Basketball shoes and running shoes are very different. As someone who played basketball in high school, the difference in a running shoe and a basketball shoe is huge. I'm not sure of the specifics, but you can't hard stop in a running shoe like you can in a basketball shoe. I remember playing basketball in running shoes once and nearly blowing out the front all over the place. The grip is different as well. And the ankle support of a basketball shoe is sturdier and usually the sole has a wider base. Basketball shoes also have more exotic styles to them.
