    One thing I’m surprised that Bricky didn’t mention is that no members of the game plays it relatively safe in terms of stakes. By the end of the game, the main roster is Ghost, Gaz, Soap, Price, and Laswell. You can also include Rudolfo,Alejandro and Farah in that. The thing that made Shepherd’s betrayal so affecting in the original MW2 wasn’t that he was revealed to have ulterior motives, it was that he killed Ghost, and ostensibly, you. In nearly every cod game, especially the Modern Warfares, characters die to show how the stakes are elevating which ultimately makes each conclusion have more tension. In this game, the stakes never really feel that high because nobody really feels like they’re in any danger. Nothing reenforces how deadly these missions are because nobody fails at anything.

    • @MrPenfold666
      @MrPenfold666 Před rokem +58

      I think they're saving that for 3, because IIRC ghost and soap were only introduced in this game, I'm 2019 you played as price and gaz. So introducing these iconic characters only to kill them off in the same game would be a disservice.

    In regards to the Russians listening to Shadow's comms, something that is taught for radio etiquette is never saying actual names like "John" or "Bill" and only using callsigns like Warrior 2-6 or Husky 1-2. Same with mission objectives/updates, instead of saying "we've passed the hill" or "we've passed checkpoint 2" you'd say "Checkpoint Steel" or simply "Steel" therefore if enemies are listening on comms they wont know your exact progress in your route.

      yeah. the thing to love about Arma 3 though is that the lack of music is uncanny in a good way. it's unsettling and the silence is deafening. you feel like at any moment something wrong can happen, and anybody who doesn't feel the same is gonna feel rocked if it does. whereas in CoD you're the pursuer and it feels so anticlimactic to have all this silence. it makes the chase feel dull.

    • @PJ-kv7oq
      @PJ-kv7oq Před rokem +29

      I agree, the silence on an Arma convoy run is so unnerving. I remember an op we did that was basically all driving for the first 45 minutes and everyone was so tense and expecting an ambush around every turn, every couple of minutes someone would say "Was that an engine I just heard?" or "Can anyone else hear rotors to our left?", the sheer stress was insane and when the trouble did show up it was almost a relief.
      I've done vehicle interdictions and chases in Arma too and something I found that set those apart from the MW22 chase was the sheer amount of chatter going on, even with a unit that has pretty tight comms discipline. I was the only medic role so I was on everyone's comms (12 people, 2 squad channels + the command/CAS net) and EVERYONE was talking, not even counting off-radio chatter, true chaos. The Arma chase lasted about a minute, went exactly as planned, and had my heart pumping. The MW22 chase went on for far longer and felt a bit dull after the initial spectacle wore off.

      I always thought atmospheric games like Frostpunk would make for really great TV. Funding might be an issue but with art software as accessible as it is now there's no reason to not start. The Saw franchise was born from a ten minute short film which served as the blueprint for the feature film. Couple film buffs in the area, a decent camera, some special effects in Blender and you'd have something pretty neat. You don't even need that much snow and stuff, just alot of implication through interior storytelling. Take "Bioshock Short Film - The Interrogation of Timmy H" for instance. They took a very small part of the game and recreated it in a single room with a couple guys and props.

    Bricky, if you listen to the chatter for both missions where its present, you really get a feel about the thought they put into it as well.
    it starts with pristine US army comms. everyone follows radio etiquette, its proper US army terminology and usage.
    by the end, its melted down to random soldiers picking up radios of their superior to inform command that their companies are reduced to 3 man teams, with the appropriate decrease in communication quality.
    even if most people dont understand the terms used (such as Echo 4 Sierra), they understand through the voice acting and context that the situation is beyond dire.
    MW2 (2009) does an excellent job at portraying a losing side's communications and overall aesthetic. for 2 whole missions you're hit with low after low; first you evacuate washington DC, then you get EMP'd and are all alone, in a city full of russians.
    it may be nostalgia speaking, but the DC missions are some of the most well made in cod history imo. they induce feelings so organically, on a level that no other mission has done. and the radio chatter, which you barely hear, is all part of that.

      MW2 009 had a lot of things going for it at the time now that I think about it - the unexpected popularity of MW, Hans Zimmers name on the cover, and extremely large advertising(for a game of its time) from what I remember. That coupled with the lesser need to cater games to younger generations like today made it have far better storytelling, even if the plot was far more ridiculous if people want to nitpick each of them. Slowly realising that the market of popular games is slowly marketing itself towards younger and younger people is pretty sad to see, even if there are far better games today.

    Yes. And that’s why I didn’t buy it.

    Honestly, I absolutely hate the No Russian text message at the end, not least of all because it perpetuates the stupid meaning that the community took from that line. It didn’t mean “no russians”, “kill all Russians” or anything like that. It meant “don’t speak Russian” hence him saying it after the other guy said something in Russian! Because they were posing as Americans! It makes no damn sense in the context of the new game, it’s pure fan service and it’s just blegh

      Yea that shit was stupid they just rely on nostalgia and bringing back old character to get ppl to drool over the game

    Speaking of radio and tone, Black Mesa also did a fantastic job with this. The HECU radio feels real, like it's real soldiers just trying to survive a deteriorating situation, and the emergency broadcasts you can hear periodically over radios give that feeling that the Black Mesa event wasn't confined to the facility, it affected EVERYTHING. Feels like you're in the middle of a real disaster.

    the graves name tag color swap: it needed to be done at some point, otherwise it would be silly for the rest of the game for graves to be blue. if it needed to happen, then at that moment was a great time for it. it means whatever coder was paying attention. :)

    I'm right now training to be a communications specialist in the Army, and i can say that there is some really good stuff in the old MW2's radio chatter. It's far from perfect. No one over or outs at the end of their transmissions, which is a really important thing. Saying repeat is absolutely not ok, and i have no idea why some random grunt can not only listen into all the chatter going to their HQ, but is also for some reason on the same net as the damn helo pilots.
    But for all that the speed, pace and tone of the chatter is very well done, the static and radio effects very convincing, if perhaps a little less severe than reality, and the actual chatter i could very nearly believe from could come from an active warzone. All in all, 7/10. decently done, definitely some of the better stuff out there.

    i still love that the shadow company betrayal only happens to cover up the answer to a question that Ghost asked once at the beginning of the game and then was never asked again by anyone. I mean, really it just happens because it happened in the original game but yknow

    As strangely realistic as the military coverup of a botched weapons deal is, the level of incompetence displayed (including the USE OF REAL NAMES ON COMMS) makes me think that the US government would have figured out Shephard's plot eventually anyway.

    Hey don’t worry, they brought Graves back in the most recent season, and explain it away with “oh yeah that wasn’t me in the tank” as if it makes any sense at all.

    the only thing i liked about this game was when captain price said "We're ghost squad, from Call of Duty: Ghosts, coming 2013 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC"
