Newly Discovered PRIMITIVE WATER FILTER! 100% Effective
According to the CDC, waterborne disease killed over six thousand people last year in the US alone. Waterborne pathogens such as e. coli, cryptosporidium, and giardia are prevalent in many surface water sources. There are several primitive methods for water purification including surface wells (gypsy well), boiling, and other primitive water filters which utilize some combination of course substrate, plant materials, and charcoal. I recently found a research article from MIT (link below) that showed the xylem tissue of gymnosperms effectively filtered out all bacteria from contaminated water. In this video I set up a filter using those findings but also, using a never before seen method using grape vines as both a siphon and filter in one. A lab analysis confirmed the presence of e. coli bacteria in the water to be filtered. The water that passed through the grape vines had no detectable e. coli bacteria! You can't do any better than that with the best whole house water filter. This has practical uses in backpacking, survival situations, wilderness living, camping, etc.

I didn't Expect THIS! 3 Day Solo SURVIVAL CHALLENGE
zhlédnutí 43KPřed 16 hodinami
Every now and then it's good to just take off on a solo camping trip and see what happens! That's what I did on my most recent outing, a solo survival challenge, where I canoed about 30 miles over 3 days with no food or shelter, and only one bottle of water. I only brought that because I wanted to try to make a solar fire from the water bottle. Spring/Summer in Florida can be unforgiving and al...
Revealing the Secrets of the Hand Drill FRICTION FIRE!

Nothing says primitive skills quite like a hand drill friction fire. There's just something about the process of making a hand spun fire that conjures up images of primitive man. Once you understand friction fire techniques, it's not all that hard but the process can seem mysterious for those new to primitive survival skills and bushcraft. This video is kind of a hand drill friction fire 101 so...

As a Botanist with both a B.S. and M.S. you got a lot of the anatomy and physiology of water movement through plants completely wrong… dead wrong actually. Functional xylem is non-living tissue. In conifers the xylem consists of tracheids which are indeed short, xylem tissue of angiosperms (your grape vine) the xylem consists of vessel tube elements which are 1) dead. 2) short… like 40 microns…short. The are stacked one on top of another to form long ‘vessels’ or tubes and they distinctly do not have membranes to filter material out. Tracheids are pointed at each end with no continuous channel. If the plant is intact (with roots) the roots do have a structure (a suberized (meaning rubberized) layer in one cell layer surrounding the central portion of the root called the stele, this does force inflowing water to cross at least one membrane, but until water reaches that band it doesn’t have to cross a membrane. If you do a Google search of vessel element vs. tracheids you’ll see the difference. Glad that the procedure works for bacteria…. Now all you have to worry about are hepatitis, Nora virus and polio (which we had licked but now kids aren’t getting vaccinated and it’s making a comeback, sadly). Won’t filter out any toxins or heavy metals in solution either. Other than that , nice presentation and were applicable appears to work better than the gravel/sand/charcoal method…. Maybe you could add the charcoal method at the end. :-)

Clay, As I watched, wait let me start again. As we watched you and Xander during this hunt, we were all waiting for you to make that shot that would bring an end to a long and drawn out hunt. We all saw both of you celebrating in the harvesting of an elk. The shear enjoyment of the success of the hunt. The breaking down of the animal and cooking up the first meal. In our minds eyes, we also saw your family benefiting in your energy to attain the meal that would feed the for many meals to come. And when it didn't happen, you showed us, that life doesn't always have storybook endings. We also saw what people for generations did in their search of food for their people and tribe. Princes don't always get the pretty girl. The victory doesn't happen with celebrations. But sometimes life wins, and we move on. Thanks for the humility and suffering for us. I've been the Sherpa of many hunts, carrying the prize home only to continue to work to get it cut down, package and stored in the freezer, so it could be celebrated later, with each meal. Thank you for bring us along. Skillet

Survival situation.... Get about 8-10 of those bad boys going... gallons of clear water... then boil it just to be extra sure and you will have clear, clean, most likely very clean tasting water. Super low tech, easy to accomplish, Very good information to have. and even if you cant create fire to boil the water... Odds are pretty good you will be ok, risk is far outweighed by reward.

And you can run it straight out of pond overnight in bucket (if available) doesnt just have to be out of jar.
