So, while the title name fits into the overall album theme about a day in a person's life, you nailed the meaning.

As other's have said the whole album is worth a listen and I think it one of the most influential ones of my younger years. I have it on cd and in my collection which I listen to often. All good. People talk about the poem at the end but it is bookmarked at the beginning by another.
Takes me back to my childhood...my dad used to play the moody blues, punk floyd and numerous other old bands. On Sundays when my mum was cooking the sunday roast dinner my dad would have the vinyl LPs blaring out. Im now 47 how quick does time go..

This is part of a concert filmed at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert took place in 2000. The song was first released in 1967. It was part of one of the first concept albums called Days of Future Passed also released in 1967. The song did ok in 1967 but was re-released in the 1970's and hit big.

As it turns out, The London Festival Orchestra was just a group of session players that the record label assembled to attempt to do an orchestral/rock album. The Moody Blues, whose potential was unknown, agreed to do the project, and it turned out to be a masterpiece. Just saw the 50th Anniversary concert in 2018.

Yes, the album version did have the grand orchestration except the outro included a spoken word poem, the Late Lament. The whole album is worth the time to sit down and listen, it's a great work of art with deep philosophical meaning.
A lot of the credit for whole record “Days of Future Passed” goes to Peter Knight who was an orchestral arranger for the record company. The band would write the songs and send them to Peter Knight and he would write the orchestra parts for the songs.
The Albert Hall had Awful acoustics, until they hung large mushrooms from the roof to reduce excess reverberation. Not sure when they were put up, I think it was early 70s.
The original album recording did have the orchestral ending on it. I suggest you listen to Days of Future Passed in its entirety. It was one of the first concept albums. The orchestra started the songs, then the band played it with guitars and metotron, then the orchestra finished the songs.
I actually like this version better than the original. The original album is with the orchestra (i1967), but the recording of the orchestra always - to me - sounds very compressed. Here, the recording of the orchestra is SO good. Justin, of course, nails this. I saw them a few times live (once it was front row center) and you can see how good these are.

My first big date was in 1967. I took her to see Moody Blues at The Filmore East Greenwich Village, NYC. We hopped on a subway from Bensonhurst to Manhattan. I had about two bucks in my pocket but I remember that incredible spring night. The Band was an hour late and the audience waited patiently for the five man band who turned out was having issues with the Mellotron, a keyboard that fired up audio tape to simulate an orchestra. I remember that experience today, and until my last breath.

It was a musical renaissance. We thought it would evolve forever more. The personal computer destroyed the cooperative nature for many of us.
Black is my favorite Pearl Jam song. I was lucky enough to see them do it right after that album came out when they came to my hometown and played an outdoor show and it was crazy. It was so good. But I love that song so much. I love that you made a connection between that and this. But you should also check out some live footage of them from back when they were young and also their Studio tracks are fantastic. I almost think you may have already done this one, but, I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band, that's a real banger by them. Definitely check out the studio version though.

To avoid confusion: on the album, this song is just called The Night, and it's the second-to-last track on the album, leading into the last bit which is spoken word. This album is often considered to be the first of the "concept" albums and a precursor to progressive rock.

This live version, their older and don't sound as good.

The single has been released a few times. I think it reached its best position in 1972. They don't do a bad job of the live sound, though obviously the studio recording is a bit smoother and rounded. The orchestra is wonderful, the band is fantastic, and the Late Lament is so memorable that you will want to memorize it. I've never heard the song "Black" but from your description, it reminds me of the Rolling Stones "Paint It Black". Maybe give it a listen if you get a chance. I've been a Moodies fan for most of my life and was at this show. Ray (flute) and Graeme (drums) have both sadly passed but Justin (lead vocals) and John (bass) still tour and they are now in their late seventies. Nice reaction!
This is an awesome version of this song and I always prefer live versions, but in this case what you missed was a soliloquy during the outro which is also very nice. As a "I prefer live" person, I am torn between this live version and the album version with the soliloquy - you should listen to that version too! Very had to choose a favorite between them....

Justin's vocal were so emotive. Unfortunately he's lost his range. I followed them on tour in, I think, 1996. in the UK. I met him once and he thanked me for a drawing I'd done of the album cover to his solo Night Flight album.

This is an awesome version of this song and I always prefer live versions, but in this case what you missed was a soliloquy during the outro which is also very nice. As a "I prefer live" person, I am torn between this live version and the album version with the soliloquy - you should listen to that version too! Very had to choose a favorite between them....
