- The 2023 bowhunting season is just about over but we're back in the mountains for one last chance to put some venison in the freezer. Late season deer hunting with a self bow or recurve bow can be challenging, especially when the winter weather never arrives to start the deer migration. Nevertheless, we caught up with some of the resident deer and I made a good shot on a fat doe with my osage selfbow while hunting public land. With the light fading and the temperature dropping, I took a tenderloin out, built a fire and cooked the deer meat right in the coals. It was fantastic. Great hunt Clay. Nice to see some Midwest Whitetail tactics mixed with Western. Only recently have traditional bowhunters in this area started using loadshelfs and packing out Whitetails. In Mo they can get big and require two packs but its still more efficient then dragging. Treestands in the pines would be fun...congrats on the tenderloin!! Good job.

Love the fire starting technique, praying for snow seems weird for the rookies amongst us. Hoping for some dry or just very cold weather here in the UK 🇬🇧 so I can drive my car to within a few hundred yards of my high seat / tree stand rifle hunt. 😂. My 64 years is really no excuse just very different geography. Amazed that you are able to film and hunt so well. As always, thanks for sharing.

I had a trip last winter. My friend was hiking with me to show me an area i could set up... hes got a beautiful husky. It was a 2 mile hike across questionable ice. And i think his dog recognized that... or maybe she just did not like the slush on her paws. But she ran off right after we hit the ice. It was scary and i was worried the whole week i was out there. But when i got back... it was just like i said... "she will probably be waiting at the truck for you when you get back. And sure enough... she was. Dogs are kind of smart that way. She remembered where we parked and she went right back. But there were cayotes out there. Luckily bears were hibernating. But he was really worried the cayotes would get her. But yea. I feel for your buddy. Its nerve wracking not knowing. Im glad your buddys pup showed back up.

Great tactic to utilize the tree stand for the late season hunts. I've been wondering about packing a tree stand up the mountain for the late season rut hunt here in southern Idaho. It's tough to stalk in on the crunchy snow. Great video!

Great video Clay and you were able to harvest a nice deer.Must be a great feeling when you are able to do hunts luke this with bows and arrows you have made by yourself. Are the flint rifle season over or are you planning for another trip.Watching your videos makes me very happy and relaxed.I can't do it myself since I'm using an electric wheelchaire and most of the time I have to spend in bed.It's a great pleausure to watch your videos .Wish you lot of good hunting.
