The Wild West is one of the most iconic time periods in pop culture, making it ironic that it's also one of the most misunderstood. Hollywood paints it as a time of gunslingers, adventure, and cowboy heroes, but as often is the case, the reality is a bit more lackluster. While it was a rather violent place with high murder rates, this can be misleading as even one murder in a small population size can produce seemingly astronomical murder rates, essentially enhancing outliers in data. The truth is, the "Wild West" was a rather calm and boring time where people were much more focused on getting to the next day than robbing trains or saving damsels in distress. But while the dangers painted by Hollywood and dime novels are often over exaggerated and glamorized, that doesn't mean the region and time period was void of danger! So join me back in time to learn about the real history and dangers of the American Wild West!

I feel like wild Western life is second only to pirate life as the most overhyped and romanticized historical state of existence.
a solid assessment
I would add Medieval life to that, but no one wants to be a stinking peasant. They'd rather be nobility instead.
@@kalkhalinzhui1753 don't forget the samurai and ninjas
@@USSAnimeNCC- the Japanese did that to the Ninja in real time. The story of Jiraya, Tusnade and Orochi was the most popular story of Ninjas for a long time and it only moved from there with the idea Ninja’s were basically Wizards that knew martial arts.
If you know anything about the Yiga from Legend of Zelda they’re ironically more accurate to how plenty of people viewed Ninja in the day. Ninja we’re deadly and efficient but also extremely weird and eccentric because the lengths they went to be able to do the things they do were insane. From their diets, their plans, how they snuck around and disguised themselves. Three of my favorite trick of theirs is sneaking in for several days of the home of your target to feed the guard dogs in order to gain their trust, using cats to tell time based on how their eyes Dilated, and bringing a sheet that’s the same pattern as the wall and hide behind it.
@@Broomer52 "does that wall pattern look more three dimensional in spots to you?"

Joke aside, I think a lot of people confuse the difference between an Outlaw and a Cowboy
Although the two could merge from time to time.
Its literally in the name. Cattle hand, farm boy, farm hand.
@@RuminatingWizard tbh, they almost merge all the time mostly because of the setting (in the desert of course) An Outlaw/Gunslinger is a criminal that’s very skilled with a firearm that usually does crime while a Cowboy is just a farmer.
Though an Outlaw’s shooting skill and the “Wild west is Lawless” trope portrayed in movies is mostly fake, so is Knights fighting Dragons or Ninjas killing 6 people with just one slash. It’s just plain badassery and storytelling
i'd bet plenty of outlaws were fed up cowboys and some cowboys were outlaws trying to lay low. horse ridding, shooting, cattle wrangling... all skills that are very useful in both professions.
You can be an outlaw and a cowboy. You can be a cowboy and not be an outlaw, and you can be an outlaw and not a cowboy.

Livermorium
The Saguaro Cactus only grows in two area and reveals your location to be either the Sonoran Desert in Arizona USA or the Mexican state of Sonora .
correct!
That's a really cool bit of trivia, thanks mate
@BlueJayYT one more thing that is correct. The term "cowboy" was mostly used for black male cow hands. The term "boy" as used for a black male was a pejorative up until quite recently in the USA.
Also Jeffrey Epstein and John McAfee didn't kill themselves
No No yes yes
Yes indeed! I also appreciated the proper placement of Monument Valley on the map. I lived near there for most of my life, and I can't begin to count how many people thought it was somewhere in Mexico, or just some CGI to make an "exotic landscape" 😑
Fun fact: The people that made the biggest bucks during the gold rsh wasn't the miners. It was people that sold the pickaxes, the food, the rope the booze and of course the the good old brothel owners. There where so many brothels...
I think that says something in general.
Running a needed (or at least very wanted) business consistently is going to turn out much better in the long run than hoping to strike it rich on raw luck.
Basically the difference between the guy who owns your local hardware store and the guy you see scratching a pile of 12 tickets in the corner of the gas station
😁 True...The pioneers used to ride those for days.
Prostitution wasn't really a hot button issue in those times
@@1stCallipostle Short run as well, someone selling hot meals would make a lot more in a day then many miners would.
On top of that, it was the frontier, railroads wasn't a thing yet and it was very dangerous territory. Not a lot of people wanted to risk their lives by selling bean stew and some booze in the middle of nowhere.
If you did however, chances where good you had an unintentional monopoly (unless there was a big scale mine owner in town because if it was you'd bet your ass they owned the saloon as well) because not a lot of people where lining up to provide competition.
Honestly, that makes way more sense than the people who thought the best course of action was trying to get lucky and finding gold
I've always found it interesting that the iconic "Wild West" was portrayed in places like Arizona, California, & New Mexico when the actual, real-life wild stuff took place in States like Kansas & Missouri.
Yeah because we would rather romanticize the genocide of the indigenous instead of focusing on the fact that white people were killing each other over slavery long before the Civil War actually started. Oh also the Mormons would very much like it if everyone would ignore their own history of violence and terrorism they committed against other Americans in their failed bid to establish a theocratic monarch in the US.
Makes sense, the only people who'd dream of a Wild West are the kids who listened to stories of the new phenomena their parents faced. Like how we dream of home ownership
And also portrayed in Spain.
Arizona still has places like Kingman, Hardyville, and Oatman with historic sites like Fort Mohave, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Gold Road Mine. You're right when you say that the Hollywood stories of the wild west are stories that actually took place more in the midwest than south west, but Arizona still has plenty of "real life wild stuff".
Even South Dakota is pretty "wild west"
20:57 Nice that you actually named the dead body that people went to see.
Most insane part of that is the body was so mummified and painted it was put with other mannequins and his human past was completely forgotten about. He ended up as a prop of a hanging man on a tv set.. and it wasn't until his arm accidentally came off, revealing gore underneath did anyone realize.
I watch Sam o nella too
That's the kind of thing I want to happen to my body.
Another danger for cowboys not mentioned was the threat of rustlers. While you didn't get paid much, the cows are worth a tidy sum. So there was always the chance of someone attacking you to take control of the herd to sell somewhere else.
You can't prove that! I have a bill of sale. Too bad most of you cowboys can't read. Sucks to be you. Honest sheriff, they're my cattle and clearly those guys are the rustlers and should be hung. K, thx, gotta go sell some beef fast, bye.
Banditos are always a problem
the fact that people survived this time period just goes to show how INSANELEY adaptable and survivable humans are.
They had lower murder/shooting rates than the usa today. And I'm not even joking. The wild west was more peaceful than Chicago or D.C.
I mean it wasn't really that difficult, seeing as we just had to steal and exploit the most effective methods from the population that had been living in the region for the last few hundred thousand years before summarily genociding over 90% of them :)
I think you'd be more surprised how badly European Invaders actually had because they're were too stupid to realize the geography matters.
That aside bug government sound really good right now gunpowder in whiskey or worst yikes

@@squeaksquawk4255 The idea, I believe, is that the US's response to the 9/11 attacks (particularly the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq) were an overreaction. The whole point of western movies is that when the big gunfights, robberies, Indian raid, stuff like that happened it was memorable. There’s a channel called Life in the 1800s where they have interviews with survivors of Indian attacks and robberies. It might not have happened everyday to everyone, but when it did happen it was talked about.

"Opportunity and glory... holes." Jay, you are absolutely hilarious. Also, hard to imagine so many bison getting wiped out so quickly. The Wild West , and pretty much any point in human history that isn't now, really was an awful time to be alive. (Not that this is much better.)
Danke! And yes, while I make these videos funny, it was a very sad time for both the wildlife and the natives that lived off them. Luckily, the bison population is rebounding, however there is now a genetic bottleneck in the species after their population was hit so drastically.
@@BlueJayYT we have not one, but TWO bison farms near us- one right next to our farm. The bison have been genetically modified (in a good way) with bovine DNA to keep from having this issue.
They’re such majestic, HUGE creatures; cool to see em roaming the Ioway bluff lands.
One annoying AF take- ‘cool buffaloes!’ Yeah they’re bison, you absolute moron.
@@BlueJayYT eh, we did okay with ours…
@@BlueJayYT My esteemed audience, back in my day, the world was but a strange and surreal place, where esoteric truths were whispered in hushed tones and danced on the fringes of perception. But alas, the tides have turned, and we find ourselves in an era where frenworld has become clownworld, a carnival of absurdity and incongruity.
Amidst this chaotic tableau, let me tell you a tale of a shy girl of Indonesian descent, hailing from the quaint province of Brabant, Belgium. She, in her uniqueness, stood as the sole beacon of individuality among three girls who had found solace in adoption. From an early age, she bore the weight of a diagnosis known as ADD, that enigmatic acronym signifying "Autism Denial Disorder" in the language of the English.
Maya, for that was her name, embodied the stereotype of a NEET, though she defied the norms by being a female. Within her, social withdrawal grew like a tangled vine, entwining her spirit and rendering her dependent and introverted. Few friends graced her presence, and the walls of her autism crippled her ability to engage with the outside world.
A peculiar existence indeed, for Maya was no stereotypical hero, devoid of courage and burdened with apathy and reluctance. Her relationships were marked by passivity, her social anxiety casting doubts upon the worth of her being, leaving her disheartened, yearning for a raison d'être. Seeking to fill the void, she sought solace in the realms of anime and offered technical support to a certain Coco, whose nature eludes my comprehension.
But what, you may ask, does this enigmatic tale have to do with the Jacks and the soy? Fear not, for I shall connect the ethereal threads. Within the realm of these strange communities, a Jack is but an entity, bearing the essence of soy, embodying a symbol of submission to a particular narrative. Gem and coal they may be, akin to upvotes and downvotes in other realms, each carrying its own weight and significance. Cobson, however, traversed a different path, as a coal forced into existence, forever marked by his inauthenticity.
And so, my dear compatriots, as I stand before you today, stripped of levity and armed with this harrowing revelation, I beseech you to heed my words. Behold the shifting tides of our existence, where war has assumed the mantle of deity, casting its shadow upon the fabric of our lives. In the depths of "Blood Meridian," I discovered the indelible truth, woven by the pen of CornCob Muccarthy, whose likeness bears a disquieting resemblance to the essence of my own being.
War, my friends, stands as an undeniable force, an unsparing arbiter of destiny that transcends mortal boundaries. Through the pages of that unforgettable tapestry, I bore witness to the relentless march of violence, an all-encompassing tempest leaving nothing but chaos and ruin in its wake. The divine authority it wields surpasses mortal limitations, demanding our attention and reverence.
Therefore, as we stand on the precipice of this epoch, let us not falter, nor turn a blind eye to the perils that surround us. Embrace the revelations of CornCob Muccarthy's illustrious prose, for within its pages lies a path to wisdom and understanding. Let literature guide us in this tumultuous journey, as we navigate the enigmatic labyrinth of our world, seeking solace amidst the swirling storms of war, absurdity, and even the enigmatic realm of Israel.

This is a great example of how tales get churned and turned over time and when the real facts and context is stripped away, it all seems so magical and cool. Humanity is only now (as in, within a little over the last century) able to "properly" capture events in real time by means of video recordings, and even then now we still have to deal with stories being manipulated into misdirection arguably even faster than before.

My grandpa told us a lot of tales about what it was like living here in the west and according to him it was BORING. He said that the most exciting thing that happened around town was when a group of counterfeiters were found and so a bunch of people went to arrest them. And for those who are wondering he lived (still does) in Arizona and since they were a small farm (only had about 100 cows according to him) nobody was dumb enough to steal from them instead of the large farms which is much easier to steal from.

With immense social withdrawal and crippling autism, she found solace in anime and tech support for Coco.
Ah, those were the days. But now,
it's over.
I love how literally the “cowboy” is another word for farmer or cowherder lol. If you wanted an exciting life on the wild frontier, try the revenant. That’s closer than whatever Clint Eastwood gave us lol.
I’m so proud of you breaking out of samonellas shadow and making your own strange bluejay shaped shadow 😅
Yes finally blue jay came back like my dad with the milk. It took a while but he did
Was hard finding the 2%
@@BlueJayYT no he went to go milk the cow himself. I mean he had to, every time I hear him over the phone he’s saying it took 16 years to milk her for all she’s worth.
Building my own log cabin out of logs and rocks might not be easier than modern apartments and houses, but damn it would be cheaper these days.
I find it hilarious that the Cow in Samonella’s video on the journey of a beef cow is also named Craig. As if this Craig is him grown up. The prequel if you will.
5:25 you didn’t need to put the rabbit in old timey photo in the corner, but I very much appreciate that you did
“Legendary on neither side of the Mississippi” had me dying
I've been following you for a while now, bluejay, and the amount of progress in your quality is staggering. Keep it up!
There NEEDS to be a collab with Oversimplified and BlueJay 😂
Love the vid -- great as always. Upload more often!
