  • After negotiations between California State University management and the California Faculty Association stalled, CFA members have elected to go on a systemwide strike this week. According to a CFA release, union members offered four proposals on Jan. 8 but were met with “nothing but disdain” by CSU management. Now, tens of thousands of professors, lecturers, librarians, coaches and counselors across all 23 CSU campuses will walk off the job from Monday until Friday.

    CSU raised tuition by 6%, where is all the money going? It’s all going to admin, nothing is going to professors who do the real job.

    Our tuition has raised this year- where exactly is all this money going? Cal States are being treated more like a business & not a place for education

    The University has a 2 billion dollar savings that is being used to invest in the stock market and instead of that money being used to pay their teaching faculty and improve the life of their student's they would rather have ppl work for free and horde that money so they can keep giving them selves multi million dollar raises.

    They can't afford to raise faculty pay but administrators are the ones making bank. I thought the purpose of a university is to educate, not just fatten the wallets of the admin.

    There should be no reason that the students have to suffer through this. The professors have a responsibility to do their job. This needs to be settled through a lawsuit, not strikes.

    • @azeeze1391
      @azeeze1391 Před 3 měsíci +3

      You really think the professors have not been doing their jobs? You think they want to strike? Use of common sense. If there is a collective effort to go on strike, you know something is wrong then. Support them advocate for them. Don't ridicule them.

    • @jellybean8773
      @jellybean8773 Před 3 měsíci

      Teaching students is their “job.” What does a job mean? You do work and you get paid what you deserve. The universities have raised students’ tuition, and what have they been doing with the money? They have been just stocking up tons of money for themselves and administrators have decided to raise their OWN salary, while not giving a proper raise for faculty and staff for years despite all the crazy inflation. You need to first understand why this is happening before you call them irresponsible. Also, a strike is a legitimate way of protesting. Students shouldn’t suffer, but the blame should be on the universities, not the faculty and staff who are the victims of the exploitation.

    Are the workers being forced to work for CSU against their wills? I'm pretty certain the majority of the workers are exceeding $75k/year.

      Students tuition has also been increased this year. Where is all the money going to?

    • @patrickfuchs3859

      @@DarkPrincessOfLight I've lived well in SoCal on less than $75K. My point is that many CSU workers aren't earning less than $75k, many are earning $150k+. Additionally, they aren't bound to their jobs by shackles, at gunpoint, by rope, etc. They're free to come and go as they please. They can seek employment elsewhere that better suits their wants... if they can find it. Tuition increases cover increases in costs that don't always include employee costs. There is maintenance, projects, research, inflationary costs, etc. Just because fees go up it does not equate to higher admin wages. Admin wages are set by the state's Dept of Education. Adminstrators don't set their own wages. One reason tuition goes up is cutbacks in state funding. As costs go up, especially in a period of inflationary pressures, and funding is decreased by the state... students have higher fees. Furthermore, any new increases in business costs to CSU by meeting the picketing demands will only add to the fee burdens of students or to the taxes of Californians. Someone WILL pay because... math and economics. Higher wages equals higher individual spending equals higher pressure on goods equals higher pressure on raw materials equals more inflation at the cash register. In other words, higher wages are negated by a wage domino and inflationary effect. If somone making $20 an hour suddenly makes $23 an hour then the person who was making $23/hr now demands $26/hr to maintain a distance based on qualifications/experience. Once they're getting $26/hr the person who was already making $3 above $26 now demands $29 to maintain a $3 difference. Eventually in 12 to 18 months everyone's wage has increased, inflation due to all the new $ in the system has pushed all prices higher and the first person realizes they're no better off than at the beginning. It's economics 101.

    • @patrickfuchs3859
      @patrickfuchs3859 Před 3 měsíci

      @@DarkPrincessOfLight How many CSU employees are making well over $75k/year? Many are making multiples of $75k. Are any CSU employees shackled to their jobs? Are they free to quit? What keeps them in jobs they aren’t happy with? Not all tuition increases have to do with employee wages or benefits - not even admin wages. Admin wages are set by the Dept of Education and administrators do not set their own wages. During the last few years, the US has experienced high inflation and that equates to increased costs. Maintenance, project, supplies - all costs have gone up for CSU. Furthermore, CA has cut some funding to CSU and together that results in student fee increases. Higher wages will do nothing more than create more inflation, higher tuition, and a statewide wage increasing domino effect. If a person making $20 suddenly makes $23 then that causes the next person who was making $23 to get $26. The person who was making $26 now demands to maintain a higher wage based on skillset/experience. In about 12-18 months all wages have increased, even the burger flippers because prices have gone up everywhere. Wage increases cause inflation and over about 18 months all increases are negated. Higher wages will result in higher tuition and/or higher taxes. It’s economics 101. Magic money doesn't just appear, someone's going to cover new costs.
