Cause he's not actually a good coach. It's easy to be confident when you're not actually having to defend why your team only got 4-6 wins. I'm not a huge fan of Zimmer either, but based on their pasts he's a better option than Rex Ryan.
Because Jerry knows with Dak then the Cowboys can't win.

Rex deserves a defensive coordinator job. He had the Jets in the AFC championship game with Mark Sanchez at the QB because they ran well and played great defense.

@@michaes5182 that was as a head coach. His defensive schemes were great. Just look up the 2000 Ravens defense. They were suffocating. I could see him getting hired as a DC, though he is getting a bit old.
Before League figure out he couldn’t play that style of defense anymore.

I think it depends.
In today's offensive perspective a coordinator like Zimmer might be a bit more impactful.
Rex prefers a man to man scheme and the league is shifting towards offenses that are exceptional at beating man coverages.
Zimmer is fine playing more of a mixed scheme with some man and some zone coverages.
Also Rex tends to be more scheme over players, in that regard more similar to Quinn whereas i believe Zimmer is slightly less egotistical and willing to adapt his gameplans for specific matchups.
So in this particular case, i do believe The Cowboys chose the right DC for where they are now but i did like the idea of Rex Ryan on The Cowboys staff.
What i have noticed over time is a lack of looseness and confidence against the best opponents and that's something Rex brings in spades!
He's more inspirational.
Zimmer is a bit too much like McCarthy and i'm curious to see if The Cowboys will still play tight against better opponents?
So while i thought Rex would have been a very good hire, i do believe Zimmer is the better hire.
It made more sense for McCarthy's lame duck season.
There will be a seriousness to the approach of the season.

Zimmer has had the most top 5 and top ten defense as a individual coordinator more than anyone else the last 20 years. And if you want to be recent, the Vikings defense where second in all major defensive categories from the total span of 2014-2021 only behind the pats. U think with your nipples

Dakota Prescott is not that guy
Romo was replaced because he couldnt stay healthy he broke down. Dak has been great against 90% of the league theres just a couple teams that seem to take away what they do best and its like theres no plan b theres no counter to it . The run game hasnt been something they can lean on . Teams just run the 2 high safety drop a bunch in coverage and daks got no where to go with the ball cd is getting bracketed. Look what kc did in the sb lotta runs with pacheco even tho he wasnt getting much lotta check downs and shorts throws run after catch
Dallas is a family owned business, it's not what you know it's who you know and who they feel won't upset the family.
As a Cowboys fan 2 things

I really want to know what Jerry means when he says “all in” I’m hoping he makes major moves. As a cowboys fan 29 years is a long time to wait for another Super Bowl. Cowboys as a team got 46 sacks, the FartyNiners got 48---- 2 more than Dallas. One went to the Superbowl, the other didn't. Getting sacks wasn't the problem, stopping the run was. Josh Allen had 94 yrd's passing vs Dallas, while the Bills blew them away with 250+ rushing I believe. Its not that Quinn didn't believe in bigger DT's & LB's. He lost LVE & Overshone at LB and Mazi Smith their 1st rd DT was a bust. 3 years in a row, Dallas defense led in T/O's under Quinn. The Cowboy's offense avg 29.9 pts per game. #1 in the NFL, Niners were 28.9 They went to the Superbowl. We didn't. There's a reason Rex wanted to join to Dallas . He gets it. 😉Zimmer is a great pick-up for Dallas.

I like the Zimmer signing but it would have been cool to have Rex too. He always has good energy and enthusiasm and he's definitely still football minded.
The only issue I'd have is that he's been out of the league so long that his defensive schemes might be outdated

Romo was not let go because he couldn't get it done in Dallas. Romo was injured and Jerry thought Dak was going to be the next Brady who comes in for the injured veteran player and wins the Super Bowl. Jerry was wrong because Dak needed to sit and learn under Romo for two years. Romo could have led the Cowboys to that Super Bowl if he was given the starting job back. See how bad moves from Jerry hurt the Cowboys? Now, Jerry is holding onto Dak way too long without getting trade value and protecting the future when he signed that big contract for Dak. Jerry went all-in and gave Dak a no trade clause.
