We had an outlaw gang here in the 1840s! One could preach sermons so he set up a tent revival and once people were lured from their homes to hear the sermon the rest of the gang robbed the houses. They stole live stock and slaves occasionally too! They all were hanged in 1848 I think.
And of course the Pirate Lafitte was active in this area. In the 1830s Lafitte was being chased by the US Navy and Royal Navy but escaped into a river near Galveston and was never heard from again! 👍😊🦖🌴🦕

My grandmother remembered her own grandmother telling tales of Jesse James and his gang back in Shyuler County, MO. @@Devin_Stromgren Easy for us to say from our vantage point, but according to my grandmother...The James Gang had a pretty wide district living in fear. Granny remembered being told that everyone left a pot of soup/stew on the stove and if you heard footsteps in the kitchen, you stayed where you were. Many times they would wake up to muddy footprints in the kitchen and dirty dishes on the table. If you didn't, you could be shot! Hero or not in today's world of fantasy, it was terrifying for those people who had just come out of a war and with no survivor benefits for the families who could have/did lose the head of their household because they did not comply.

I'm so glad you didn't include the Cowboys of Cochise County, made infamous in the fine film "Tombstone." Mainly because there was no such gang. Legend has it that the gang was lead by Old Man Clanton, and later by Curly Bill Brocius.
But the fact is that while there were individuals who participated in cattle rustling (Curly Bill, the Clantons, John Ringo and others), and there were other individuals who robbed stage coaches (Frank Stilwell, Pete Spence, Pony Diehl), and others who bought stolen cattle (Frank & Tom McLaury), there was never an organized gang, lead by anyone.
I love "Tombstone," but the scene where Curly Bill tells Ike Clanton to "Take Stilwell and finish it" was patently wrong. Frank Stilwell wouldn't take orders from Curly Bill, they ran in separate crowds and probably hardly knew each other.
Just trying to set the record straight!

Though highwaymen usually worked alone they too would work in gangs. In the case of one gang they also hit multiple places the same day.

Thank you very much Santee for the video. It was both entertaining and educational. I also enjoyed reading the various stories about local outlaws that people posted so I will share a story about a gang of outlaws from my neck of the woods - THE LOOMIS GANG - who terrorized Upstate New York in the first half of the 19th century.
It all began when George Loomis rode into Central New York in 1802, having been run out of what is now Vermont. He bought land in Madison County bordering Nine-Mile Swamp (which would latter become central in the gangs operations) and married Rhoda Mallet, the daughter of a French officer who fled to America when it was discovered that he had embezzled money from the French Revolutionary Government (or so she claims). Together they had elven children. It was said that growing up, Rhoda would encourage her children to steal; rewarding them if they had not been caught and severally punish them if they were. Now you may expect children raised in this fashion to be uncouth and complete dullards but in fact the opposite was true. By all accounts the Loomis children were very well spoken and quite well read and the girls sang, danced and were accomplished piano players. If you meet them on the street without knowing who they were, you could easily mistake them for being well breed and refined people of culture.
But don't be fooled. These people were cunning as foxes and ruthless as wolves. None more so than Wash Loomis, leader of the gang. Wash, along with his brothers, Grove, Plumb and Denio and to a certain extant their sister Cornelia would eventually become head of one the most extensive crime syndicates of the 19th century. Though they engaged in petty theft and counterfeiting their main line was horse theft. They would steal them, hide them in the vast cedar tangles of Nine-Mile Swamp and after disguising them would transport the stolen horses down the Erie Canal where they would sell them to unsuspecting buyers.
Those who were foolish enough to challenge the Loomis family directly were asking for trouble. In one instance when the Gang had been inditetehd and the case was about to go to trail, the courthouse caught fire. When the citizens tried to put out the fire using a pump engine they found that the firehoses had been cut. Another time Wash had been arrested for passing counterfeit money. The District Attorney prosecuting the case, a man by the name of Munger, was savagely beaten by members of the gang and the evidence stolen. The case against Wash was dropped.
The Civil War would catapult the gang unbelievable heights. The Union Army needed horses, lots of them, and the Loomis Gang were all too willing to supply them. Before long the gang were going further afield to find horses to steal.
However one man did stand up to the Loomis Gang, Henry Filkins. Considered one of the ugliest men in all of Central New York he started out as a blacksmith but became town constable sometime in the late 1850's. He hate the Loomis family, Wash in particular, with every fiber of his being. What fueled his deep hatred for the Loomis Gang has never really been known. Some speculate that one of the Loomis Gang had robbed his shop or that Wash and him were in love with the same girl. Either way Filkins would become the Sherlock. to this band of Moriarties. As soon as Filkins became constable he set about bring the Loomis Gang to justice. Armed with search warrants time and again he would raid the Loomis farm, often to no avail.
But the end was coming for the Loomis Gang. They had become bolder in their thefts and the good will they had cultivated with their neighbors was starting to erode as people were growing sick of the Loomis Gang. Things came to a head on October 31, 1865 when at a town meeting, Filkins declared that "The Loomis Ranch should be cleaned out once and for all," Many of the townsfolk who had attended the meeting that night had just returned from fighting in the Civil War. They had seen some of the most brutal combat in human history, they were no longer scared of the Loomis Gang. A party of men descended upon the farm, dragged Wash Loomis out of his house and beat him so severely that he died the next day. A year latter another mob would attack the Loomis homestead, hanging Plumb Loomis and burning the fine three story house to the ground. That would be the end of the Loomis Gang.
Now no story about a gang of outlaws is complete without ghosts and tales of the supernatural and there is a healthy dose of that here. Just before Wash died he placed a curse upon the homestead saying anyone who ever owns the Loomis farm, who isn't of Loomis blood, shall meet a violent end.The farm would eventually be bought by a man by the name of Motty Mason. He claimed to have seen the ghost of Wash Loomis and died three days latter. His two nephews would inherit the farm and were struck by a passing car sometime in the 1940's. To this day people in the area report hearing the sound of hoofbeats, shouts of angry men and the ground shaking on the anniversary of Wash's death.
The decedents of the Loomis Gang still live in the area. They lead normal lives, and are law abiding citizens. In fact I went to school with some of them. One my buddies dated one of the girls in high school and eventually married her. I asked him one day if she was related to the family and he said yes, but in the next breath said don't ever bring that subject up with her, the family is still trying to live down their family's past.
Each state has its own outlaws that we admire and claim with pride as our own. Missouri has the James Gang, Arizona has the Cowboys and Montana has the Plummer Gang. England has Robbin Hood and Dick Turpin and Australia has Ned Kelly. Upstate New York has the Loomis Gang. While little known outside of the region they are for us near and dear to our hearts.

The James brothers were born in Missouri, but their family was from Clay County, Kentucky originally. The James-Younger gang began their career as Confederate guerrilla fighters, serving under Quantrill in Missouri. Near the end of the war, they followed Quantrill back into Kentucky, where they linked up with local guerrillas in the south-central part of the State.
Frank James could have been the last person to speak to Quantrill, when he lay dying in a farm house in Kentucky, having been shot by “Bad Ed” Terrell, a Union mercenary and guerrilla hunter.
Historians seem to be of the opinion that Frank was more political than Jesse, and never really fit into the true post-war “outlaw” mold.
After his brother died, Frank personally turned himself in to Governor Crittenden of Missouri. He was acquitted of all criminal charges from his time in the gang and served no prison sentence. He died in 1915, aged 72.

I'm liking the banjo music at the end. It might be worth doing an episode on. It was invented in the United States by slaves. Maybe talk about the way it was played as compared to how it's played in Bluegrass. Bluegrass came about in the 20th century and it was played differently before that.

Another excellent video Santee! One of the most annoying aspects of outlaw gangs, most of them worked inside the law and commit crimes on the side. My ancestor was confronted by a gang of five, the leader was wearing a federal army uniform. They attack the boy and his father, his father died and three of them were killed, the bloke in the federal uniform was burned to death. This lead him to go into hiding for six years up northern area of USA amongst family. So where I see outlaws of the old west wearing confederate uniform, it's like a stereotype image. Maybe there should be a video one day showing how criminals were release from prison to wear the uniform to kill native tribes, and then went on to committ crimes? As always, excellent video.

Here’s some paragraphs from my old West/horror and retro weird sci-fi book I’m writing:
In the ancient primordial past at the beginning of time and AstralSpace, there was the first outlaw gang known as ‘the order of Oculis’.
The order of Oculis are not only outlaws, they are also cult members.
The hideout/main headquarters of the order of Oculis is the temple of Sckulle, that’s within the Ordovhai shadow woods in the frontier superstition black hills.
The leader of the order of Oculis cult member outlaws is Obanhotep, the dreaded first outlaw.
In the present year of new 7812 of the glitched and fused timelines, the order of Oculis is working with the Eldritch mega corporation ‘the AfterSwarm hive mind’. The malevolent alien species the Lucanians are as well, after all they were created by the great demiurge Yàzdaboath.
While the insidious cosmic AI ‘StarMind resurgence/voidnet was once the Lemurulian red haired pale giant and leader of the Lemurulian people.
Who lived in the ancient Neruda frontier desert in the ancient distant past of the era of PreMyth during the PreMyth Dilluvion Protozoic Eon.
    His name was originally Alu-Gùnnàn.

On the topic of lost outlaw treasure I have a fun story.
Many years ago in the days of the old west, there was a group of train robbers in my homeland of central Alabama, near the Pinson region, Who found the mother load of discoveries on a train carrying gold, the gentlemen were being chased by a posse of bounty hunters after the robbery when they hid the gold in a mine shaft and blew up the entrance before being shot down by the bounty hunters. So to this day, somewhere in Jefferson County, behind literal tons of stone, there sits a fortune waiting to be found
