Non-Bilingual Kids: British Gal tries to Speak Dutch with her Mum. âš 1-week Language Challenge!
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 18. 05. 2020
- In this video, I'll be putting my very limited, very non-fluent Dutch to the test by speaking to my Mum and Dutch friend Esmee. đŠ Bedankt voor het kijken allemaal!
this one is for all my dual nationality kids who weren't raised bilingual. I see you. I feel you. I dare you to engage with your family's language! đ
My Mum is from Friesland and my Oma speaks limited English. A huge motivation in this is to have better conversations with her! My process, shown in my last video, was to only use free resources on the internet. I'd love to find a more structured way to commit myself over time!

What I reccomend is that your mum must ALWAYS speak to you in Dutch during the day or during basic conversation and small talk then you tend to pick it up naturally. I didnt fluently speak my mothers first language until I was 11 and this really helped when she stopped speaking to me in english all the time
That is a great one!!
definitely!
Agreed. That's the way. I used to speak Portuguese fluently when I was younger becuase my parents spoke to me and my brother in Portuguese but as they learnt english and I started school they just stopped speaking to us as much in Portuguese and I kind of unlearned it. I can read and understand it so well but I just can't speak it properly. I've been trying to force my parents to stop speaking to me in eglish

Shanaya Vanden bergh uiteraard! Nederlands is vet lastig voor non-natives
8:23 Wow she sounded SO SO dutch here when she said "Oh leuk, goed hoor". I am proudđ
Iâm native Dutch and I have to say WOW Iâm so impressed with how good your Dutch actually is after just a week!!! Keep up the good work!
What the actual HOW CAN SHE SPEAK SO WELL????
she probably heard it a lot growing up, her mom's family is from there, so than you learn it quicker, and you get the accent. but it is damn impressive how good her vocab and grammar already is
dutch is relatively easy for native english speakers since its form the same language group.. if you commit to it for one week and also hear it growing up, visiting family it really isnât all that hard to pick up
shes been learning too
Most english speakers still have a chubby accent after a week tho and it's funny hearing it, so keep on learning dud
Dutch is the second closest language to English apart from Frisian (all West-Germanic) which helps but the fact that she grew up hearing it very often must have helped a lot too
I am a Dutch girl and I'm honestly so impressed how fluent your Dutch sounds after just a single week of learning it! :)
*Jade: "Please answer slowly"*
*Esmee: reacts at 300 m/ph*

Lale Amirova same
The King ja echt hĂš
It's so much fun to watch this when you're Dutch yourself haha
Right?!
I know right hahaha
So as fluent speakers, how is she doing honestly? Because as a native English speaker who only speaks English oh, it sounds pretty damn good to me but I can also hear we're parts of it are more English than others. Her mom said that she was really hard to understand, is she really hard to understand or is it just not the best pronunciation ever?
Chelsey Abbott when her mom said she couldnât understand her I actually understood her. She is doing really well! Of course she has a strong accent but some parts are really good! I hope she keeps on learning, because she has so much potential!
@@chelsey8737 im from the Netherlands and it was not hard to understand at all. Like offcourse the way she bild the sentences wasnt Always that good. and i know you can say that about bij English too, its because im dyslectic so yeah. But she was doing really well especially because she learned it in 1 weeks time.
The fact that sheâs on a level of basic conversation in a week is pretty crazy

Esmeâs british accent is top tier btw
Yesss
Dude if I didnât know she was dutch i would have never guessed that she was. Purely based on her accent.
Charlotte Levy Nederlands ook
As a South African who's mother tongue is Afrikaans, I found this extremely entertaining, funny, and overall very wholesome. I am constantly fascinated by how similar Dutch is to Afrikaans, making them mutually comprehensible languages. I really hope you keep up your fluency!
Jade, you said a "goed hoor" so naturally. While the "hoor" is famously hard to translate. Although it's clear you're not a native speaker, your really sound like you get the gist!
I think itâs really funny how your mums dutch starts sounding more âEnglishâ during the conversation because I feel like a lot of dutch people do this when speaking to someone whose first language isnât dutch but tries to speak dutch. I am dutch myself but when I speak to someone whoâs trying to learn Dutch I find myself adapting to their pronounciation instead of speaking proper dutch đ
Yeah apart from pronunciation I also really associate with changing word order to make it easier for non-natives to understand. It's a terrible Dutch habit because my expat friends always complain they're unable to properly learn Dutch because of us.

Oscar Gr Oh no definetly its just she couldnt speak any yet which makes it even more impressive
I actually never get why a parent wouldn't pass down their own language
@Mike yea absolutely and not just that, it's great for the kid later on, no matter the language
Well itâs not like a physical object or an heirloom that you can easily just pass down to someoneđ
I agree
my dad didn't pass down german to me or my sister because he was afraid it'd be too confusing but I really wish he had because I've been trying to learn german for the past few years and I'm still struggling lol
It's not always that easy! I have never learnt German from my mum and I have never been able to learn it, it feels like my mind blocks it out or something. I was born in Italy and lived there until I was 3, in that period my mum tried to teach me German, but I always cried when she did that. Then we moved to Spain and, as I had two new languages to learn (Spanish and Catalan), she just dropped German...
Sheâs so good at this!
Ze is hier zo goed in!
Super goed Jade! Ga zo door!
Heel leuk om te zien.
Itâs so weird going to countries like Switzerland, we in England generally only can speak English but in Switzerland they can speak 4!
Yessss! And Belgium! So much respect đ
@@UnJadedJade I'm half swiss and I noticed that dutch sounds so much like swiss german đ
which languages do they speak? I know they speak french and german. right?
Yes! I moved from Germany to Switzerland a few years ago, and went from knowing German and a bit of English to knowing German, English, French, Italian and Latin (you are required to take at least two 'national' languages at school for multiple years). Sadly, they're changing the curriculum in grammar schools so as to give mathematics and natural sciences more lesson time, and (myself included) not all students always appreciate learning about, say, the intricacies of French grammar.I still hope that the idiosyncratic linguistic set-up in Switzerland won't disappear altogether, it's kind of cool that things like food labels, our government's website etc. are all in various languages.
UnJaded Jade In Belgium we learn Dutch, English, French and German
Your mum looks so proud at your attempt to learn Dutch! This is such a cute interaction!

As a native Dutch speaker, I just want to say that your Dutch is amazing, Jade!
Haha, Iâm from Groningen and Itâs so cool to see someone learn Dutch. Not a lot of people do, since Itâs not considered a beautiful language by many. Usually French and Spanish are way more popular, which I understand because they are really nice languages and Dutch is not really a relevant nor âbeautifulâ language lol. Itâs really cool to see you connect with this part of your identity! And in just one week you made an incredible progress. Keep up with this work, and you will be able to have full conversations with you momđ Btw: I can confirm that your mother still sounds like a native, especially considering she has lived longer in England than in the Netherlands!

i studied dutch at undergrad here in the UK and then did my masters in amsterdam and what I found most helpful for my language was when I got a cafe job to support myself alongside uni! while i was at work i had to switch between english and dutch all day and it did wonders for my more conversational language skills. i definitely recommend trying to immerse yourself in the language at least once a day - even just having it in the background is so helpful in the long term! itâs been 5 and a half years since i started learning dutch and youtube is still one of my go-tos for listening practice (i like disfordazzleâs vlogs). your spoken dutch is already so good and you clearly have great comprehension skills too! keep it up, veel succes! đłđ± lđ

Wow, after just one week your Dutch is amazing!!! And reacting to your mum feeling self-conscious about her Dutch skills, I'd say she's still got it! Fun fact: Your mama has got a very English accent when she talks Dutch but also still has got that Fries dialect going on.
Your next challenge should be the Fries language if you want a real challenge.

Fries is actually closer to English and therefor easier to learn for native English speakers. It's actually one of the easiest languages to learn for them! (You can fact check this, it's true)

Also depending on which part of the country!
