Life in the Mountains | 2023 Elk Hunting

- Each September, the Hayes family packs up and heads to the mountains. For how long? Well, that depends on how good the elk hunting is. This year is different though because the youngest, Fen has a public land rifle elk hunt that opens after the archery elk season. That means that, even if Clay and Liz tag out during the archery season, we won't break camp until Fen has a chance to hunt in October. We live in a wall tent, cook sourdough bread in a Dutch oven, sleep on cots, hunt, hike, and fish. Liz and the boys even continue homeschool activities at elk camp. For the fall elk bow hunting season we live life in the mountains.

I love it. I have hunted right close to where you are. this year we were one ridge over antelope archery hunting my boys and I. I have 3 sons. One got a nice buck one got a nice doe. Pretty sure it's the same area. Love it. They are done with their home schooling and are married. But we still have races in the creek like your boys. We race left over hamburger buns with an M & M on it. LOL

I appreciated the emphasis on time together and hard work. It was really nice to not have to sit through five minutes of different sweeping angles of grip-n-grins. The experience as a family far outweighs any set of antlers and I am glad your production makes it so clear what you value as a hunter and dad.

what an incredible adventure. I've been blessed to hunt with my kids their entire lives. Now we have our first grandson with number 2 on the way. Nothing like an evening in the wall tent, by the stove with grouse cooking at the end of a great hunt. thanks so much for sharing this.

I believe that the vast majority of hunting media and entertainment is generating negative impacts for hunting and leading the hunting community down an road that has a dim future. In my opinion your content is the exception and I think that your message has a positive impact. I could write a 10 hr. post explaining WHY, but I am just going to say THANK YOU. Great video. Im sorry to hear about Lily. I lost my boxer to old age 5 years ago and still haven’t gotten over it. The first video of yours that I watched, I saw Lilly and broke down. She looked exactly like my Roxy. She was my outdoor buddy too. I never went anywhere without her. It’s amazing how much of your heart those dogs fill and super painful when they leave. Your new pup seems really cool. He makes me giggle. Maybe someday soon I’ll try to find a new outdoor buddy. Thank you for sharing your amazing life and adventures.

I had 223 rounds wizz by my camper last deer season from a group of kids shooting at a rock around the corner. I normally wouldn't engage, but in this case I couldn't help it. It actually went really well and they agreed they should be more careful next time. Unlike the time I almost got shot sighting in my rifle at a public range...

Always loved those mountains. Next year my dad is coming up to join the hunt with me, even if he does not draw a tag, he wants to come up and see this neck of the woods. Excited about next september. Keep up the great work and i love your down to earth no nonsense way of showing stuff.

Makes me appreciate you taking that bad shot opportunity and not apologizing. It’s part of hunting. It makes me feel a bit better about myself knowing that it still happens to you with all of your experience hunting and taking game. Probably something no true hunter ever will be able to totally overcome. Always going to occasionally have a shot you take where afterwards you simply shake your head in disgust with yourself.
