  • On today’s episode of the Financial Independence Podcast, I welcome back Ramit Sethi from I Will Teach You to Be Rich!
I needed someone to come on the show to provide some tough love and Ramit was the only person for the job.
As Ramit mentioned during our last interview, FIRE people are great at knowing what NOT to spend on but we’re not good at knowing what to spend on.
Spending is going to be a big focus on the Mad Fientist this year and I can’t think of a better way to kick off this discussion than by getting yelled at by Ramit so hope you enjoy it!
    HIGHLIGHTS
    - Why we doubled our annual spending (and was it worth it)
    - What Ramit did to make me get all clammy and uncomfortable
    - Why pay less when you can pay more
    - How to imagine your own rich life
    - Why you should start wasting some money at a certain point

I keep coming back to this episode. Ramit has a lot of good advice for the traditional FI mindset to help enjoy more. I love the pressure he was adding to make you enjoy yourself!

I say do FI first then do Ramit’s suggestions after.
I disagree with Ramit saying people have been taught not to spend and just save like crazy ..( ehem that’s for the FiRE community) and should learn how to spend to enrich your life. However, I 100% agree one has to learn how to spend to enrich one’s life but the problem with society at present is they just spend and spend mindlessly! That’s why so many are drowning in debt. That’s where mindful spending from the FIRE community comes from.
We always have to remember that FI is a must, while RE is optional. And i do know from experience that when your brain is wired to be frugal for many years, it is very difficult to spend on luxury.
We all have an inner compass that will assist us when to spend. And this concept will crop up on us anyway as we continually seek betterment for our selves.
I am a fan of Ramit though! He is eloquent and fun to listen to. 😁
