6 months Learning Vietnamese || What I've learnt so far

  • I've taken Vietnamese lessons for the past 6 months and this is my progress so far. I find remembering vocabulary the most difficult part of learning Vietnamese but speaking and pronunciation is definitely up there too. How was my pronunciation?
I began learning with a company called 123 Vietnamese (123 Tieng Viet) and I 100% recommend using them. They have their own books which you learn from during the lessons with a Vietnamese teacher.
I also live in Saigon and it was quite difficult to find lessons or apps online which focus mainly on the southern Vietnamese accent, which is also why I opted for a Vietnamese teacher.
During the outbreak, I've been learning Vietnamese online with my own private tutor. There's honestly not a better time to start learning vietnamese than now.
I wish I started learning sooner because now I know a little bit, I find myself learning faster and faster.
I was going to make a video at my progress at 3 months which I regret not doing as it would be interesting to see the development. So now I will be giving updates on my learning. So expect to see a "1 year learning vietnamese" in the future.
What's the hardest part for you when learning a new language?

It may take a while :) I met a Russian girl in Hamburg Germany, who could speak Vietnamese with almost perfect Northern Vietnamese accent. When you started greeting me, i was shocked LOL. She told me she was studying Vietnamese major or something like this in her university. She also spent approximately 6 months/1 year in Ha Noi. I mean you will do it sooner or later. Keep it up! A bit difficult to pronounce i admit :v a lot of children in Vietnam get the same problems as yours when they start learning how to speak.

    Hi Eve,
I can't comment on your pronunciation. I've barely started to learn Vietnamese myself. I speak English and French, and have decided to try to learn Vietnamese because my adopted grandson is from there. He doesn't speak any Vietnamese, but perhaps some day he will take an interest.
I learned French in high school, but never considered myself bilingual until, much later, I learned to talk to my future father in law, who didn't speak a word of English.
So, to answer your question, the hardest part of learning a new language is different for me than my first time around. The hardest thing for me trying to learn Vietnamese is that it is so very different from English and French, and that I have no one to practice with.
I too am trying to learn the southern dialect (my grandson was born in Sai Gon), so I can totally relate to your difficulty in that area.
Good luck to you. From my limited standpoint, you're doing great!
