This version ends right before the incredible orchestral section that leads into the haunting Late Lament, which will leave you with goosebumps. There is an old saying with this song, and it goes, "If you didn't hear the gong, you didn't hear the song," and it's true. The album version is called, simply, The Night, if you go looking for the true version of this classic song.
And the album starts with a gong. I love the opening piece. "Brave Helios, wake up your steeds. Bring the warmth the countryside needs".
Agreed. The full song is the full song. Everything else is an abbreviation.
I've never heard that version. I was stunned, they left out the heart of the song. Hope Salvo listens to the full version! I'm heading to find it now. I just can't leave it like that, lol!
A local AM radio station used to use the poem "Late Lament" as their sign off at midnight complete with final gong instead of the national anthem.
You should listen to their whole album, "Days of Future Pased." Peter Knight arranged the orchestrations for the London Festival Orchestra, the 'house orchestra' for Decca Records.
Knight also did one orchestration for Richard and Karen Carpenter for their song, "I Just Fall in Love Again," which is well worth listening to.
@@bilcal Yeah, I bought the album with my first paycheck when I was 16. Wish I could remember what I paid for it, LOL! I wore it out. I have the CD now. I'll check out that Carpenter song. Thanks!
That was the short version! Highly recommend the full length version!
Most definitely!!!
you'll like the long version better
I don't understand why only a couple reaction channels only review the studio version of this song when the live orchestra version is so amazing!
Just some of what you missed with this short version .
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and settles her son.............
Cold hearted orb, that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight...
Love that part of this song. Seems wrong without it.
New mother picks up and SUCKLES her son......Senior citizens wish they were young.......
chills
@@LAPhil13 chills
Exactly! The total song's vibe is bigger than the parts.
Nights in White Satin has a poetic interlude just prior to the ending. You must listen to the entire album "Days of Future Passed", I saw them in 2009 at Tanglewood, Mass. with a symphony orchestra. BEST EVER!!!!
Yes indeed
there is an incredible live version of this worth checking out on youtube.
Definitely worth a listen.
@@festidious2644 i never said it did
Oh no....is this just the short version, damn!
As many previously stated, the album version is really worth your time. You missed so much of the song with this edited version. In fact, the album - "Days Of Future Passed" where this song is from is one of the most celebrated albums in the history of music. It is a masterpiece, going through the course a day starting with dawn through the afternoon into the evening, then nights, thus "Nights In White Satin" If you get some time, I highly recommend it.
Justin Hayward, the lead singer, is in his 70s now and still has the same voice. There is a great live version from Royal Albert Hall in London and it's simply stunning.
I recommend you listen to the live version filmed at Red Rocks in front of the denver symphony orchestra. amazing period
The symphonic sound is like "satin". As others have said, PLEASE react to the longer version with the Late Lament and let us see your reaction. I love "Tuesday Afternoon" by the Moody Blues as well.
this is one of the few cases where there is a live performance better than any of the studio versions, but it is one they did with a full orchestra when they were older men.
Early live...not so much in the concert I saw in the early 2000s
This is definitely "lights out, late at night, through headphones" music. :) But as others have said, you have GOT to listen to the longer version, with the poem at the end. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful. Another great song on the same concept album is "Tuesday Afternoon" (or, as officially titled, "The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)"
The full version is even better and has so much more to it, including a very deep poem at the end of the song. But, you missed the best part of the orchestration reacting to the short version. It has quite an amazing and dramatic ending.
The Moody Blues were ahead of their time. People weren't as ready for their music when the song came out in 1967. I would strongly recommend listening to the live performance of this song where they play with a full orchestra. It's a totally different experience.
I was 12 when I first heard it in 1972 and I was in the youngest baby boomers group and told everyone how beautiful their song was loving softer music and classical while everyone in the rough middle school I was at liked hard rock...
The Moody Blues were way ahead of the times. Their Days of Future Passed has stood the test of time. Beautiful and different.
Not gonna read all the comments, just gonna say DO THIS AS A WHOLE ALBUM REACTION before you go any farther with them. It's Called Days of Future Passed, and it will change your life. Listen to it all at once, even if you feel the need to break the reactions up into smaller pieces, because it matters how each song leads to the one following.
SPOT-ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moody Blues was my generation's Classical Music! Just love them! 💖
I was born in 75 but Moody Blues was often played in our home. I always loved this one.
You described it perfectly as ethereal! This song and the album it appeared on are masterpieces! Since you liked this song then you'll like the rest of the album which has the same symphonic orchestration. This is a concept album with the lyrics telling a beautiful story of a someone's day from morning to the night. You heard the last song of the album, the night. The first time I heard this song back in the 60s it blew my mind; there was nothing like it then or since; it was so beautiful and the vocals so moving.
Good reaction, BUT when it comes to Prog and most anything, I must suggest that you play the album version. What you played was the radio version. As someone who loves symphonic prog/rock/metal, you missed out on one great ride. Consider doing a reaction to the album version. Keep up the good work and I enjoyed your live stream vote on Saturday.
There’s a great version on CZcams with a full symphony orchestra. The whole concert is awesome. ❤️
For their rocking side, I would recommend I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band). It was written in response to fans who would ask them the questions of life as if they had some cosmic insight based on their otherworldly lyrics and music.
You can't appreciate this song fully unless you hear that late lament. I can recite it from memory at 69 without googling it. That is the power that this song and those spoken words had as they took my soul's breath away.
This was one of my favorite songs of the early 70’s.Many songs by them are Really Good “ the Story in your Eyes” Tuesday Afternoon” “ Question” just to mention a few. 👍🏻❤️🎼
Saw them in the 90s when they were touring and playing with symphonies at each stop. It was amazing. Other songs: Question, The Story in Your Eyes, Wildest Dreams (a little different because it's an 80s hit), Tuesday Afternoon
Still one of my favorite songs EVER! You really should listen to the Album from beginning to end! One of the best concept albums ever!! Another great reaction! ❤ “Days Of Future Passed” take a listen! You will love it!
Late Lament
(Graham Edge)
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one;
Lonely man cries for love and has none;
New mother picks up and suckles her son;
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey is yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion
The Moody Blues
Love that part! I hope he listens to the entire song.
@@michelekossack1861 I think you mistakenly put this as a reply to my comment….copy and paste to a main comment! I don’t need an explanation of the song. I’ve had the album since 1971
Wow.... this was our Prom song in 1976. Memories. You should do this song live in much later years. So cool.
Truly a masterpiece and one of the first songs I remember hearing and being awestruck over as a young child in the late 1960's. I was too young to understand what the lyrics meant, but it's one of the reasons why I fell in love with music. I just watched a video today with Justin Hayward (the singer and writer of this song) performing it just a couple of months ago. He still sounds great for his age and it's still one of my favorite songs. "The Voice" is another of their songs that you might enjoy.
Must see the live version with the orchestra ! Justin sounds just the same as he did yrs ago! It’s the 2018 hall of fame ceremony!
1967 ... this song became a radio hit probably at least 3 different times. And everybody from back then knows the lyrics of the following part, the "Late Lament."
Oh, how the bands that we loved when we were teenagers have accompanied us throughout our lives. I still get chills and have a massive crush for Paul McCartney, David Gilmour and Justin Hayward (Moody Blues lead singer, lead guitar and songwriter). Almost all the Moodies' songs were written by Justin Hayward. Although I love all their songs, my favorite for deeply personal reasons is The Story In Your Eyes.
The entire album "Days of Future Past" that this comes from is one of those classic "have to listen to it in one go" albums. An early concept album, the entire thing is organized like the parts of a day.
The whole album is awesome. Days of Future Passed. Should listen start to finish.
The 67 single was by a band unknown in the US, by 72 people were VERY familiar with their work and this song, why it went so high.
I agree, you need to listen to the Live version with the full orchestra.
Explain it like this: some music is timeless. Because it’s great!
Justin Hayward went on to be involved with the War of the Worlds album, in particular ’Forever Autumn’ well worth a listen!
My first Moody Blues song, they have been a lifelong love of mine. Keep going down the rabbit hole!
I knew one of the original members of the Moody Blues...recorded with him around a year before he passed away.
PLEASE, you need to hear the FULL version with the orchestral and choral parts and Disneyesque (like Afternoon was), and the spoken poem!
You've landed on what many consider to be the birth of Progressive Rock. It followed on the heals of several innovative concept albums that proved rock could be more than just a few snappy tunes thrown together on an album - The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," The Mothers of Invention's "Freak Out," and The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper." Soon after others would soon follow, including Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson.
"Nights in White Satin" was crazy wonderful. I'm 72, got the album "Days of Furure Past" when it was released. I saw The Moody Blues in concert live about 1969 ~~~ Your waction is so much fun ! ~ By the way, Symphonic ? Have you ever heard "Appalchian Spring" by Modern American Classic Composer Aaron Copeland ? I reccommend it as a very large change of pace. ~ You will probably recognize parts of it. It is about 25 minutes !
Moody Blues is an album band. You drop the needle on the first song and the only time you lift it is to change sides. They take you on a wonderful journey of your own mind. Listening on headphones is the best. In Search for the Lost Cord album is one of my favorites, but it has to be the whole album. This is Days of Future Past… LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM!!!
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST!!!
I was fortunate to see them in concert about 10 years ago. They were all approaching 70 years old and sounded great.
Takes me back to the late sixties. Lot of great music back then.
Another great one from this era is the original "Whiter Shade of Pale" bu Procul Harum.
Back the radio friendly songs had to be around 3-3 1/2 minutes for AM radio. A slightly longer version would hit FM ans an album version would be full length.
There's a live version made 10-15 yrs ago with a full orchestra that is AMAZING
I've also always felt it sounded more modern- ahead of its time. Amazing instrumentation. The lyrics in the late lament ( another verse) get deeper and more mystical in the long version. Love that flute.❤
One of the best all time longing for love song. One of my all time favorites 💞💗
OMG! Love these guys! All time favorite!
My first introduction to Justin Hayward and John Lodge was from one of those albums that got sent when you forgot to choose one. My friend didn't care for it and gave it to me. I played that over and over. This was "Blue Jays". I still have that album. I wont say how old it is. LOL
Definitely watch the live orchestra version it so beautiful, the one you just listened to cut half of the beautiful symphony part out
So calming, relaxing. Classic, I remember being my first real musical 'love' at the age of 12, in 1972 while living in Germany (Army brat).
You must do the album version ❤🎶🎸👏🏼 You will be amazed 🔥
... if you like this single version, you are going to LOVE the full album version!!!
And no, not everything they do sounds like this. This is a very unique song.
My favorite song from them, and like others have said, I prefer the full version.
Tuesday Afternoon is very symphonic and another favorite. Question, Wildest Dreams, Ride My See-Saw, I'm just a Singer in a Rock 'n Roll Band, The Story in Your Eyes.
It’s not modern it’s timeless like beautiful music should be.
Their whole album called This is the Moody Blues is incredible!
This is the Moody Blues is a greatest hits album
@@micheleparadis2808 I'm not sure I'd even call it a "greatest hits" album because there are many deep album tracks on it, including a couple of remixes (e.g., "The Word" has the instrumental "Beyond" playing underneath). Rather, it's a smorgasbord taster that follows the format of their prior albums with each track merging into the next. It's very unique, non-traditional compilation album.
@@kivimik You know the word 'simplify' or the expression 'in simple terms'? that's what I was doing. I chose to use 'greatest hits' because it's the closest and simplest description of the album and, at the same, a great album to discover the Moody Blues
You should see The Live Version Years later with a Full Orchestra. The Man can Still Belt it out!😎😎
I knew others would leave comments about this but I need to add one more, lol: this is not the whole song!! I know it can be confusing when there are multiple versions but continue on and listen to the others-general rule of thumb for me, I always look for the longest version of any song. It is a classic and hauntingly beautiful song, glad you enjoyed it!
Breathe deep the gathering gloom...I was waiting for the rest of the song
I absolutely love this song even though this was my broken heart song 💔 took a while to heal and this helped
Thanks!!! My first concert with my stoner friends Sept 1971 they did have an orchestra. Many memories of that day still ,the friends, the rain, the street cars the opening act blind guitar player Charlie Starr, the Seattle coliseum roof leaking rivers of water Light a joint pass it along, good by. And these new fangled Bic lighters that lit up the crowd
Great description! I’m from Seattle…lived there then….missed that concert. Saw Zeppelin in Coliseum in ‘77….luckily not raining! 😉
The Moody Blues had been active as a band for over 50 years (1964-2018). It began as a British R & B outfit led by Denny Laine (later a guitarist for Paul McCartney's Wings). Their first (and only) big hit with Denny was "Go Now" (might be worth checking out for the contrast). After Denny Laine left the band in 1966 to pursue his own career, and their bassist, Clint Warwick left for family reasons, the band recruited John Lodge (bass) and Justin Hayward (guitars). When the band realized that the R & B sound left with Denny, they worked hard to develop their own voice, and "Nights in White Satin" was one of the results.
Because their career was so long, it's hard to give other suggestions. Some of their more well-known songs are: "Ride My See-Saw", "Question", "The Story in Your Eyes", "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams", and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere". One song in particular that I'd suggest that's perhaps atypical would be "Legend of a Mind"; it's a psychedelic tribute to Timothy Leary.
If this was released today it wouldn't be out of place. You tickle me when you try to sing along.
One of my favorite songs EVER! The vulnerability within his voice send chills throughout my body, listening to it the first time I remember getting an eargasm😁
So perfectly said….yes exactly me too ❤
Concert version is awesome. Also the one with poem at the end.
The full length LP version will blow you away. I promise!
Absolutely must listen to the longest version
That version leaves out the symphonic part. Def check out the long version called "The Night" complete with outro narrative.
Timeless Bomb Track
Dude, I'm a HUGE Moody Blues fan, and I'm psyched you're listening to them! You definitely need to listen to the full album version, but you really should do it in the context of the full album, Days of Future Passed. Other than that, from what you said you like, you should listen to Question next. So many incredible songs from them, I hope you listen to them all!
I'll add that they were an incredible band live, but when getting to know them, I'd recommend listening to the studio versions of their songs first.
Watch the live performance. It’s incredible Also, the entire Blum “Days of Future Past” will blow you away!
There was a time,in the 70’s ; back in El Salvador. Lito Moody always listening to the Moody Blues ; Julio “Yes” Clark. Lito Linares and I, always digging Jethro Tull. Gorgeous days, sadly they are all gone but, I’m still here. A privilege, thanks for the memories. Saw the Moody Blues at the Hollywood Bowl, way back.
You need the longest version of the song with gong at the end.
DEFINITELY check out the Album version!! Google the Lyrics that begin with: "Breath deep the gathering gloom.." (or just look below)
I remember I guy I was dating in the early 70s tried to turn me on to this group. I thought them boring. Little did I realize how great they are! One of my favorites still! ❤
The album this comes from, Days of Future Past, is worth listening to all the way through. It was one of the early concept albums that actually worked as a unified piece. This album also yielded another of the Moody's most popular songs: Tuesday Afternoon. Two of my other favorites are I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band) and Question.
♥ this song! I highly suggest these Moody Blues songs: Gemini Dream, Tuesday Afternoon, The Voice & I'm Just A Singer In A Rock & Roll Band
Ethereal is the perfect word for this song. I will never be able to hear it without thinking of my dad, who loved the Moody Blues and especially this song.
What a terrific taste you have in music my brother!
There is something that is very sweet and innocent about 60's music
You will love this rabbit hole, The Moody Blues did have other singles hits but they created a run of classic albums and that's where their heart lies. They almost invented the prog concept album, where an album was designed and track listed to be experienced from start to finish. This album was called 'Days of future passed' and each track follows the path of a day, and they continued this idea through 7 albums where songs segue into one another. It would be worth doing what you did with 'Dark side of the moon' and doing extended reactions as A and B sides of their albums. All five members of the band were credited with bringing in their own songs, which made them a very creative and varied mix. Along with the signature mellotron sound which enabled them to simulate that big orchestral sound, the flute featured regularly, and the albums also had poems written by the drummer and read by the keyboard player.
You must do the live version with full orchestra.
This is still one of my all-time favorite songs. But you must listen to the full length version to get the full effect. And there are some amazing live versions also. Tuesday Afternoon, Lovely To See You and Isn’t Life Strange are a few more to check out.
Love your reactions! This is an all time favorite of mine -I was SO happy to see you love it! The album version, as everyone has said is haunting and fabulous...as is the whole album!I used to stack Days of Future Past, Aqualung, and Led Zeppelin 4 LPs on the record player, put on the headphones and lay on my back on the brown shag carpet with headphones on and just get lost in the music. So happy to see someone experiencing these works of art for the first time! Thanks for sharing the journey with us!!
You need to listen to the live version where they are older. Yes. Little River Band is amazing. Also Jefferson Starship.
As others have said, please listen to the whole album. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. In my opinion 'Days of Future Passed" was the first true concept album. also unique, this version of the band had all five members writing and four of the five trading lead vocals. They were one of the few bands to have hit albums in three different decades.
One of my all time favorite love songs. Made out to this song many times. ❤
Tuesday Afternoon is another great song from the Moody Blues.
I was fortunate enough to see the live in Morgantown, WV in the mid-80s. They were visually as ethereal as the music sounds with blue & purple lighting swooping around pale baby spots in the same cool tones.
I believe The Moody Blues has a version of this song that's like around 8 minutes or so and that is excellent I have talked about Symphony the reason that song so long is they have a couple pretty long sections of that song that is just music instrumental music and like it says it's symphonic and a lot of Orchestra there I believe this one is a huge Orchestra and it's played I know it's plate indoors but I can't remember where but my favorite part of Nights in White Satin are the decent runs of the flute I just love how they utilize the flute in this song.
I LOVE The Moody Blues, orchestral rock/orchestral anything
You gotta do this song with the symphony backup. A most!
Moody Blues are a whole vibe!💙💙💙💙💙
At the time, there were several phrases used being used for progressive rock like Symphonic Rock, Art Rock, etc. 1967 was the year that prog rock was born with the release of 2 landmark albums; "Days of Future Past" by the Moodies and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles.
radio stations back then, would play the short version. the long version could be heard on the record album.
Several other moody blues songs that are great, Tuesday Afternoon, legend of the mind, ride my seesaw.
You REALLY need to listen to the album from start to finish. The day begins, then (Tuesday) afternoon and then nights (in White satin) the end of the day. Days of Future Passed is well worth a listen either album or better on CD only because you don't have to flip it over. Later albums get more poppie.
It's really interesting to see people reacting to the first time hearing these Mega Bands that those who grew up with them take for granted. These bands were almost background music to the children of the 1970s (graduated HS in 1981).
I actually saw them (or most of them) at an Arizona State Fair sometime in the 1990s.
I later saw Meat Loaf at the State Fair around 2010-2012 or something like that. He had lost range and needed background vocalists to make up for it but his performance still left buckets of sweat on the stage...
