I always thought OG Makarov looked a bit messy in a good way. He gave off a sinister vibe, like he's not someone you wanna meet. Current Makarov just looks funny all things considered. He looks too "clean", with a bit of a baby face for someone who's meant to be the head of a terrorist organisation. I can't take him seriously. And the Ben memes aren't helping matters.

Funny thing, the original MW2 even managed to make the abrupt death that Bricky is talking about here narrativley satisfying. Remember the original Ghost? No drawn out cutscene, no rescue mission, just shot by Shepherd and he was gone. It was such a jarring, sudden death and it still felt 100x more impactful than Soaps death did in the new MW3, because it was woven into the story.

For anyone wanting answers regarding what happened with this game, the Bloomberg article on it is a great place to start. If you want a tl;dr, Activision forced this project onto Sledgehammer with only 16 months to make it. And forced a full story reboot with about a year or less of that dev time left. On top of the fact they originally pitched the entire project to Sledgehammer as a DLC, not a full game. What Activision did here is honestly probably worthy of a criminal investigation, the way they treated their own employees, in spite of mountains of promises that they wouldn’t after the hell that was Vanguard’s development.

    • @PhoenicopterusR
      @PhoenicopterusR Před 6 měsíci +349

Honestly, kudos to Sledgehammer for even delivering on something with that much bullshit behind it. They deserve so much better than being under Activision's thumb.

Activisions entire existence for years and years has been a walking legal crisis. Even during the golden age of Cod there was some shady stuff going on in that company, hell even before Cod Activision was notorious for being a shiity publisher to work under. If you want a pre-cod example of this look into Vampire The Masquarade Bloodlines development. There's also the whole Cod on steam thing that we can get into but god damn that's another rabbit hole that needs to be talked about more.
And that was all just the Activision side of things, the Blizzard side has their own entire set of issues. I would not be surprised if in the nearish future Activision-Blizzard is involved in a massive media lawsuit. I say nearish since I don't think it'll happen in the next 1-3 years, but it will eventually happen.

Activision is notorious for treating everyone under them in a downright abusive fashion. The way they treat their staff is utterly appalling, and they're only getting worse. They have no regard for anyone or anything except quick profit. Not helped by the fact that people keep buying their stuff, thus proving their philosophy right. I honestly believe that one of the best things that can happen to the games industry at this point is for Activision to crash and burn under the weight of a million lawsuits, because until they - and other studios like them - are held accountable, this isn't getting any better

Shepard: Killed in a post credit scene and you don't even get to pull the trigger in.
That's it that's the game. Makarov is incompetent, TF141 has plot armor until they are forced to be stupid so they can die, Shepard and Graves don't get punished for being traitors and lie under oath, Shepard is killed off screen by Price so he'll probably come back even after we saw his head on the desk "dead." 16:50 Here’s a small tidbit about passenger airplane doors: they’re designed so you need to swing them both inwards and outwards before opening. For example, if the plane door opens outwards like in the game, you need to pull the door inwards by an inch or two before it’ll let you open it outwards. It’s a safety mechanism so you can’t open the door unless the outside atmosphere and inside atmosphere are roughly equal.
Let’s say you want to open it anyway at an altitude of 30,000 feet. Well… air pressure outside is ~4 psi and air pressure in the cabin is ~12 psi. For a… let’s say a 5 foot by 3 foot door… that’s 8.64 tons of pressure you must overcome to open that door. So Makarov must never skip arm day.

This game is simply Activision's latest experiment to see how little they actually need to do to technically call something a full-priced game. Absolutely everyone knew this was an MW2:2:2022 DLC, their main marketing gimmick was a LACK of any original maps ffs. And you know what, this was still a bestseller. The COD fanbase only has themselves to blame at this point. Activision was as clear as they possibly could be that this was going to be a cash grab devoid of any artistic integrity or effort.

I would like to point out that a realistic death scene doesn't even have to be fast. There are tragic realistic deaths where someone just bleeds out while a medic is trying everything to save them as the others can only watch, one that comes to mind is Jamie Smith's death in Black Hawk Down but there are a bunch of other examples. And if it really has to be an impactful quick death, another example I have is Act of Valor, a NAVY Seal lays on a grenade to save his bros in that one... or everyone that just gets shot in Tears of the Sun. They really didn't even try to find a way to make Soap's death scene impactful.

Random idea but if they wanted to do things more "realistic" how come its only the three SAS operatives at Soap's funeral? Did the guy not have parents? siblings? a partner? It would have been a real tonal juxtaposition to cut from a spec ops mission gone wrong to the guys all in civilian dress at an uncomfortably ordinary wake or even Gaz and Price having to show up a quiet english suburb and break the news to soaps mum and dad. Different way of making a soldiers death sting than in the original but id say it could be as effective if done right.

So while do you need a plastic 3D printed gun when you already brought on the plane a backpack full of explosive and dozens of parachute pack? And why the specific member? Wouldn't it be easier to find a diehard ULF, trick them into thinking suicide bombing the plane be a better thing? And the fact that Farah and 141 even come to crashsite, kill dozens of Konni men and wipe the blackbox, wouldn't that equivalent to handing Makarov a propaganda victory that he can spin? • @ladywaffle2210
      @ladywaffle2210 Před 6 měsíci +5

There can be narrative weight to a sudden death, too--it plays up how unfair the world is.
Think of Kat, from Halo: Reach. Her death comes out of absolutely nowhere. You're mid-cutscene, thinking you're safe. You're heading for a bunker to escape the glassing of New Alexandria, but you're going to make it, because you're Spartans that survived far worse. Jorge's death was built-up and made sense; he had a warrior's send-off and he accepted it. Right as you close in on safety--BAM! Kat dies to a Jackal Sniper with a Beam Rifle.
And it hurts! It really does! Noble already lost one good soldier, and now the funny, sarcastic tech girl is gone. Noble feels quieter without her. Hollow, almost.
Alternatively, in the Hunger Games--Prim dying. She's killed in a bombing attack; she's working as a paramedic, and she and Katniss have been separated for a while. Katniss finally finds her again, and starts heading towards her--and then a secondary detonation kills her. It's sudden, but it carries such narrative weight--Katniss volunteered as Tribute specifically to avoid Prim being killed in the Games, and she dies anyway. She was always going to die. Her name was pulled.
Sudden deaths can be good--especially if you're given time to stew afterwards, to meditate on how unfair it was. *Especially* if the character in question either A) survived so much, just to die so quickly, or B) wasn't supposed to die because they were somehow protected.

You know what is an old but really good example of a sudden, ""realistic"" death?
    Kat's death from Halo Reach
Right on the heels of Jorge's big noble sacrifice to blow up a supercarrier you have the pelican flying mission. then at the very end when they are looking out over the city Kat delivers one of the best lines in a game full of great lines: "I know we're losing, i want to know if we've lost." Then a general makes the boneheaded move to call noble team on an unsecured line, which is pointed out by the team. He try's to give them orders but a covenant glassing interferes with the radio. The emp from the glassing knocks out the Spartans energy shields and while they are hoofing it out of the city Kat gets fucking DOMED by a Jackal sniper. Keep in mind Jorge died 1 mission ago and he had a whole speech about how this is a one way trip and he aint coming back. So while you now know "yeah Spartans can die, and they probably will" you get expectations set for what that looks like, and when it will happen. One mission later Kat dies in the middle of her sentence, not to an elite, not to some horde of enemies, not making a noble sacrifice, she dies to a fucking JACKAL SNIPER, under circumstances that are no fault of her own, and the foreshadowing happens one minute earlier in the cutscene. There is no "KAAAAT" its just Noble team fires back at the sniper and drags her in the bunker. And the fucking cherry on top is the reaction we get does not come from the Spartans. Our audience stand in is the fucking civilian's in the bunker who have never seen a spartan die. And they are just as shocked as we are even though we've seen it before.

I do love how that is executed, no pun intended, she gets interrupted in the middle of her sentence as you said, no last words, no meaningful looks no nothing, and the other spartans don't comment on it, but you can see through their actions how much they care, the fact that they fire back at the ship with weapons they know damn well won't do anything to it, that scene was in the trailer and i remember people making fun of noble six shooting at a ship with a pistol, but in context it makes 100% sense, it is more out of anger than anything, not to mention how they make sure to bring her body to the bunker even though that slows them down and means they almost don't make it.
Reach had a lot of deaths, but i think kat's was my favourite, it was painfully realistic, there one moment, gone in the next, no noble sacrifice, no monologue or quip, but it was still given proper emphasis through the music and the other spartans.

      A few things to note:
It wasn't a general, it was Colonel Holland.
She doesn't get domed by a jackal sniper, but an Elite Zealot, more specifically, the leader of the Zealot squad that you encounter at the end of Winter Contingency, and later kill after Emile dies (but before you get into the MAC Cannon).
The civilian reaction has subtitles, but no voiced dialogue, personally I'm not sure if that was a deliberate artistic choice or an error on Bungie's behalf, but it's probably the former.
All in all, you are 100% correct in it being a very good example of a realistic death, and Jorge's previous heroic death making it hit twice as hard.

This is from someone who was watching your video while chatting on Discord who allowed me to share it:
Imagine Ghost goes under such heartbreak, he started thinking non-stop about that mission until He realizes Soap death could have been avoided if Price didn't stop him from killing Markov, that fact alone generates a lot of resentment against Price then he decides to go fulll vigilante and leaves the 141, making his priority killing Markov all by himself.
MW4 campaign is about the Task force 141 constantly trying to stop Markov and other related terrorists on top of having Ghost as a rival who always it's 2 steps ahead of them, then let's say Markov is in a position that he shouldn't be killed (He has hostages or something like that), then everything goes to shit (all the hostages even Gaz dies) cause Ghost interrupts a delicate situation and captures Markov, torturing and killing him.
At the End, the final mission would be 1v1 between Price and Ghost, letting the player chose a side with different endings.

I can think of 2 main reasons why that scene works and this one doesn’t:
      (1) It’s a betrayal in MW2, not an established villain killing someone. Obviously we all know that Shepard is the villain nowadays, but at the time, it was legitimately shocking.
      (2) Shepard's betrayal isn’t the end of MW2, it’s a turning point in the story. You immediately deal with the fallout of his actions. Here, Soap gets shot and that’s it. Wanna find out what happens next? Too bad, you have to wait another year (at least) for a game that’ll probably be equally terrible.

I mean they’re both Russian, it’s not unlikely that they would’ve ran into each other purely out of coincidence.

A few more things to nitpick.
Ghost calls the gas as Sarin. Sarin is colorless but is shown green here. Sarin is a neurotoxin so you'd lose control over your body once you inhale Sarin within just a few minutes. Also, Sarin is potent so it sticks to to clothes and things so you'll need decontamination.
The chemical missiles hit Arklov base which most likely hit the top of the base. The missiles didn't cause any physical destruction (for some reason) but what's weird is that the gas emerges from the bottom levels instead of the top.
Samara received messages on her phone on the flight while it was airborne, which shouldn't be possible because of no cell service.
It's interesting that the plane crash site has nicely furnished houses around it with intact furnishings. Even the phones and the black box were in good condition.
Calling an AC-130 on a covert FOB which has chemical weapons is never a good idea. Keep in mind that ULF has a decent land army (seen in MW2 2022) which they could have used here. Makarov showing up on a Chopper in a base which has 'potential' chemical weapons is weirdly unsafe for him.

I find it really cool that during inspect animations reveal red markings on your clothes in operation 627, which vaguely hints that you could be konni but it still isn't enough to really know for sure.

Call of Duty MW campaigns were about linear cinematic set pieces with tons of actions and wild scenarios mixed with stealth grounded missions. This one feels like a multiplayer lobby with cutscenes.

Imagine lowering the bar in a franchise where the bar has always been at rock-bottom most of the time

Wouldn't say that. It was actually rather high till bo2. After that it started to get kind of shakey and hit with vanguard rock bottom. And it has been trying to recover but failing miserably, somehow digging even lower in the earth.

@@the_seer_0421 I think within the realm of cod games yeah the ones fan deem as the 'classics' are better but even back then COD was already seen as a blight on the gaming industry. Like remember people were already making fun of it with stuff like Duty Calls back in 2011.
In some ways it's like Transformers fans in 2023 being nostalgic about the Bayformers movies and wishing it would go back to the original trilogy even though back then it was looked at as the laughing stock of hollywood.

I’m not gonna lie… the way you was talking about Ghost going rogue, would be a perfect plot for a COD Ghosts (remake)

Soap’s death in this was really bad, and the funeral was even worse, but the worst part about it is that it didn’t have to be that cliche. The funeral would’ve been a million times better if they took after the original MW3 and used the SAS clock tower in Hereford from Price’s speech. It would’ve been so much better if they went there to put Soap’s name on the clock tower or something.

Did anyone else notice one of Makarov's big (few) character traits was he was constantly talking about planning? Like he was a person that had conceived of every detail and planned for every eventually and we would constantly be playing 1 step behind... And then that didn't happen at all, like sure he had a plan he was enacting, but we are constantly dismantling it and removing resources of his off the board, even the end where he gets away seems pretty clear it wasn't part of his plan, and Soap could have just as easily one that fight and killed him right there, Mak never feels like he's holding all the cards at any point in the campaign.

Right?! It's like shits just happening around Makarov, he instantly takes the credit for it, and everyone else immediately believes him; no questions asked. It's either that or he's just a Terrorism Wizard who makes stuff happen once he's had the chance to monologue enough.

Just bad writing unfortunately. The writers wanted a cunning character, so they just told you he's cunning but did not show it in his actions. Just like when a writer tries to write an intelligent character, while he himself is not.

Which is funny because the original Makarov pretty much was the opposite. Outside of Shepard basically forcing him to ground in MW2 (which he then immediately sells him out to Price and gets Shepard killed), he's always ahead and has the main characters on the backfoot. Like there was an entire multinational special forces task force made to hunt him and by the end of MW3 only one of those operators is confirmed to be alive. Like when he monologues its when he's pretty secured (end of No Russian when he's sparking a war, when he abducts the Russian President in MW3) or when he's patching in and not in any danger (Talking with Price in the boneyard or taunting Price and Yuri in MW# before he kills Soap).

It's a narrative trick to make the antagonist seem smarter than he is. "oh this operation was stopped by the heroes but AKSHULLY IT WAS THE PLAN ALL ALONG"

The best way I could sum up this campaign: Wasted Potential.
The return of one of the most prolific villains in CoD, it was supposed to be the big finale, instead we got a story that could’ve been decent, but was too focused on rushing itself to completion.
    Sad really.

The thing that gets me at the beginning of the game when price gets the call about makarov escaping they should’ve been at the base or at a bar instead of going on a mission which could have been important!
