- Why are all superhero costumes SO basic? Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman… they’re just so BORING with one or two colors each. But is there a reason for that? Actually, yes!

I’d argue that the primary colors are what makes them pop more
Though they aren’t actually wearing primary colours (apart from the yellow)
The primary colours are Magenta, Cyan and yellow. You actually aren’t able to mix the whole colour spectrum with Red and blue. But yes it is close enough to have a similar effect.
The saturation level is really high which helps them pop and red, blue and yellow have an array of colours and shades that compliment them well or contrast them well, giving you lost of options for colour palettes while at the same time making over all colour page composition easier on yourself.
The colors are to iconic to change the original
@@claracatlady9844 red yellow and blue are the primary colors for subtractive or pigmented colors, which is what most people are familiar with, but you're right that for printing and additive/light primaries it's magenta, cyan, yellow

It's like designing a coat of arms or a logo. It has to be relatively simple, unique, memorable and instantly recognizable.
Yea, Spiderman is prob the single most recognizable super hero to date. The red-blue colors and the webbing pattern is super iconic and he actually looks kinda like a spider
Coats of arms are not instantly recognizable though sadly

Spider-Man's outfit is way too iconic to be "upgraded". It symbolizes Spider-Man and when you look at it, it reminds you of an inspiring superhero.
There are some good redesigns here and there, but there’s a reason why Spider-Man’s design has barely changed in over 60 years

We'll miss ya matpat
I'ma miss mat
Me too
I have to disagree here. Those bright colors may be "basic" but it's also what drew kids to the superheroes (something modern superhero creators need to remember). It makes them look more heroic, like they'll be there to help you and they're your friend while being the villain's foe. It's more hopeful. I'd rather not see them lose that even though modern printing allows for a bit more nuance in those colors and that could be integrated. They're iconic designs for a reason.
I was about to comment about that. As an artist, there an art to simply. And simple, bright palettes are a great, easy way to show off who good. Look at other “for kids” stuff. Pokemon, Kirby, My little Pony FiM, Sailor Moon, Power Rangers. The simple designs and colors are appealing, and it get kids eager to draw them.
@@catherinebaldwin6580 Exactly. When it comes to kids designs making them something kids can draw is important because it helps them connect. MatPat has discussed color theory before and I'm sure it will come up on Style Theory quite a bit, but choosing colors, even in stuff for older audiences, is important in superhero design.
You know what's interesting? Do you think this bc it's true, or bc you grow up with this so you associate these colors with these thoughts and emotions?
There is certainly color theory at play, but also a significant part of it is psychology 🤔
I've seen a quote from the internet saying "if a child can't draw the character from memory, then it's a bad design"
I think he made the argument based on the fact that the artists of the time were limited to their technology - and didn't base it on any other reasoning. I don't think he actually made any attempt to look at the color theory or marketability. Just the technology. You can't argue with him, because he doesn't have a point.
It may be old, but it’s too iconic to upgrade
this should have been on style theory
Wasn't created yet, but it should be reposted
Honestly the primary colors is what makes spider-mans og suit so iconic/nostalgic
Personally, I'd say Spidey doesn't need an upgrade. He has the best suit and design out of all the superheroes, no need to improve upon perfection!
You are correct. Over design can be a problem.

They do get different suits all the time, those suits and color schemes are just iconic
It definitely also follows the need for your characters to be instantly recognizable. If you saw a green pixel on top of a purple pixel and someone asked “who is this character?” you would know it’s Hulk Edit: or Green Goblin yes

iconic designs, you could recognize them by the silhouette.
Colors were decided based on what was cheapest at the time
That’s what happened in the ‘90s, and they gave Superman a mullet!
As a designer i seriously appreciate the correct use of CMYK as the primary colors for printing. Idk why but most people seem to get it wrong, saying its red blue and yellow, even though that's neither RGB or CMYK
Red Yellow Blue is for Color Theory
CYMK is for absorbance, like pigments and printing
RGB is for light, like screens
All of the primaries are in color theory (CMYK RGB and RBY) Red blue and yellow are called "painters primaries" because for most of history those were the 3 paints that were readily available and could be mixed to create most colors
Primary colors aren't interchangeable between print/Paint/ light
As a person who has ideas for superhero characters, I find it pretty hard to find colors that would make them iconic and pop
The Hulk was turned green due to a printing error, not because it was easier
Funny coming from a man known for his brightly colored leather jackets
I want a style theory of what the ideal iron man suit would look like, with lift, speed, and mcu Tony's preferences accounted for (similar style to that smash or pass pokemon)
Ideally, it would be greys and blues so that villains don't see him coming. But since you mention his MCU preferences... it would look like it does in the movies since, you know, in Iron Man the second suit he makes he deliberately chooses the colors of his suit. Based on his personality he chooses "Hot Rod Red" because it's the "fast" color and gold because, duh, gold = rich.
MatPat is the kinda guy to say “tradition is just our ancestors peer pressuring us”

My theory is that the loop in these shorts is an alternate matpat set to eternally debate about the same theory
And here I thought that this short is uploaded in Style Theory. 😂😂
I like them, they are simple but iconic
You also missed the Stan Lee Convention. Heroic characters in blue and red, villainous characters in green and purple. With Hulk breaking the convention as an anti hero, and somewhat of a monster.
That was hands down the cleanest loop i've ever seen, and nobody's talking about it.

I'd argue they don't need to be changed now or in the future. You can always create new looks but the classic will always be prime.

I refuse to acknowledge that the Hulk, a literal embodiment of anger and rage, needs drip.

I feel like that is saying Mario needs an outfit change for the next game, sure it is simple and based on limitations they had, but is so iconic and fitting, changing it too much would feel wrong
Ok but when he made it just one color and gray they looked sick
Matpat telling us these facts that we never know before 😁
The Japanese: I had no such weakness
The whole point is that the costume needs to be simple and original so it's memorable, making them too complex or adding to much to a hero suit specially if the character is new and or not known will only make it hard for people to remember the character
Id love to see a theory on how much of a seamstress spiderman is. Also how much time and money he actually has to spend fixing or replacing his costume. Like, those suites are no joke. They are complex
Someone needs a lesson on how to pallet a character. Don’t change this! Look at every other bright and cheerful worlds. Pokemon, Kirby, Sailor Moon… Wait… I’m talking to MatPat… He wants everything dark and terrible.
Matt Pat is your typical average MCU fan. Doesn't know anything about style and coloring and wants to change something iconic just because for the sake of it
It's always the printers man. First they refuse to work, then when they do they tell you you can only use certain colors.
Also almost all of Spider-Man’s villains are originally green to contrast his red.
The Phantom (The Ghost Who Walks) originally wore a grey costume however after a printing mess up his costume was turned purple and it’s remains that way ever since. That, at least, is the story I read.
How I see it, similar how to Silent Hill 1 predicament with hardware limitations on PlayStation 1 brought life the wonderful mechanic of using a dense fog to give reason why you can't see farther than a few meters, the limited colors that the artists had to create their superheroes, comics and artworks back then made their creations pop out more. It made them more memorable because their colors are bright, solid and vivid. Easy to recognize, remember and kids can draw their favorite heroes with the same limited set of crayons they have in a box of 16-color Crayola.
NO NO NO THEIR SUITS ARE PERFECT
He’s got a point though
@@metroidotherm6170no he doesn't
The reason that they’re still using primary colours is actually because primary colours are considered as “heroic colours” or the “good-guy colours” while secondary colours like green or purple are considered as darker and more evil. That’s a reason why Hulk’s design is so interesting as well.
Spiderman has a great taste of fashion
Love your vids and good short
Disagree, I’ve so many complain when the movie costumes become too unnecessarily complex. Less is more, but not to the point of being bland like trying to give an entire team the same outfit. Designs need a blend of simplicity but individuality.
Theres also a thing about color theory and how primary colors are more heroic while secondary colors are reserved for the villainous or anti heroes like Hulk.
Love how he captures his viewers into the script that he exposes with interesting words.
Oh, you're showing yourself now!😧 Ok cool😀 Interesting video, thank you for the information.👍

An actually decent loop, great job MatPat!
even the new superheros stick with alot of these colors. i guess they just stick when it comes to color pallet, it does make it more memorable
Neat
This for style theory, or film?
Are we gonna talk about how the video perfectly loops in the middle of Mat’s sentence?
It used to confuse me so much when I was younger reading the old Spiderman comics because the sky would still be blue at night so I just assumed all of his crime fighting was during the day
Goodbye matpat we wont forget you😢
the primary colors are fire and go hard though
i like your dedication to properly looping all your shorts.
There’s also the theory that primary colors seem more “good”. It’s why many villains wear secondary colors like green purple and orange. Though maybe that was partially because we’ve been reading those comics for so long. But yeah if a hero is meant to be seen as suspicious or dangerous they may have a secondary color to them (like Hulk’s green) and there’s not too many iconic villains using those primary colors. If it was just about printing the villains would also be primary colors.
Imagine working with scraps and creating some of pop culture's most iconic looks
Good to know printers were always an adversary
I love how these are always in wn awesome loop
If any older superheros were upgraded like batman or hulk or wonderwomen like the iconic heros id be sad bc you know youll never see them again if they stick with the upgrade
Its actually costume design 101. Colors aside, the primary focus of superheroes is to be memorable to kids (used to be at least) so a good design was simple and able to be drawn from memory easily
He showed one of my favorite artists artwork for a relatively new Batman comic A1
Don’t forget that primary colors are very memorable and good for marketing purposes
I would say that it is a "don't fix it if its not broken" with the old stuff. Just give the new stuff the innovation and experimentation because they need it more
Love how u can watch these shorts on loop
