  • Out of all the episodes of the Financial Independence Podcast, this is the one I wish I heard when I was on my journey to financial independence.
Bill Perkins, author of Die with Zero, joins Chris Hutchins on the All the Hacks podcast to discuss what money is really for - maximizing net fulfillment.
This interview is incredible, so I reached out to Chris to ask if I could share it with you all, and thankfully he agreed!
    HIGHLIGHTS
    - Why you should maximize for net fulfillment rather than net worth
    - When is the best time to allocate money to get the most fulfillment
    - Why you should time bucket your experiences instead of having a bucket list
    - How to break out of earning-saving-investing autopilot
    - Why you should fear wasting your life more than running out of money

Bought Die with Zero on kindle yesterday after seeing your vid and it's completely changed everything. I'll be taking time off with the kids in the next couple of years while they are young and give them their inheritance when they turn 30. Until I read the book I thought handing them millions when I passed away was the ultimate gift. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I retired at 55 and can travel then my back went out for carrying a backpack to travel. He’s speaks the truth. I missed out on so many great travel opportunities when I was younger because I didn’t want to use my unused sick days.

Sorry for your back getting jacked up.
I'm really relating to the whole "prison" comparison, and am do glad I had my kids when I was young bc I'll be free at 50 instead of 60 or 70, barring some situation like my kid dying and I need to raise a young grandchild. In such a case, none of this means much anyway, and u just need to truck on to be the role model the child deserves in the shit-tuation we're in

Regarding "solving for miles instead of fulfillment" I had that same situation. My work is sending me out of town and i wanted to segue from there to see a friend. I couldn't quite make it work like i normally would so I burned way more points than i would have to have the trip i want

This episode got me to reduce my savings rate a bit to focus on travel and lifestyle now.

Ha, I would have asked the same questions, but just in a more dull-sounding voice 😂 It would be fun to talk to Bill one day though, so what should I ask him if I get the chance?

In a very basic differences to the normal FI thinking I am hearing: 1) be more like Coast FI , 2) Spend down the principal not just interest, 3) Do the experiences more we are younger and fit rather than overly prioritizing future

Shifting from regular FI to coast FI as the goal has been very liberating!

@@TheGreatAgnostic totally, I'm sure that's a massive shift and so liberating! I only got on this FI path in my late 30s. 40 now. Coast fi has always been the way I'm going for. It's so much more reasonable and for both the present you and the future you.

I might be in the wrong demographic for this podcast. I do things like the tour del paine like every year but on a budget.
