Happiness Through Subtraction
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed měsícem
Although financial independence isn’t the answer to all your problems and won’t bring complete happiness, it can increase happiness through subtraction. If you want to use money to make you happier, stop thinking about what you can buy with it. Instead, think about how you can use it to remove the things in your life that make you unhappy. Health is similar to finances in that there are many overly-complex things people say you need to do, but there are just a few simple things that actually matter. What is the "spend less than you earn, invest in a diversified/low-fee portfolio, and leave it to grow/compound" of the health world? That's what today's episode is about! Parker Hewes wrote a book called Lifelong Youth: The Simple Pa...

On today’s episode of the Financial Independence Podcast, I welcome back Chad Carson from CoachCarson.com! Chad just released a new book called The Small and Mighty Real Estate Investor, and I wanted to get him back on the show to talk about it. I’m not a real-estate investor though. So rather than interview him myself, my real-estate-investor friend, Jillian Johnsrud, did the interview for me!...
Ramit Sethi - How to Spend (and Actually Enjoy It)

On today’s episode of the Financial Independence Podcast, I welcome back Ramit Sethi from I Will Teach You to Be Rich! I needed someone to come on the show to provide some tough love and Ramit was the only person for the job. As Ramit mentioned during our last interview, FIRE people are great at knowing what NOT to spend on but we’re not good at knowing what to spend on. Spending is going to be...

welcome back
These are great! I remember reading this _years_ ago and I love getting the refresh. My last job move was about a year and a half ago and I got about a 70% raise with a smaller and more exciting company. Despite how it sounds, I work notably less, down to a normal 40 hours a week (and sometimes less), all while getting much better pay. I have to imagine that me reading this post originally when I was early in university helped establish the job movement mindset before I got into the work force. Big thanks, Brandon!
🤘🏻
All true. Just strange how much of a mindgame it all is nowadays
You should record an audiobook with all the posts and great advice, i could listen to you talking for hours
Hey goood to see you
An excellent episode
Great video, I can relate as I fell into the same tunnel vision trap on my FI journey. I enjoyed reading this article back in the day and it is great to hear it again. I also really enjoyed the book Antifragile and the via negativa concept of subtraction. This is a good reminder and something I am working on again, thank you for sharing!
You don't have the coolest kid, I have the coolest kid!
Regarding "solving for miles instead of fulfillment" I had that same situation. My work is sending me out of town and i wanted to segue from there to see a friend. I couldn't quite make it work like i normally would so I burned way more points than i would have to have the trip i want
Love it! ❤❤❤
Love it! ❤❤❤
hey Brandon good to see you back again, would love you to record more You have such great content and ideas
🤘
I'm glad you're back! I heard grumpus Maximus is doing something similar. Going to start posting audio clips of old and new articles
Ha, who is that?!
I hit my target number a while ago and I did it like you. Put my head down tunnel vision and alienated friends/family. I am now sub 2.5% swr and still working because I have to save more than just what I need due to old parents who need help from time to time due to them only getting small social security checks.
hey man good to see you back, pls record more often
it doesn't has to be 1h long, even 10min long would be nice
Neat episode concept! I'd love if you did more of these, especially if you throw in some modern commentary and reflections on the article and if your opinions have changed over time.
That's a great idea, thanks!
👍👍👍
❤❤❤
Is the latest revised book the same exact content as previous plus some new material?
In a very basic differences to the normal FI thinking I am hearing: 1) be more like Coast FI , 2) Spend down the principal not just interest, 3) Do the experiences more we are younger and fit rather than overly prioritizing future
Shifting from regular FI to coast FI as the goal has been very liberating!
@@TheGreatAgnostic totally, I'm sure that's a massive shift and so liberating! I only got on this FI path in my late 30s. 40 now. Coast fi has always been the way I'm going for. It's so much more reasonable and for both the present you and the future you.
🤔 🤔 🤔
This episode got me to reduce my savings rate a bit to focus on travel and lifestyle now.
I might be in the wrong demographic for this podcast. I do things like the tour del paine like every year but on a budget.
I guess its a good concept when you're a high income earner.
Bought Die with Zero on kindle yesterday after seeing your vid and it's completely changed everything. I'll be taking time off with the kids in the next couple of years while they are young and give them their inheritance when they turn 30. Until I read the book I thought handing them millions when I passed away was the ultimate gift. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I retired at 55 and can travel then my back went out for carrying a backpack to travel. He’s speaks the truth. I missed out on so many great travel opportunities when I was younger because I didn’t want to use my unused sick days.
Sorry for your back getting jacked up. I'm really relating to the whole "prison" comparison, and am do glad I had my kids when I was young bc I'll be free at 50 instead of 60 or 70, barring some situation like my kid dying and I need to raise a young grandchild. In such a case, none of this means much anyway, and u just need to truck on to be the role model the child deserves in the shit-tuation we're in
Could have done with this episode in March , 1987 .
We need a conversation between Brandon and Bill
Ha, I would have asked the same questions, but just in a more dull-sounding voice 😂 It would be fun to talk to Bill one day though, so what should I ask him if I get the chance?
At 27:44 "the further you go in your future the less your visibility". Amazing wake up call to live life now. As you grow older your vision gets blurry but so is the vision of the future. Risk is fear, fear of failure which is associated with the ego. Freken profound and deep. Amazing how this capitalist society/culture programs people to live on a hamster wheel like this is the way the world works. What crack of bull cheet program we're buying into? Why people in other parts of the world are much happier with less? Thanks for this fine upload.
Thank you 😊👍.

I keep coming back to this episode. Ramit has a lot of good advice for the traditional FI mindset to help enjoy more. I love the pressure he was adding to make you enjoy yourself!
❤❤❤
Valuable insight to look back at what people were saying in March 2020. Whatever podcast or talking head you enjoy listening to now, take some time to listen to what they were saying in the spring of 2020. You might be surprised.

Hi Mad Fientist - I use your FI Lab & seem to be locked out of my account. I did not change my password, yet it says that I am using the wrong password. Tried to change it, yet I am not receiving the e-mail to change it. Any help you can provide to get my access back would be helpful because this is all I use to track my networth.
Why does JL Collins recommend transferring into bonds as opposed to just cashing in some fund units say once a month, like you used to get a wage? (As long as you have a cash cushion as well for when the stock market is down?)
I really want to know what Vanguard Global fund JL Collins recommends for the UK investor! Seems it's a toss up between Global All Cap and All World. Slight differences in charges and whether emerging markets covered.
Your content inspired my path to fire a decade ago. Can’t thank you enough for your efforts and time spent sharing your knowledge with us.
Thanks for sharing
I love MMM. His advice was key to my early FIRE days. Thanks for posting!
