
Well done on the 800 subs. What is the Great North 10k route like?
Thanks TRB 😃 the 10k route, I'm not sure totally, but just going off the COVID GNR route from 2021 was it the starts fine but the come back through the town has some inclines and the 9th km should also climb, but a seasoned runner like you should be able to power through. It's all tarmac I except apart from sat the last half or 1km through the town moor.
Nice one Matt. I’m coming towards the end of a 10k series of races. Might do another in August/September after a proper training block. Still can’t decide on a winter marathon. Eindhoven in October works best for me in terms of dates but I don’t know anything about it.
Thanks Kenny. Yeah I never stumbled across the Eindhoven one, needs looking into 😯 haven't heard of it so maybe it's a reasonable sized field, not too busy, will be interesting to see where you go !
Good session Matt 👍 Was that in Vapors?
Yeah a really good session thanks Paul. Yes the Vaporfly 3 and my Valencia Marathon finishers T-shirt 😃
Hi Matt, superb 800 session and impressive consistency and improvement. Yeah, agree that it's better to run these sessions being relaxed and not thinking about time goals for upcoming races. These are hard especially running them solo. I think you're in 1:30 half marathon shape.
Thanks Reto, I think I'd need to taper but it's okay be ause the goal half marathon (so far) isn't until October though I might pick a smaller race up sometime soon, but let's see, pressures off and that's nice 🙂
What rest do you have between reps?
Thanks Ben, 200m off, which is around 90s or so for me, maybe a bit longer but I keep moving as I like to do the whole session as a continuous workout.
Nice one Matt. Keep at it. You've got some good ideas to help you make progress.
Thanks Kenny, just keep trying and hopefully we'll get there 😃 Hard work brings reward (should do anyway)
Well done Matt. 3 x 10k is mega, so you're clearly very strong mentally as well as physically. Have you thought of trying something like 3 x 3k (or more) at 4:15/km pace for your next big long run workout? I broke 3 hours at Manchester last year by running lots of 4:15 pace blocks in my long runs over the winter and I feel you are way fitter than I was when I started that training block. Just a thought :)
Thanks Paul 😃 your right 4.15 is where I need to get to in training. Well done in breaking 3 🫨 fantastic and good to hear when others do it. I have actually thought about 3x3k and plan to do it, it's a good idea, but that workout I will do more for the GN10k I have coming up in July.
Great work Matt. Looks really nice running around there
Thanks Paul 😀 yeah it is at the moment. Of late it's low wind and I've been lucky with very little rain on the runs and everything's green 🌲best time on the quayside, making the most of it while it lasts !
Good workout. Might see you on 7th July? We're running the Great North 10k
Yes fantastic see you there 😁 saw you mention it in one of your recent videos
That's an excellent session Matt. How are your cramp issues doing lately?
Thanks Dean. Cramp isn't really a problem for me until the back half of a marathon. I don't really see it in training unless I neglect the nutrition and hydration since I never really push myself that far. This videos workout isn't continuous as I stop a couple times to pick up water and gels. But in race trim it's getting better and much better than it was say 2 years ago 😃
@@RunThePlanetthat's really good to hear my friend. Love what you're doing and appreciate the effort that goes into the vlogs.
I hope it's OK if I share my thoughts? It's not about preaching, it's just my opinion (I'm not a coach, just an amateur runner :) ), so take my comments as just side comments :) I wonder are you designing your plan by yourself or you have a coach or use some prepared plans in training books? I usually either use ready plans from books like Jack Daniels, Hansons and other coaches. I have completely different approach so I want to ask - why do you do so long workouts? 40km seems too long for me: instead of improvin your fitness it's stopping progress because regeneration after such long run requires few days (and you plan 10km next day)... I run up to 32km. I would do such long run otherwise: using progressive pace, so I would do single run (I never do warm up and then main run after one hour?) and I would start at easy pace (probably around 5:15/km) and then gradually increase pace to 4:30/km for last part of the run. The closer to marthon the bigger would be that part at goal marathon pace, even up to 15km, maybe in best case 20km but that might be too big stress for body. Of course you might run 3x10km at goal marathon pace if you push really hard - but you will recover from that for long time and instead of progress you might have stagnation or even lose a little bit of fitness level...
Thanks Leszek 😁 Its a public platform and I think I already said your welcome to comment either way you like, so your opinions are welcomed. Sometimes they will benefit me and others. But I like training this way, it's been a process to get here so far. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't, but since we are all a little bit different what works for me won't work for others. But anyway kudos to you, your marathon PR is better than mine 😃 And Keep commenting please 😀
Superb workout, Matt, and very even splits. Impressive handling of GoPro and gel while running 😅.
Thanks Reto, haha that first gel was a rascal, the retainer strip snapped and hole left was tiny, need to really for the gel out 😄
40k is a mega workout? If not a little bit overkill?
Thanks ElloEllo35 😃 it is but it can be done by mere mortals like me if we build up to it and ofcourse only if we want to. I appreciate too that most training plans and coaches probably won't prescribe it. It works for me. Realistically it's only 30k at effort and the rest is very easy/recovery pace.
Interesting
thanks Steve 😄 good to hear from you, hope your runnings going well !
I'm training at the same pace to crack 3.10 at the third attempt.
Looks like a decent event that one! Good running mate, i just started posting some videos for my journey to a sub3 as well. Running Edinburgh full this weekend but still not sure if its going to be the full send just yet 😂 subbed 👊
Thanks Timothy 😃 Good to hear you ran Edinburgh this year, its downhill at the start as you now know but still a tough race. Hope you got on well and achieved your goal !!
I think you might be close to overtraining. Looking at how high mileage you had and paces you shared here - it's too aggressive I'm afraid. Your 800s were not too slow, if you look at e.g. Daniels pace tables you should run like that. I would decrease volume and paces... it might actually give better results. Just take rest for 1-2 days, go for a Park Run and test your current 5k time. Then use it to compute your training pace for each distance, I have impression that it will be slower..
Appreciate your thoughts Leszek as always 😃 definitely I was overtrained with the 4 bigs sessions in 9 days (might have been 8) and the lack of energy doesn't help but I'll get there. Park run... Scary thought 🤔😂
@@RunThePlanet I love Park Runs :) they're very popular in Poland. If you choose a flat one with hard surface it's a great place to test your current 5k time - it's hard to run alone on track such good time as with other runners :) and sorry if I sound like a trainer, I'm not one - just IT guy who runs occasionally :)
Matt, you did great because you're consistently out there pushing yourself. The effort is key. I switched to a Keto-friendly diet a few years ago, that's helped maintain weight and running on lower fuel. But not easy to do a workout when fasting.
Thanks Reto, your right. Trying to carb up for workouts and long runs and then lose some weight the next few days is rather difficult. But this interim block shall I call it, I plan to work hard but the diet takes priority so if I find I have to fail a couple big workouts that will happen.
Ouch. Live and learn.
Thanks, might be more to come like this until I get through the diet phase 😆
Like others, dieting is the hardest part for me. I need to lose 10 kg, but don't want the scrawny look of many runners...
Haha 😂 yeah we runners don't look tough especially when we've been through a dieting phase 😉 I suppose we could go heavy in the gym but that it's the weight back on...🤔
I think you need to lose weight before the heavy training block. Slow fat burning plods and reduced calories. I was a lot heavier but lost 2 stone before I became a serious runner. Dieting now on my mileage/effort would be tough as I crave a lot of food. I’d like to know though if I’d be quicker if I was 5kg lighter.
Thank Kenny. Yeah for me same as last time took about 10 to 12 weeks to get 10kg off for last MCR race and never really put it all back on but most of it 😂 but this year I went away before it and got in the habit of eating too much because I wasn't putting weight on, when i got back I kept eating to much to a certain extent as it gave me the energy for workouts 😂 I think there comes a point that we can loose so much weight but to go that extra 5kg or whatever requires so much more dieting effort it's maybe not worth the effort but we are all a little bit different. I'm about 2kg down now and not too difficult to do, once I get to 10kg (if) after that it might be so hard so not really thinking of going that far.
Really want to try these. 😢
I hope you can Will. I wonder if they have an ASICS shop near you. I was really lucky to try them on in the expo but I don't think you would be disappointed if you just bought them (90 day return policy)
I find the dieting hard too Matt. To lose a few pounds but keep running strength I find really difficult.
Yeah well said Dean 😁 Nightmare but it's part of the challenge 🤣 It's great though once we get to goal weight 😃
Nice job filming. I loved your attitude through the struggle.
thank you topoisomerace !! appreciate you watching and commenting 😃 Did you run vancouver this year or thinking of it sometime ?
"that went reasonably well, very well", yet was 15 minutes off target! Love your easy-going attitude! I'm doing Edinburgh next week so watching vids for some intel. I have to say I'd be very disappointed missing my goal by 15 minutes though.
Thanks Yellowfolder 😄 good luck with Edinburgh, wish you all the best and hope you hit your target 🎯 yeah I have to be honest with myself, while I'm not giving up im not getting any younger, but not accepting defeat yet 😂 that was a tough one actually after I'd ran Vancouver a month before and Manchester a month before that.
: 8:09 that's me giving you the shout out! I did the marathon and came in at 04:18:52 which I was pleased with. Great content, keep it up! 👍
Thank you John 😃 appreciate the shout out and this follow up message too. Glad you you had a great race and it must have been a hot finish. How was it running up the hill to the stadium 3 times ? That must have been tough, kudos to you 👍 I'll try the Gateshead marathon one day !
@@RunThePlanet It was tough but I enjoyed the route which helped, 3 laps didn't feel to onerous either. I did the Town Moor marathon last year (7 laps) and this was way better!
@@JohnDoe-ut6zi 7 laps of anything for a marathon is tough I'm sure. Ive though about those car race circuit marathons (running GP events) but that kind distance must be too much, maybe one day. Maybe if we could sign up for the full then tap out after a number of laps and still pick up a lower medal say the half or 20 mile 😁
Hi Matt, great video combining the product review of the Asics shoes with your track 800's and the 2x 10k on the road. Nice testing. I'll probably have to invest in carbon plate shoes for my fall marathon.
Thanks Reto, I think it's quite difficult to buy top end running shoes without carbon or some kind of plate these days. But yes I agree I think a carbon shoe will help alot for the back end of a marathon when the legs get tired.
Quality testing video and the shoes look absolutely class, little on the pricey side for us though 😅😅
Thanks Raley, yeah we are all saying that about the price 🫨 as someone else mentioned hopefully they'll be in the sales eventually.
Nice video Matt. Looks like you are in love! Looking forward to seeing you race in these. I'll keep tabs to see if they ever come down in price but at present can't justify buying another pair of supershoes.
Thanks Kenny, yeah don't think I ever spent this much on them, but I got sold after testing and speaking to the designers at the Tokyo expo. dare I say it they might be better than the vaporfly2 🫨🫨
Nice work Matt, sub-45 is excellent only 3 weeks after Manchester. I’ve just done the Geneva 10K and Manchester 10K in less than 2 weeks😬
Thanks Andy, and well done doing those 2 of 10ks too. That's great work 😃 You'll be running the marathon before long I'm sure

They look a really good shoe Matt. We absolutely love your run route. It's beautiful there. Enjoyed this one 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Dean, yeah it's a cracking route, and this time of year especially. Winter can be a bit tough too, or when windy which it often is 😂 but glad I've got nearby, could be alot worse.
