The movie was a horror flick that represents to many of our lives. The better part was reading the comments after watching. What we grew up with, as normal, has been shaded from what made us who we are; good and bad and extremely sad!

@@carolynbeguing7462you're so right about the 60s and 70s and the crazy things that happened to kids with no one to protect them in fact if you spoke up then everybody said you were the trouble caused her and stop causing trouble for your great family. When they didn't even know the real truth what was going on and when you tried to tell them they close their ears whether it was school, the police, pastors... It didn't really matter if you were a kid and you went to an adult for things then the other adults around you would find a way to nullify that person's help for you. They were usually told to stay out of it and that it was a family matter 🤔☹️✌️❤️🌌🌠🫵

@@shawneenhammer4241 It's still happening today. I know a woman who keeps her 4 grandchildren and abuses them. She makes them do all the housework, and she seems to get a thrill from hitting them, sending them to bed hungry, or making them get up late at night on a school night because the bathroom wasn't clean enough. A teacher reported her because she saw a bruise on a child's leg. They came out to check it out but saw how clean the house was; looked around a bit but never questioned the children and left. Their mother is now free to try to get them back. They are small children. Please pray their mother can get them back. I thought, how sad. They thought everything was fine because the house was clean, and it was those babies that were forced to clean it. She's been called on a few times, but nothing ever happens to her. She kicked one of her own sons out when he was 16. He has scars on his back from a wire clothes hanger.

There are lots of families around the world whose lives are portrayed in this movie. Perhaps it's a good idea to let all ES and HS pupils see it so that they can be able to recognize and understand the nature of ABUSE, and abusive relationships. It may allow authorities to rectify it before it becomes caustic to the point of destroying lives forever.

There are many forms of abusive. Sometimes it's one parent never asking about a child's day or looks that hurt, just that. I hated it when my father took me along hunting. Wet marsh grass, two of his brothers talking about things that made me cringe, then there was the bloody news of the day spread out on the utility room floor. I so disliked helping my father skin a rabbit. I finally said something to my mother. She must have mentioned it to my father; he never asked me along again and that was fine with me.
My father had this booming voice. He seldom said anything at supper and when he did it was as if he were yelling across a river. My younger brother would concur. Once when I closed the door of the bedroom that I shared with my brother so I could listen to a record, my father shouted, "Leave the door open!" I said, "You have the television turned up so loud I can't hear what I'm listening to," and closed the door. My father stomped across the living room and pushed the door of our bedroom open. "I said leave it be!" "Why?" I said and he pushed me into a corner and raised one of his big fists as if he were going to hit me. I said, defiantly, "Go ahead, hit me." I was eleven years old.
Our father moved us from one town to another. We attended a number of schools. I went to three high schools and four elementary schools. It was like that for my younger brother too.
My father's idea of teaching me to swim was to throw me into a lake. The swim or sink method. I almost drowned. My mother said at the time, "What were you thinking!" Just before we moved from southern Indiana to Sunland, California in 1961, I asked my mother if we were really going to move to California. She said, "I think so, but your father has to think it's his idea." Then she added, "You don't have to share that with anybody but your brother." Our younger sister would have said something to daddy.
Our father never asked us to go to work with him, always on Saturday. He just said, "Get up. You're going to work today." I put up with it until I was eighteen. One morning I failed to rise and he poured a glass of cold water on my face to wake me." Such experiences was one of the reasons I joined the service, that and I knew I would be drafted right out of high school. Sadly, my younger brother had to deal with him while I was away, but I heard all about it when I was home on leave. It is no surprise that neither of us boys married.
Three weeks before our father died, he asked me to make him a BLT. I was so unkind to him and said, "I have somewhere to go this morning" and left. My father was very ill at the time. I think about that sandwich after all of these years. We don't get do-overs.
My father was only 62 when he passed away. Thought of his death hardly impacted me or my brother. Our mother lived to be 95. She made up for our father's aloofness. She made day an adventure. It's been nearly fourteen years since she died and still we replace the flowers on her grave every week. She is buried in the Catholic cemetery in San Luis Obispo, California. Our father is buried near the small rural village where he grew up. He would often leave and then come back. He was a rambling guy, our old man. We have visited his grave once since 1972.

Where was the sheriff of that town, he had to know? Where was the priest, he had to know? Where were the school authorities, they had to know? The people that had the authority and power to stop the abuse didn't. Shame on them. Heartbreaking movie.

I do say my mother was even more violent and what was worse, no one cared, or were to scared to scare. When I went to school with bruises and teachers would ask me what happened, I would say that my mother did it. Every single time, they would ask, what did you do to make her so angry. The Truth? I woke up and breathed. That's was enough for the hate to come spewing out.

Reading thru comments after watching movie…I agree but with positive spin on takeaway. Sure the family was very dysfunctional and things aren’t always what they seem (happy couple before they moved in with them). The man was a scared child. The y were all broken because of their secrets, especially the old man. But the ending, the couple went through that necessary painful process for a chance to not repeat history. It was either them reuniting or the wife just moving on…probably hauling her kids with her this time because living with her mom was the better option. I preferred for her to be with the sherif but she loved her husband and seen the good in him but he had hint of dad in him.

I'm not even 10 minutes in on this film, and already getting so triggered by the senior dad and mom. I couldn't put up with that 1 night! I'd have had our kids and us out if there by the next morning! If I made it that long! I'd rather our family sleep in our car and work things out another way than live with these people!

This movie confirms that before you marry into a family you should examine closely what the family dynamics are....that is if you would want to marry into a family as dysfunctional as this one.

I know a lot of people listed here liked this movie but, to me, this movie did not hold up. When it ended I thought "that's it?" I know there are a lot of dysfunctional families out there but the writers of this movie did not make this story believable. Any mother would have taken her children out of that house when the dog was purposely shot.

Real good movie. Loved her in Fried Green Tomatoes and love her in this movie. My neighbor beat his children for years. I keep waiting for his crazy son to show what a monster he really is. I know one day he'll turn on his monster of a father. Some monsters are born that way and some are made. And just like this mother she just watched the monster abuse her children for years. Even his mother and brother would run when he started beating them. No one but me tried to stop him but it did no good. The courts did nothing until she finally took her children and left and I was vindicated because the court knew I was telling the truth...

A very good and most important movie imo! Made a great impact on me! All the characters are characterized with great ambitions done by real good actors that never fails your imagination in how it works in real situations in the reality of life even though there could be challenges you want to change or overcome but if you bend as a willow tree it breaks you in the end of the process when you’re not willing to see with open heart, mind and soul. At the end you have to meet the facts of your two blindfolded eyes and got to understand and being aware of why you choose to live your life in the shadow be caused by all secrets bond to carry, heavy on your shoulders and mind. Be mindful, truthful and transparent to yourself as well as to others, supports the great Love in you! Loved this movie
