The Many Lives of a New York City Doorman | The New Yorker Documentary - Hudba
This is the lobby of my doctor’s office. I’ve seen the doorman many times and he’s always lovely but never knew these sides of him. It’s a lesson for all of us to take the time and get to know one another. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS STORY ❤️💕
This is the lobby of my doctors office too! I've never seen him when i've gone though :( i'd love to hear him play.
Yes you can find out interesting stories. Omar do you make time to get to know people? When was the last time you spoke to a total stranger?
Well said.
@Eugene Henderson what on earth is the matter with you? You sound like a madman.
@@jogillett8518 He must have deleted his comment🤷🏽♀️ I wanted to know what he said after reading your comment.
Violinist, trilingual, family man, stays in touch with his Haitian roots, kind, art connoisseur, charismatic. He. Is. Dynamic.
Totally what a hero
Yet he suffers an extreme amount like the rest of us. Though we shouldn’t talk about it, obviously that makes it worse for us all.
Just polyglot: English, french, creole, spanish
Trilingual lol *facepalm*
no narrator's voice to guide us through what he does, who he is, and his background- let him literally do the talking, throughout his day, and show you.
wonderful
He’s simply a multifaceted and compassionate guy, and this video shows there’s more to your typical NYC doorman than what meets the eye ❤️
literal breath of fresh air.
@@ktdj93 It's more about there's more to people, not just doormen, than what we see. I'm just glad that the management and residents allow him to have his violin out at the concierge desk.
The measure of a man is how he treats the children. great man.
@@vince7735 I'm sure that attracts tenants, to the building.
That transition between Spanish to French without missing a beat in the same shot was an amazing piece of cinema.
GoGetta49 I believe he actually transitions to Creole 💕
Haiti and DR make up Hispaniola
do you have the timestamp?
Most peoplebof African decent outside of U.S. can speak more than one language including local dialects and colonial influence🤔👍😷
@@alexayangie 8:13
Very admirable that he still makes time for his family even with 3 jobs.
Also, a multi-talented person working as a doorman is the most New York thing ever.
Well probably being a door finance his other ventures too.
Most doorman live very diverse multi faceted lives outside the building...but the average person does not take any interest in going past their daily greetings.
Truth!
@@JenQuigley1 I don't think you understood her comment.
He is a smart man. Have you seen what he does? And what he says?
And his priority is to make time for what he loves, his family.
"I don't reflect misery in my paintings"
so much respect. we've seen enough misery used to downplay the beauty of foreign lands
I know he is BRILLIANT! I loved his discussion.
new york city 101: always respect the doorman.
Exactly 🎯
If this was a different world this man could be anything he wanted. Art dealer, concert violinist, interpreter, fund raiser, teacher, ambassador.
I agree however I think this man's life has more than most anyone. Money be damned!
He is rolled up into a magnificent human 🌷
I think you are missing the point. He already is all these things you listed. Believe me, this man is much richer than the rich people he greets everyday - his life is a testament to that.
Christian money be damned? Imagine what his hometown could be if he had money..... Smdh y’all don’t get it.. you want to help others? You need the finances to build schools and pay teachers LIKE HE SAID
@@alexiscolby9415 Yes he already is all these things Farisa listed.
This should be getting Emmys or Oscars...absolutely extraordinary human being and wonderful captured. A man who sits in the intersection of the privileged whites on NYC and underclass Haitians who lack the simplest of resources. Extraordinary man and life.
underclass? They're not underclass smh
Raphaelle Lazarre - They didn’t have shoes.
@@chicnoir29 I can see that...
Privileged whites? With what? Time for their kids? Involved with arts? Living a more beautiful live?
He is living the live they should dream off!
Underclass 🙄the words we use to describe human beings smh
I can't exactly put my finger on why, but that was really powerful.
It’s powerful because we are looking at a man who does so much in his life so well. And we struggle to get so little done.
Impressive!!
It’s the fly on the wall cinematography for me.
This man knows his true power, aligns with his universal source, becoming all that he is. He is a master of his soul. That's why it feels so powerful
@@jlewis122 He is struggling. It's not about not to struggle, it's about not giving it up. 🙂 But very impressive indeed. A wonderful struggle.
And don't forget to add loving father to his resume.
He is beyond rich, in culture, talents, and philanthropy. Thank you for sharing his story and may someone stumble upon him and his foundation 🇭🇹🙌🏾✊🏾
Merci!
@@yvesdeshommes4782 vous êtes les bienvenus🙏🏾✨
@@mjlight that’s is so nice of you !
Certainly!
Next time my friends makes fun of me for always cooking sardine, ima say it has Vitamin E, Omega-3, Vitamin B, and Protein... Take that! 😂
PS: Language art is part of school curriculum in Haiti (not just an elective). Both my mom and dad speak about 5 languages. 🇭🇹
My grandfather spoke 7 languages. Never knew language art was possibly the reason why
Yes, that’s what language arts should be in the US. Not just another English class.
😊.

The real depiction of the American dream, my parents came to this country with nothing and this man works hard to provide the best for his adorable daughters . They are beyond lucky to have such a talented skilled kind father :) wish to see more stories like this! We need more positivity
People like this dude make NY beautiful.
As a Haitian violinist in Canada, this was like watching my uncle living his life, just as I live mine. I don’t know you, but just know that as of now, you’re Tonton Yves for me 🥺❤️
You bet !!! That’s so nice. Shanna what a lovely niece! Thank you
That visitor was totally going to meet his Grindr hookup 😂
I couldn't put my finger on why he was so awkward lol
NYC doormen have seen it all. The stories they could tell. The hookers, the tricks, the gigolos, mistresses, dope dealers, etc..... Nothing gets by them!
@@marquamfurniture Hopefully the disruptors don't kill the profession as they did the Taxi business !
LOL
you're a mess for this LOL
This was really special. And the maturity of his daughter during their MJ conversation. Wow. God bless our people
I love this style of video. None of that annoying voice talking over the protagonist of the video with annoying pop-up texts.
9:43- love the way he talks to his kids. Doesn't hesitate to talk about difficult subjects with them. He does not blast them with the harsh truth, but he does it in a way that is digestible to them. More parents should be like this.
This was great. It would be awesome if there was some kind of follow up in 6 months or a year to see how he and all his projects are doing.
I would be very happy with regular follow-ups on him, he's fascinating.
Unfortunately, he passed away.😢
I feel enriched just having watched this video. I wish I could know him personally.
You might know someone like this, and not even Know it. Passing him in a lobby, would you you have considered the Man behind the Uniform to be so dynamic? A question for yourself. There are A Million of Yves in NYC. Overlooked , and stereotyped.
beauty4u132 I know, that’s how I felt when I watched it. That there must me amazing people all around me.
Can we get a part deux of his story?
would love that
Loved the conversation in the diner with his daughter
A true renaissance man
Thank you !
That is why we should tip.our doormen well. 🙏
Caribbean people have one heartbeat! As a Jamaican, I love this man.
One for all and all for one.
As I Trini I fully agree
Absolutely magnificent! You can never judge a book by its cover. This short documentary is long is richness and the depth of the black diaspora.
As a Haitian woman, this man reminds me so much of my own father. Beautiful family, just beautiful!
This man lives unguarded. The genuineness, love, warmth and kindness really comes through.
I AM SOOOOOO IN LOVE...THE AUCTION, THE LITTLE LUNCH DATE WITH HIS DAUGHTER... THE NEGOTIATING FIR SARDINES TO SAVE LIVES...KUDOS
Extraordinary. Thank you New Yorker for sharing with us a glimpse of Yves life. It is multi-faceted individuals like Yves that makes this city unlike any other.
Well said .
You can tell this guy is such a good dad. What a hustler. Loved it.
🤣 Criss, I love your comment !

Could be a Denzel Washington movie I swear!
yes!!!!
This is probably the best film I’ve seen all year.
The Concierge is a very talented man with a heart of gold. Thank you for featuring an artist with joy in his heart.
He flew all the way to Haiti to delegate Sardines for the kids... 😫... Bless!💯
Is he trilingual? I heard him speak english, spanish, and french.
Don't forget to add Haitian Creole to the list! That's what he was speaking for most of the ending.
You gotta be
If you ever go to Domincan Republic alot of Haitians speak over 5 languages.
Johnny Calderon I can barely speak English properly! Amazing how humans are when they push themselves 👍🏽
I heard him speak English, french, Spanish and, Creole perfect.
This gentleman has an amazing range and feel for each situation and the character energy that exist within them.. intelligent within so many aspects and extremely admirable!!!
Thank you !
Such a classy man! Very few like him in the world! And most importantly, he seems so kind 💙
many many more than you seem to think. they just get the focus of public attention, for our society prefers to adorn the psychopathes who who we deem as worthy because successful at holding power.
His soul, his personality are just beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever met a man like this this really impacted my entire day thank you for posting
Thank you Diane, that’s so nice to write this comment , as if you’ve known me personally.
This channel is so underrated...
I'm surprised the building management lets him play at the desk. That's exactly the kind of thing a PITA resident would raise a fuss about.
Thank You for reminding us, we’re so fortunate. We’re blessed every day by loving, 💗 brilliant, generous people, such as Mr. Deshommes.
This man has that elusive thing called serenity to him. A beautiful person with a beautiful life
Apana Mehta: thank you.
He is amazing. It just shows the genius is sitting right in front of our faces if we just decided to get to know people.
What a great father.
wish they showed him performing
One of the most beautiful, moving videos I've seen in quite some time.
Guy is a GEM!
13:40 This scene is just so poetic 💕
God bless that man! 🤲🏽
That story is so inspiring.
Amazing, managing all his project. But the stress of it all? Wish every1 could focus on what they love instead of hustling+bustling24/7
It is very inspiring. It makes me think of all the artists that paint these beautiful pictures that I don’t even know and have access to. If only their art was readily available
Needs to be a part 2 of this storyline

How cute is the children determined to hold his hand. So sweet
Sah, has it been stage, your comment would be just a comment, these children are so affectionate, at some point they feel like your OWN CHILDREN. I am most grateful to be the ambassador next to them.
This guy is a freaking genius! Wow...this is a beautiful doc. thanks! Never look down on people b/c of their occupation.. brilliance often lives in the humblest of places
What a heartbreaking loss. I am sure Yves will be missed by many, and am so grateful that Lydia shared this snapshot of his life with us so that his memory can be preserved. Rest in peace 🌹

I kinda of love this. His story would make a better movie than hidden gems.
This New Yorker content is spot on, I love it
This should be a movie or documentary at the least. This is a wonderful human, thank you for capturing and sharing this
What a beautiful man and family. Really enjoyed this.
I use to play the violin. This was awesome. 🥰 🇭🇹 He is very inspiring. I wish more of this was shown coming out of Haiti.
I got it! There is always an opportunity to use, share, and perfect your talents. And to whom much is given, much is required. Be of service people- like he is! 🙏
This was SO well directed! Loved everything about it!
The attention to his daughters, and the attention to the beautiful children of Haiti. He is living in his purpose, even through his day job.
came back to tell you all that I saw him this morning in this same building and it definitely puts things into perspective. he was very kind, always be kind to others ✨

His Haitian his speaking creole, so he speaks French , Haitian Creole , Spanish and English.
What a beautiful human being. As a filmmaker, this was extremely well crafted 😊🎬
This was really moving and inspirational. Please do a follow-up. I would like to know how came to play the violin.
What a wonderful and inspiring man! Knowing there are people such as him gives me hope that humanity just might make it.
omg, my dermatologist is in the building. HE IS AMAZING!
This was awesome and heart warming. I would love to buy some art to support the school. And the children. Such a multitalented brother.
This is a man of many talents.
I can feel the passion he has for helping the people around him and his community whether that's in Haiti or in NY. Bless this man, I hope more light and recognition shines on him so he can continue to spread his love around the world.
I have been inspired by this beautiful story. Needs to win international awards. I have noticed he has very intelligent eyes. Does not miss anything. He can make a great actor too, like Denzel Washington. .... I hope all in the building watch this.
A beautiful existence; composed of the efforts of one man doing his best - for both himself and those he cares for - and being an inspiration as a result.
Thank you Emsu J. It means a lot.
My goodness, this was so cool! Thank you for sharing your story, Mr.Deshommes. How can New York be dying when people like you are here and help it keep running?
