      You want them to call out their own refs? Or fire them? What? New refs? That went great last time. They did take them off the playoffs.
      The only way to fix this would be to overhaul the reporting system altogether. Honestly it’s pretty janky to have multiple guys yelling at refs every play and the ref running over to relay the information to the defense. Kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

      One, player rubs hands up and down on shirt to signal he's reporting as eligible. Two, he also has to tell the ref verbally. Three, the ref relays that info to the captain of the defense. Four, it is announced on the PA. Does this entire process really strike anyone as some vague rule you should try to mess with in order to gain a competitive advantage? Obviously not. Otherwise, why bother with this entire process? Campbell tried to get cute by messing with a rule that wasn't meant to be messed with. You can't blame coaches for trying to gain a competitive advantage any way they can, but the downside is that, once in a while, coaches fly too close to the sun and get burned. That's exactly what happened here. Dean Blandino said no ref would accept such shenanigans designed to trick an opponent, when the process is clearly designed for BOTH TEAMS TO KNOW who reports as eligible.

    Unbelievable Sam acting shocked that the lions were trying to confuse the Cowboys by not letting them know who is eligible until the ref says it. That's kinda the game of football. not letting your opponents know your next move. You send 1 guy to report, the defense knows for another 10 seconds or so who is eligible and can adjust and communicate. You send 3 and the defense then has to wait to hear what number from the ref over the speakers and then has less time to adjust. She just sounded so appalled to think that one team might try and trick the other team xD

    • @stolbez666legend
      @stolbez666legend Před 4 měsíci +3

      I think it was more of understanding how the ref could become confused. I get the point of it, but when you spend nearly 3 hours with the same number reporting and he's one of the three coming up to you on the final play, it's an easy assumption. I don't understand why they players didn't read the body language. 2 of them were a couple of feet away, 70 running over. All three clearly had to see him point specifically to number 70. Should have been a sign right there to MAKE SURE the ref knows you're reporting and not 70. Made it even more clear when they announced 70 over the PA, and it should have been abundantly clear when Dallas covered 70 but not 68.
      The ref screwed up, but so did the Lions. 3 different signs that the ref gave the wrong number and the ignored it. Did they not hear the announcement over the PA? If that's the case, I take all blame away from the ref. Much easier to hear something over a PA than a player trying to yell over crowd noise.

This totally changed the momentum of the game within the 2:00 drill for Cowboy's offense. It went from 2nd and 3 to 1st and 25. If the referee would call the tripping penalty correctly, it would have been Cowboy's 1st and 10 inside the redzone. And no time outs for the Lion's. It's possibly game over at that point. Miscommunication between the Lions and the game officials resulted in the Cowboys not being told prior to the two-point attempt that #68 had reported as an eligible receiver. As a result #68 was left uncovered, which gave the Lions an uncontested toss and catch for two points. What we know: 1. the Cowboys were not informed that #68 was an eligible receiver; 2. either the Lions, the officials, or both were failed to inform the Cowboys that #68 reported as an eligible receiver; and 3. leaving the two points on the board would have unjustly rewarded the Lions and unfairly penalized the Cowboys. Under the circumstances, replaying the down, while imperfect, was the only equitable solution to the controversy. Finally, it's important to recount that after the penalty, the Lions had three opportunities to convert the two-point play. The first was the completion to #68 that was called back for an illegal touch; the second resulted in a Cowboys interception, which was overturned by an off-sides penalty against Micah Parsons; the third and last attempt resulted in an incomplete pass. In the end, the Dallas defense held and the Cowboys won the game by 1 point. I'm certainly not pleased with the the officiating crew, but casting the Lion's as victims and the rightful winners of this game is a gross oversimplification and when viewed in total, it's just wrong.

    Here is what you SHOULD be considering:
    Campbell says he explained the play to the refs (I'm hearing just one of them) in their locker room before the game. A verbal description of something so complicated that none of the ex-NFL commentators/analysts could agree on what had happened. Did Campbell diagram the play for his players? DId they run through it many, many times so that everyone would know exactly how the choreography worked? Yep. Did he diagram it for the refs. Nope. So it was so convoluted that his own players couldn't be expected to get it without a diagram and multiple walk throughs, but a ref is supposed to get it perfectly from a quick description in the locker room before the game?
    Campbell's purpose was to fool the defense, so they wouldn't know who was eligible. He tried to defeat the rule, and the purpose of the rule. And part of the master plan was to play fast and loose with alignments on the line of scrimmage, so it isn't really clear who is up on the line and who is back. (Did the Lions actually have 7 men on the line of scrimmage? I don't think so.)
    One last thing - Campbell admits that more than one person reported. According to him, both Decker and Sewell. So he had Sewell reporting as ineligible, knowing that he would be lining up in an ineligible slot. I'm not even sure if that's legal, and can't find anyone who does know for sure. Skipper runs in and it sure looks like he reports (I guess that was the idea?) But you can see the ref go directly over to tell the defense that he is eligible.
    So at the very best, his Campbell's gadget managed to fool the refs too. What you do konw is that if the Cowboys knew that slow, fat Decker was supposed to be eligible, he wouldn't have wide open like that. So Campbell went looking for a way to defeat the rule, and he got bit by it.

    I have been watching NFL Football for over 60 years and enjoy it. My best friend bets on games and has come to the conclusion that they are fixed. I have a problem with that because it would be extremely difficult to do so. But, this series of events is starting to convince me that he is right.

REF ANNOUNCED TWICE, "70 IS ELIGIBLE." 70 didn't say anything to the ref after that, the coach didn't call it out, and 68 didn't say anything to the ref after that announcement as well. Then to top it all off, the Lions set up in an illegal formation which would have been called anyway. The Lions tried to be sneaky, and all they did was confuse the refs.
