Nature Powered Rotisserie! Bushcraft CATCH & COOK

  • On a recent camping trip into the wilderness I was lucky enough to shoot a grouse with my self bow. And since it's been a while since I did any catch and cook videos I thought I'd try a fun bushcraft cooking project. The nearby stream offered a perfect power source for a bushcraft rotisserie! I plucked the grouse and trussed it with a thin willow branch, built the rotisserie, and cooked the grouse over the fire until it was golden brown and dripping with fat! A little tough as wild birds tend to be but delicious!

Hey Clay. You know what blows me away most about your videos? They contain something of everything we humans do: science, engineering, art, mistake, adaptation, thoughtfulness, movement, stillness, connection, solitude, craftsmanship, practicality, precision, planning, successive approximation. You illustrate beautifully how the living world gives rise to these things in us, if we just listen and respond to that greater living consciousness... Our finest and most compassionate teacher. Thank you.

Thank you for eating grouse legs on film. So so many people breast them and throw the rest away, but I’ve roasted the legs a couple of times and they’re like little chicken wings, but better. Total shame to waste them. Though you do need a few birds to make a solid snack of them.

Of course it was worth it. Sitting there watching your work knowing you could have just threw it on a stick. You know why you do it. What you showed was passion. Doing what we love and getting better at it through trial and error is what makes us unique. I’d say the real question is, “What’s your passion?” Clay you’re a legend. I can’t wait to see what you teach us next. Stay wild brother.

Clay, the grouse looks so good I can almost taste it. The trouble I can see is the time it takes to make the stream propelled rotisserie. A simple hand turned rotisserie would have had the grouse cooked in the time it took you to build the stream rotisserie. Great craftsmanship if that is to be a reusable device though, and I am sure it is reusable. I was getting hungry watching you buid that thing. I love the taste of wild grouse. Please keep doing these bushcraft videos.

Hello Clay and family, hope this finds you all well. Right out of the gate let me sat that no, by no means was it worth it. The cringe I got from watching a hand made arrow fly away for less calories plus bird prep time was real lol. Next is never make a bipod when a tripod is so easy, stable and self standing. I would also save a lot of effort and just make the wheel out of pinky sized spokes and just weave that spruce root around for the center in a spiral like making a basket. A locking connection is as easy as making your spit rod with a fork and then tying it off after sticking it through the center spiral of spokes root. Small leaves in a split on the spokes will make paddles. You can also dig a trench if the water is shallow so more of the spoke pushed by the water instead of using paddles. I always split my root to make good cordage because it is like a bow stave and won't break against itself that way, but for cooking your bird and making that wheel it wouldn't matter. And on the bigger point, this kind of stuff in my opinion is just for fun, city people wanting modern luxury kind of thing lol. It made for a good video but I waited all my life to see your Penobscot bow really happen. Something I will never forget. Heat treating green bows was off the charts too. I think the last time I wrote was about the one piece dead fall trigger mods. I'm just saying that your skills and talents are lost doing armchair bushcrafter projects. Anything that will show a man how to craft things to live, trap, hunt or fight from nature the way ancient or native people did is where I think your awesomeness would be best applied and probably your enjoyment as well. Just saying with ultimate respect and a view from the outside that could be dead wrong lol. All the best as always, Mike.

If you didn't have running water You could even do a rock/log weight on one side and a lighter counter weight on the other with a wrap around the spit in the middle and just reset the weights occasionally like a cuckoo clock. A pully would make it efficient but you could certainly just throw it over a limb or a pulley would not be to hard to fashion with some hollowed out wood and a piece of tight rope.
