      When I was a kid like forever ago a friend of mine had this Isuzu mark I it was about the ugliest 💩tiest car I had ever seen but it got like 45-55 miles per gallon. When ever we went on road trips we always went in his car we could get from our subdivision in Diamondhead Mississippi to 6 flags Houston on like half a tank of diesel and it was like 89c a gallon. I wonder what’s better for the environment a car or truck that gets better fuel economy or what ever this new bullshit is you can’t possibly tell me we couldn’t have trucks going 45-55 MPG by now if they just kept focusing on mpg instead of environmental crap.

Given that GM and Isuzu worked together on these motors , I was pretty sure that this would be the most reliable diesel you can buy. Seen and reading on forums how many trucks have issues and for how much you have to pay for one of these trucks these days, ,,, Is completely unacceptable for these truck to crap out like this at under 500 k miles.

      Nothing. Eventually the DPF will clog up and need to be cleaned or replaced. Typically ash is what clogs a DPF up because the soot burns off in regen. The ash does not and will eventually fill up the filter.

    Shouldn't the truck throw any check engine codes when the exhaust system is clogging up? usually the computer also knows when these filters are clogging and overheats the exhaust to burn the soot before even throwing any codes. Also isn't the EGR's job to recirculate this extra soot to make sure the engine burns it so it doesn't clog the filters? Did you find anything else wrong? because just replacing the exhaust filters will only be temporary fix, the problem will come back, won't it?

    That much soot accumulation, in a short life, was there any power adding modules installed on the truck? Something like a derringer or edge pulsar? Something is creating more soot than normal on this truck, and I’m not so sure that stock programming and power would create that much soot, that fast that it can’t regen itself on a regular basis.

      Yes - thanks for a very informative video. I especially like the explanation of how everything is related to the next/previous component in the system.
      I'm not sure if you know ... how many engine idle hours did this engine have? Let me do some math here - when I divide this truck's hours (which I see when I open my truck door) into the 100k miles I'm gonna guess I get a number close to 20 on THIS truck. In my guess of hours I came to approximately 5000. If this truck were just driven more, instead of idling at that coffee shop or construction site, it might only have 3000 - 3500 hours (according to the calculations that are from the GM L5P bulletin I read everywhere).
      So is the solution just to drive more miles on the highway for many hours at a time? Thanks

      Biggest thing that stops up a DPF filter is high idle time , short distance driving and poor filter service . Get yourself a banks idash or and Edge Insight to keep an eye on the DPF soot load and regen status. That $300-$400 expense can go a long way to making sure you allow regens to complete and keeping your DPF burned out. My 2017 just rolled up on 750,000 km and still ran like a top until about a month ago and started staying in Re Gen and wont stop showing the " keep driving" message. It kept going into limp mode especially towing my 45 foot toy hauler. After the first 2 hours in ReGen it really started pumping out the coal for 10 minutes and it went through about 7 stages of this and every time it started blowing out the coal the power got better and better then it went from feeling like a 450 HP truck to a 200 HP truck. Pulled the MAP sensor and it was solid black sludge - cleaned it and no difference. Now I have to unplug the MAF sensor to get anywhere and still goes into limp once in a while. Have to keep my reader plugged in to clear limp mode to keep going. KInda stuck because at work for another month and very limited to no shop support way up north and still have to make the 1300km drive home with this trailer when im due for days off. Its got the DEF treatment all the time, never threw codes before last month. What can I do to this thing - to either clean the entire system out or hack some shit off to keep me going until I hit civilization?

      Just as a note: Banks only replaces the last three and a half feet of the exhaust pipe.. so it does not affect sound. And their only claim is that it reduces EGT..
      I have their 5” Monster (wanted a side exhaust, mostly to keep the front of my trailer from melting during regen) it deletes the cone/cooler from the tip and uses increased pipe volume/ diameter, to reduce the velocity and temp at the tip.. I did not notice any difference in backpressure.. I think the DPF is likely the biggest restriction on these trucks when Stock

    • @POINTBLANKPERFORMANCE
      @POINTBLANKPERFORMANCE  Před 3 lety

      Def only purpose is to lower the (NoX) in the exhaust or dissolve as some put it. The filters captures the large particulate (soot) the def helps dissolve it and when you drive your diesel these particulates get “burnt out” through the system . The worst thing for the filters are idle time , poor air filter , stop and go driving . They designed the system in my opinion to be driven rather than what most of the time happens of stop go all the time.

    I have a '20 Sierra 2500 Diesel Denali with 55k on the meter, bought it used couple months ago. Currently broke down with it and our RV states away from where we live. Cannot get a service appointment anywhere around us at a GMC dealer. They're telling me could be weeks to look at or fix. WTF!!! I've got extended warranty on top of factory warranty, Onstar full subscription w/Roadside Assistance and they won't tow our RV, just the truck. Anyway, the truck is running so rough the engine is shaking the entire truck. When it first started happening I was on the highway with cruise at 65mph, felt like the axle on the trailer came apart or locked up or blew a tire because the vibration became extreme. But then realized it was the engine running rough. Another thing I noticed is that the truck started going through DEF really fast. I got a message that I had 999 miles left and then 15 minutes later it said 222 miles left. Also, once I parked the truck the gauge said I had half a tank of DEF but my phone's app was giving me a low DEF alert. So I looked it over, the hose clamp on the black box on top that says "Duramax" was loose. I thought maybe it was sucking air there and that was the cause, so I tightened the clamp and took the truck for a drive without the RV. It was still doing the shaking/vibrating, so I thought maybe the DEF DPF regen was clogged up or something, so I ran the shit out of it (first time ever getting on this truck and wow is it fast for as big as it is), sooo that sort of seemed to help, but now even at idle the truck goes from running perfectly smooth for about 5 seconds to running rough and shaking the entire truck for 5 seconds and back and forth. Any ideas anyone? I have no clue about diesels, this being my first and the GMC garages are bending me over.

      @@POINTBLANKPERFORMANCE This is likely a big contributor.. emissions controlled diesels that never get run hard enough to regenerate properly, clog the DPF so fast.. this is a HUGE problem with all those Sprinter Vans made after 2006 and All the Ford Transits with a diesel as well.. they idle while getting loaded and soot up.. then they rarely run down a highway where exhaust volume is high enough to clear the whole filter.. When the DEF gets injected at low engine speeds it doesn’t fully clear the soot off the DPF… you need to run them down the highway.. The Banks Derringer with the monitor allows you to force a regen cycle.. I do it while running down the highway… it also shows the pressure differential between before and after on the DPF.. so you can tell whether the regen was effective or not.

      The filter on this truck could have gotten stopped up for many reasons . To much idle time , dirty air filter , poor injector atomization and so on. The filters get “cleaned” by highway driving or a regen . If they are to far gone like this truck and more exhaust gases are going out the air filter then the entire system is replaced.
