Absolutely the best ever. I’m 70 and still listen to them every single day. You talk about Justin’s gutair work, the intro to You and me is amazing. First band with a concept album first with a flute first to tour with an orchestra first to sell 100,000 tickets at Madison square garden maybe even the first with four singers. What else can you say. Way underrated. A plug for the Strawbs, also underrated

Hey Larry - I've followed the Moody Blues since their beginning and have seen them live at least 12 times over the years. It would be hard for me to rate the albums because each one had a special meaning in my life and meant a lot to the changes of ME. "Lost Horizons" was one of my wedding songs; "Watching and Waiting" led us to that point! I think that most people these days don't listen to album music the same way as us older music lovers. We listened and thought about what was being said, but it seems people are too busy to "Think" and only let the stuff go by without realizing them. Case in point: "Time" by Pink Floyd when suddenly all of the reviews make them realize 10 years have gone by and they missed the starting gun! Top five groups for me!

So glad that the Magnificent Moodies finally got under your skin. I was wondering why you weren’t really a big fan of theirs considering your musical tastes. But it’s fantastic to see a new Moody Blues fan. Just so you know, the Moodies are in my top-ten bands, ever. And I’ve always been proud to say that. Once you a fan of theirs, you’re hooked for life. When I was a sophomore in high school, my uncle John told me they were one of his very favorites. I admitted that was unfamiliar with them. He said they were “classical rock” - and that notion really intrigued me. So I ordered Long Distance Voyager through the mail (on eight track, how hilarious is that) and I excitedly plugged in the player. The first song I heard was Talking Out Of Turn. Well I fell immediately in love with that song, and then of course the whole LP. To this day that song is a personal love of mine. So I secured some funds and legged it on down to the record store, and purchased 3 of their early albums on vinyl. The first I spun was In Search Of The Lost Chord - well I was good and hooked then. I also realized as I went on that I knew several of their songs after all - Tuesday Afternoon, Nights In White Satin, The Question, as well as a few others. I understand how hooked you are - it’s like finally seeing the light on something that has always been there in front of you. I enjoyed this video very much because of how serious you were about it all. You’re now in love with this band and your sort of almost overwhelmed by it. Well, welcome aboard, mate. You’re now a proud member of the Magnificent Moody Blues unofficial fan club - one that includes millions, of all ages, from all over the globe. Better late than never, Larry. I’m so happy for you.

A Top 20 band for me, there's a lot of great bands out there you know. I'd place them at #17, which is pretty good, when I have hundreds of band's albums. The Moody Blues song that always gets me emotional is Ray Thomas' "The Tide Rushes In". The way it sounds and Ray's passionate vocal. The song has a funny story. It was written about an argument with Ray's wife. And producer Tony Clarke thought the song worked out so well, he kidded Ray's wife to fight with him more. ha! For further listening, I'd recommend their 1981 album "Long Distance Voyager". That's just as great as the "core 7". And maybe a box set for the rest. Either "Time Traveller" or the 4 CD edition of "Timeless Flight". They are very similar. "A Night At Red Rocks" is good, too.

Hi CSM, Great video! I got majorly into the Moody Blues in 1978, and in my big collection now includes the box set of “In Search Of the Lost Chord” and 2 disc “On The Threshold Of a Dream,” plus Time Traveler box set, many DVDs etc. and members’ solo albums. I loved their concerts. I got the first person I dated into them and she made a long medley for me to play in my high school music class. I love their first album “The Magnificent Moodies” (or “Moody Blues #1”) and the ones after “Seventh Sojourn,” too. The Top Ten list question results of only 14% could be partially due to some viewers still loving The Moody Blues but knowing of loads and loads of bands. Some I love like Tube and Indochine don’t sing in English. (Japanese and French). Lawrence was incorrect that “Days Of Future Passed” is their first album; it’s their second. Sorry about your losing your dad; mine died 20 years ago. I have two Mike Pinder solo albums. You said the only album you hadn’t listened to of the early Moody Blues albums is “Octave.” (I love it.) Wow, so I guess you really despised their first album, since you didn’t mention it? I really like it. What do you think of the Justin Hayward and John Lodge “Blue Jays” album? I love Sparks, too. Have a super week and stay safe. :-)

Hi Larry, loved hearing your thoughts on the Moody Blues, a wonderful unique band and i agree with everything you said. A top ten band for me (Beatles and Kinks take my first two places) what can i say, truly remarkable music and atmosphere across all these 7 albums, i feel Mike Pinder started or inspired Progressive Rock with he's sound. I felt the Moodies were never quite the same after he left. The Moody Blues were never a Prog rock group but i think the elements are all there, Great songwriters and those vocal harmonies are heavenly, all of those guys were essential to the groups sound

It's strange, I'm not a huge fan now but my dad always has been and I had a period of about 6 months where they really effected me. When I was 15 and getting into high school I was getting depressed and anxious about transitioning out of early adolescence and I remember getting really into them, especially songs like "Isn't Life Strange" "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin." One time my dad and a couple of his friends went to see them at a show in Denver and I couldn't go because the venue was only for people 18 and up I believe. I was really upset about it and my dad told his friends and they bought be a Moody Blues jersey at the show with a big M and B on it. It must've cost $150+. I still have it and that was almost 20 years ago. I'll always remember that story and time in my life.

Life long Moodies fanatic here. They are my desert island band. You touch on a great point about the Core 7 albums. This band had four excellent songwriters (Drummer Graeme Edge couldn't write music but he offered up poems which are oft criticized but he did his best.) So each record you had 2 or 3 songs from each writer when they were in their prime. You had their best efforts. And a diversity of styles. I feel the late 1980s output suffered from the fact that it was mostly Hayward (and Lodge) carrying the songwriting load. The late 1980s band was really Blue Jays souped up with Yahama DX-7s and Linn drums. Anyway, how many bands had 4 out 5 members each able to write a really good song, not to mention a classic? Pinder's songs are probably least well known but "Melancholy Man" hit #1 in France and the Four Tops had a #3 hit in the UK in 1971 with his "A Simple Game". The Moodies oozed talent. Lastly, I am seeing Justin Hayward in six weeks for the umpteenth time. Nice video!

Another great aspect of the band is, like the Beatles or Eagles or Fleetwood Mac, they had so many different singers/songwriters. All 5 wrote - though Graeme Edge usually contributed poetry or an occasional instrumental- and all except Edge sang. The Mike Pinder songs are different from the Ray Thomas songs, different than the John Lodge songs, different from the Justn Hayward songs, yet all sit perfectly together in the Moodies brew of mellotron, flute, and poetry. I can be in a Pinder mood one day or a Justin mood one day, and their music works. I can't say enough good things about the Moody Blues.

    Hello Larry--
I did not partake in the poll for the MoodyBlues that you conducted,
but to you I would say do not get
too upset over the lack of top
    recognition for them from your
    audience,as they were snubbed
by the corporate R & R Hall of Fame as they were eligible for entry in 1990 but not inducted until 2018.
That in itself is a travesty,
a miscarriage of justice,if you will.
The Moody Blues were the support
band for an obscure UK quartet
in 1965,for what what would turn out to be that band's last British tour. They were called the Beatles.
    Maybe you've heard of them.
    Eric Clapton opened for the
    MoodyBlues in 1967.
He would go on to say that that was and has been one of the
    highlights of his career.
The MoodyBlues were on the first posters depicting who was going to play in Woodstock, but backed out and opted to play Paris instead
    on that same weekend.
    During work for Seventh Sojourn,,
the inhouse fighting was bad w/ group members, and so they all
approached Tony Clarke and told him they needed to seperate from each other, and cool off.
    As a result,a Lodge/Hayward lp
    was created and released.
I strongly urge you to listen to
    their Blue Jays album,from this.
Even though it's a Live album,
I also recommend you try the dbl lp
"Live at the Isle of Wight 1970".
And finally,I don't think that you have to apologise beforehand when you think that it might be a
long video.People can just stop it.
And if you're still reading this text,
It probably is taking you just as long to read this.lol
    Take care of yourself,Larry
P.S. despite what I've said here,
    I still typed this slow,because I
    know you can't read fast.

Hi Larry it is very hard to rank these albums they were very consistent in quality there isn't a weak album or song on any of them. I always considered them prog rock but really they have more in common with folk rock like Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby Stills and Nash, Cat Stevens and the Byrds. There is an other album with all original members some of the same songs played live I wouldn't recommend it the songs aren't as good as the studio versions.

I had every Moodies album on LP to Long Distance Voyager, then when The Present was released in '83, I bought it and 3 or 4 listens - that magical wonderful sound of the Magnificent Moody Blues was... gone. I gave that piece of vinyl away and never listened to the Moodies for along time. In December of 1999 I got rid of about 1/3 of my vinyl collection, about 500 albums and the Moodies were among that batch. I never replaced them on CD. I did, however, download A Question Of Balance from an unauthorized site in 2005 and burnt it to CD-R. I didn't really want to be caught at The Pirate Bay - the only thing I d'led there. Get away from the Pirate Bay.
As for seeing the Moodies live, I was not impressed, I saw them live in both Philadelphia and New York City. Not much room for improvisation, nice solos, but the Moodies don't turn me on as a good live band. Thanks for doing this great video.

Ive always considered Moody Blues to be underrated. Theyre pretty famous but its strange why they’re not considered one of the pre eminent prog/psychedelic bands (i.e. Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull etc). I mean, days of future passed is arguably the FIRST prog/concept album. Perhaps they were too “British sounding”, hence didnt get much exposure (just like the Kinks, Fairport Convention, Donovan etc)? They’re not really my Top 10 band of all time simply because there are too many bands, but they might be a Top 10 band from the 60s/early 70s.

You may be a girl, but I don't think so. Too old. And besides...if listening to the Moody Blues makes you a girl...sign me up! They had me from the start, well, after they got "Go Now" 50s crap out of their system. They had me right up through Seventh Sojourn and Blue Jays, but by then, I had, as a progressive soul, moved on to classical, jazz, avant-garde, contemporary, world, folk musics, and ethnomusicological wonders from allsorts...which is what I think Jamie Muir plays. My first altered state was with "In Search of the Lost Chord" appropriately, and I carried "To Our Children's Children's Children" with me while hitching eternity road, watching and watching for someone to understand me, hoping it wouldn't be very long. I mean a million years is a long time to wait.
