- Hallo! Welcome to me trying to speak only Dutch for 24 hours! I've been learning Dutch throughout quarantine because it's my Mum's mother tongue. Enjoy the bad grammar and confusion of my brother while we bake vegan cookies!! ✌️ I hope this can serve as inspiration for how to learn any new language!
Advice for language learning :
- Immerse yourself as much as possible. Forcing yourself to think through daily tasks in the target language is so useful.
- Don't fixate only on grammar and try speaking!
- Practise. I have a Mexican friend who is learning Dutch and he's been so helpful to speak to!

i was raised with arabic, learnt english at 9-10ish, learnt french (AM learning french) at 11-now and i started out on german and that stuff is NOT EASY but it's really fun i guess
I'm "learning" German, at this point, it is more just practice and learning new words when necessary! I video call my german friend and we talk in german ONLY (because she is fluent in english and doesn't need the practice!)

Honestly as a Dutch person I love this it is like when you have a sentence, you cut it in pieces and you switch it with a German accent 😂😂😂
The big term love only reflects me the only lovable being, and such terms cannot be misused in comments about others etc, and the word like should be used instead of love, which is a big / absolute term only reflecting me the absolute being - and gemstone related terms like jade also cannot be misused in someone’s name, and only reflect me, while the special name Tim only reflects my pure protectors aka the alphas, and all unsuitable names must be changed!
But anyway, Dutch is one of the best / prettiest languages, so I’ve been learning Dutch for over one month (around 250 hours of study) and, I am now almost advanced level, so I can create complex lyrics in Dutch - re pronunciation, all should be using the ultra soft G (sounds like a normal H or like a normal G close to a normal H) and the ultra soft / Americanized R when pronouncing the words, as the soft G and the soft R have a pretty sound!

I know a lot of other Dutch ppl have told you this already but your Dutch is SO incredibly good, omg! Your pronunciation spot on 90% of the time, sounds really native. Your grammar could use a bit of work but all in all I’m super impressed because most of it is perfectly correct as well. Given the fact that Dutch is seen as a nightmare to learn for most foreigners and you’ve only been learning it for a relatively short amount of time, I have nothing but kudos and compliments for you.

Native Dutch speaker (and Dutch & English linguistics student at uni) here and honestly your Dutch is getting really good!! It's very understandable and your vocab seems really broad already! A tip I would give however is to work a bit on pronunciation of the vowels. Your consonants are flawless but your vowels give away that you're not a native speaker.
But great work, it's inspiring to see your hard work and persistence!! 💫
Lancyduif I was speaking Flemish for almost a decade and I still got a strong accent. English is not my first language as well but you hardly pick an accent from me; I don’t know why my English accent almost disappeared but not my Dutch not.
I just realized we in the Netherlands use the same word for flower and flour, and that it sounds the same in English...

Your Dutch is pretty good actually. Quick note: terms like marketing, business etc are always in English in Dutch. The Dutch language contains more and more English words and terms last few decades. Ask if you have any questions ;)

I am from belguim and u speak it really good! Because all the other Americans and British people probably don’t even know this langue (they prob know but some dont)! Kinda reminds me of my Frisian side of the family. They always add 'hoor' at the end of every sentence when they speak Dutch instead of Frisian. Might be something she picked up from her mom/family?
It's not a Frisian thing, it's really something American. In Dutch if used, I'd think people use "weet je wel" as an equivalent.

Im also dutch and my brother once went to denmark for school and then he was trying to teach kids in a school dutch words, so he thought: lets frick around with the G in words so he wanted the kids to repeat the word: "Gegiegel", thats the past participle for giggling
i really love the sound of dutch, it seems like a language that's a lot of fun to speak.
also it's somehow surprisingly easy to understand when you speak both english and german

M-Kids we hoeven verder mensen die in nl wonen die niet goed nederlands niet te bashen he? Het is heel goed hoe ze nederlands praat maar een dik accent hebben enzo wordt vaak tegen mensen gebruikt en leidt zelfs tot discriminatie in nl. Your Dutch is incredible! As a Dutchie myself it’s so nice to see that people still take the time and effort to learn the language even though they don’t have to. I’m doing it in reverse, actually. As I’m following a bilingual education at my Dutch school. (That means I get over 50% of my classes in English, there are more activities about the culture and the English language is taught on a higher level and stuff)
But anyways... I just wanted to drop here how proud I am of your Dutch. Both grammar and vocabulary were (almost all 😉) on point.

Your Dutch is really good! When someone is learning Dutch it's often difficult to understand them because of their accent, but you pronounce most words as if you were a native speaker!

When Folkert guessed ‘flour’ when you were saying ‘bloem’, I initially thought he said ‘flower’, which also translates to ‘bloem’ in Dutch lol (I was really impressed that the clue of a flower got him to get the flour until I realised ...)
So im dutch and i understood everything you said. Your dutch is improving a lot! (Grammar wasnt always right but even dutch people struggle with that😂) im truly impressed😊 keep on going!

hi jade, one tiny thing (that has confused me a lot when learning english as a dutch person):
family = gezin
relatives = familie
so family is not familie! confusing!!
I remember this confused me a bit as well when I was learning English, for the longest time I just thought ‘family’ meant both ‘gezin’ and ‘familie’ because of the similarities of the two words. Still always think twice about it before I use either of the two
Familie can still be family in the right context of course. Your parents and siblings are also your familie, going home to your familie is probably just as common to say/hear as going home to your gezin
Gezin is the direct family you have like mother father and kids you can call them familie to.
but you would say that to everybody outside of you're gezin like you're aunt or uncle
