- While packing up for elk camp in early September, one of the local farmers stopped by and said he'd seen loads of deer coming out into a bean field the evening before. With archery season in full swing in the western states, Liz and I head out to see if we can get the drop on an early season buck. Since the deer are feeding in the fields at night, we find a likely spot in a timbered funnel to set up our tree stands. Not a half hour after getting settled in, a huge buck comes by at only 60 yards but well outside Liz's range. Next a big doe comes by but Liz can't get her bow drawn without spooking her. After sunset, we take the stands down and move them the next day over to where the big buck had crossed.

Great video. Better than watching the pros. I've been hunting for over 50 yrs and still have that feeling about taking a life but we are meat eaters and it's the circle of life. If you would have shot the first doe that came along, you wouldn't have had the chance at the big one! Good things come to those that wait. You have an excellent teacher. Congratulations!

We all feel sad when we harvest deer and elk iam 65 years ago been hunting my whole life and I still get choked up. Every single time I get the opportunity to take a animal. I feed my mily. And myself. We don't waste anything. I'll bet your husband gets choked up. Very nice buck. Don't let that choked up feeling go away. It is what keeps our respect for the game we hunt .

Awesome Video Clay and Congrats Liz! Not being a hater but you need to shorten Liz's draw length on her bow and shorten the length of her release, so she can wrap her index finger around the trigger.
Totally agree.
All of my 4H archery kids that comes to practice with a new bow from Scheels or Cabela's is set up like that. Every year I wind up teaching the kids how to change their draw length and draw weight too. It's a lot of fun to watch them grow. I always fix the problem for them when they first get their bows though, because it's easier to start with good form than to fix bad form.

I thought the same. Mine is too long, and its not that far past the corner of my mouth at full draw. But, if she is consistent, and has proper arrow flight, and the string isnt catching her left forearm, hunt on. Congrats, nice buck

Liz demonstrated real courage in climbing up to and descending from the hanging stand you put up for her. A serious "discomfort" with heights afflicts a lot of us, and it's no joke. (I use either a stationary ladder stand or a ground blind for this reason.) I can also relate to her mixed feelings about killing that handsome buck. The older I get, the more I appreciate the lives of the game animals I take. Thanks to both of you for sharing this special hunt with us. Best, Chris (in Maine)
I was holding my breath. Nice first Deer, and a perfect shot that shows practice pays off. My first big buck from a tree stand I twisted the arrow and it fell off then I got so rattled I dropped the bow. The buck looked up at me and just walked away.

Great shot, and nice buck!! I want to reiterate what someone else said in the comments. I really think the draw length on her bow needs to be shortened up. It will make it much easier for her to draw the bow, especially. from a sitting position. I've been bowhunting for almost 50 yrs, for what it's worth. 😢
