Wow I saw Queen live in 77 and 78 at Chicago Stadium and I was 14. I'm still in awe of Freddie and Brian is amazing. I wrote a long email which began by telling Brian a comment was incorrect so I set the writer straight. I never thought he'd read it. In a good mood that day I wrote a funny and engaging note and it was 10 paragraphs. I was shocked he wrote back. He "never reads emails more than a paragraph but he said "you were so funny and engaging I couldn't help but read it" I was shocked he took the time. I was thinking he'd never see it so it was funny, relevant. Even said "hope to meet when in Chicago." He's madly in love with his wife and so proper he was amazingly kind. Mike Myers said he's a very sweet lovely man. Talented, brilliant etc...
@dinger454 The Beatles had the media behind them plus they didn't tour like Queen did. The Beatles were able to produce more records because they toured less. I like the Beatles but I agree, Queen were definitely more talented. What makes me mad is when I hear the same people mentioned when talking about greatness. If you combine voice, stage presence and songwriting, Freddie beats Elvis, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. And Freddie definitely beats anyone today.
It's a bit like George Harrison, he was known as 'the quiet one', but people who knew him personally said he never shut up. He probably struggled to get a word in with John and Paul lol.
Freddie had a very posh English accent and you can hear it in Queen songs. For example during 'Too Much Love Will Kill You' the way Freddie sings "torn between your lover and the love you leave behind, you're headed for disaster cause you never read the signs", Freddie's posh accent was very distinct and brought an extra wow factor into his singing.
Doesn't matter how Freddie was about this, about that... Freddie worked very hard for Music. He was THE singer of songs & THE LOVER OF LIFE. HE WAS IN LOVE WITH LOVE TOO. He's a Legend till the end of time. All my respects for this amazing & lovely man ❣👑
I also love to hear Freddie 'speak'. He has a lovely voice timbre.Gosh, he's wearing that live aid rehearsal t. shirt again. What a great shame Freddie felt hurt about the UK press. His concern was for the fans' following. I realy like this interview because Freddie was very realistic in his comments. Yes, Freddie, wealth DOES bring problems...
I can just listen to Freddie speak all day. I love how his normal talking voice gives the opposite expectation as far as vocal capacity goes. He sounds as you'd expect, being a refugee schooled in the UK, but sings better than any of the girls at college X'D. Absolutely smashes the shit out of the entire music scene with his wide repertoire of talent. Someone who not only writes songs, but has written some of the catchiest and most meaningful anthems the world has ever heard. You need to have some understanding of music theory (taught or self-taught) to write a piece of music though you don't need an awful lot of skill to write a piece of music the rest of us would define as an actual piece of music. Many sit just above that margin, whereas others try to produce something really magical. And you don't need a lot of content to make a catchy track. IT IS possible to produce a basic song which is very catchy, like "Imagine" by the Beatles. But it is still very difficult to do! Freddie's tracks would have 2 - 4 times the amount of melodic content of any other competitor and every key sounding justified and resolved, as in it would sound worse if you subtracted, added or moved any note even a tiny bit. That's when you know the guy was playing with every feasible idea imaginable, and his final piece was the result of decades of learning and years of trial and error trying to find THEE best composition humanly possible. The composition which will make him immortal as long as the human race exists. That's why he is a God.
Freddie's a little 'faced, here. Repeating himself, slurring a bit. Roger told a story of the concert they played later that day, and Freddie was so drunk by that point, he had his tights on backward.
Hey see above, it was the day of the show Freddie was wasted and from what I read very funny but Brian has a look of WTF THE whole 1/2 hour until he sobered up. No the way it was described Freddie couldn't stand or dress himself so no way give an interview. The interview was the day prior to concert
Read the entire funny incident in "Freddie Mercury: The definitive Biography" Leslie Ann Jones. Good friend of the band and long term trusted Journalist. She provides the witness accounts and it was show day and he got uncharacteristically drop down wasted.
If you notice on interviews from their early career, Freddie stayed kind of quiet. He never really said much and always let others speak. Something happened along the way...he started to take charge during interviews later on for some reason. I love it though. For me, there isn't enough interviews with Freddie talking. He can talk all he wants! ;D
No one has been able to match half of Freddies and Queens ability in the last 20 years...best band ever...for all the true fans you know i'm right because we hear their songs in stores, commercials, stadiums, even elevators!!!
when freddie speaks, it's like he's an everyday person, no different than you or i. something unique and special happens when he sings tho, truly a one in a million talent. thanks for all the great tunes.
I read about the New Zealand concert in a book written by a friend of the band entitled just , "Freddie Mercury" Yes, in an unusual occurrence, Freddie and a friend who was in town from I think Spandau Ballet (sp) had a full afternoon of drinking. One bottle of Stoli, led to another, and the 2 then went to Fred's room and continued drinking port and a scary combination of liquor and he was so wasted there's no way he could sit to be interviewed. He showed up at the proper time yet couldn't dress himself and they got him dressed. And he went out on time, forgot lyrics and Brian was like "wtf", Roger was "pissing" himself which is laughing and this went on for 1/2 hour. He sobered up but then the friend went on stage to sing Tuti Fruity and forgot words, went up to Brian and mocked funny lewd motions. Brian still had that WTF? Look. Show good from then on. The band avoided New Zealand afterward. Freddie was probably embarrassed since he is such a professional. I'd love to see that!!!!
I will forever be thanking my dad for playing Queen throughout my childhood. If it weren't for him, I probably would've never loved them as much as I do. I was born 4 years after Freddie died, and it saddens me that I will never get to see this amazing man live. RIP Freddie, and Happy Birthday.
You're right when you wrote that America missed out on them due to lack of airtime. I've been following Queen since the mid '70's or have tried too. It was very difficult because back in the '70s there was no youtube, no internet, no cable, there was nothing but only radio. And my town's radio stations hardly ever played Queen. I couldn't get any information on them. It pissed me off because I loved Freddie's voice and I thought Roger was the cutest guy. :) So thank God for youtube.
@Yo1969Yo To be fair though Bohemian Rhapsody has been declared the best song ever written, by most of the musical world and this must say a lot about Freddie and his gang.
as much as i loved the WHOLE thing, i lol'ed when john started smoking and that triggered roger to want a cig and when he couldn't find any, he just went ahead and took one of john's. thank you for sharing :-)
This might not be related to anything that everyones talking about but I was just born when you wrote this comment I m really sorry it's just so fascinating to me
+ian coulbeck did you see the whole "first half hour was a mess", "he banged his head on the piano in somebody to love" thing?? The story Roger tells about Freddie and Tony Hadley getting wasted before the New Zealand show and Freddie being really fucked up for some of the show
@cortadew I respect your opinion. The word "musician" covers such a wide range. IMO Freddie & Elvis had the best voices in music, great quality vocals. But Elvis did not write songs. Even though Michael, Paul & John wrote classics (mainly Paul & John), they did not have great quality vocals. Freddie had a great quality voice & he solely wrote many classics. Not only did he write the lyrics but also the music to accompany the lyrics.
I don't know, but I love Freddie's hair in the early-mid 70's even more.....I even cut it to look like his hair recently! LOL I had bangs before I got into Queen, but I just HAD to have Freddie's hairstyle....love it so much........
Irishfox they were very down-to-earth people. such a good heartedness about every single one of them. it cracked me up so bad when Freddie keep saying I don't give a damn and he shakes his head with emphasis when he says it so funny LOL. love this band, miss Freddie
yeah that goes to show you what unhappiness can do to you even if you're rich. You look for happiness in other places with no reguard to the dangers of it or knowing the dangers but searching for it is so strong it kills you.
Looks like there was nowhere else to stand the ladder was just there so he rested his arm on it. Interviews often take much longer than we see from the finished footage
Funny I heard Phil Collins say something similar about wealth and money and the problems that come with it when you are rich... I think he said something like "With wealth it comes with a different set of problems" (in comparison to being poor).
BTW I don’t think Freddie’s drunk. I think he’s pissed 😤. After all, most of the criticism from the press and punk rockers was leveled specifically at him. I think he’s pretty articulate here.
@MsLadyRobin Hey I was just wondering how it's known for sure that he found out around Easter of 1987. I read Mercury and Me by Jim Hutton and I can't remember if this was in the book. I'll have to check that out. And I am sooo curious about what it was like to see them play at Live Aide. It's so cool that you saw them live!!
@Yo1969Yo well the people you refer to had different history in music they sang different styles and had different views of life. They were all masters of their game but for me and i think for very many people a totally different game for each and every one of them. Can't compare a glorious glam rocker with a pop king a rock'n'roll king or two rock pioneers, it just doesn't work that way. Great musicians all of them and their music will live on forever.
@MrNotyag Freddie did speak the truth. He said you can be happy in certain areas. He is talking about being wealthy & successful in the music business.
I'm THRILLED to find this relatively-decent video quality of this interview! (I've seen the interview before - but w/o the shots of the interviewer edited into it - but the video quality was HORRIBLE)
because he has a lot of important things to say! and that's good! I don't think that he's trying to steal the attention in any way, he just comes up with good things. And remember that Freddie is the world's most charismatic singer ever, so I think he naturally wants to speak a lot.
What really annoys me is the press support nowadays of the useless drivel that is churned out on these utterly stupid talent shows. if Queen had the press behind them instead of against them, they would undoubtedly be the biggest band the planet has ever seen. 4 genius musicians. 4 extremely intelligent people and4astute business man. When does that ever happen in a rock band. Queen quite simply should have blown away the Beatles as they have more talent. Queen do and will always rule.
It seems there was something on Freddie's mind when he refered to "wealth." I think he said the question was very delicated and it can be asked separately. His comments made me realize that there was, in fact, an disagreement between Roger and Freddie for the loyalties on Bo Rah & IILWMC. Supposibly, Roger wanted to share equally the loyalties because his song was released with Bo Rah as a B-side, but Freddie found that unfair because his song was the reason of the success.
thank you very much.Listen to me, i have to realize an english website about queen for my english teacher,so i need more details about their impact to people. Can you do me this favour please?
I never actually knew they came here to New Zealand until I saw this old interview about two years ago. But I don't where exactly they were in this interview, were they they in Invercargill, were they in Dunedin, Christchurch, or otherwise most likely Auckland?
Yes he is....you can just tell by his body language that he is disgusted by smoke. On his website, he writes a lot of information about petitioning to ban smoking in resturants (in England)!!!!
@NScole6407 No, he's not preventing himself from the smoke :) That's Brian - he was the only non-smoker in the band and he got used to live with another 3 smokers :)
freddie is so right with the British media, they don't give a shit who they offend just to get a story. Reminds me of a freddie quote from 1986 Live at Wembley concert - he said a lot of rumors had been going round about them breaking up and in reponse he said "Their talking out of their arse, we'll be together until we fucking well die" - such a sad lose and waste of a great man.
I saw this concert, was only 14 then now I'm 43 and is still the best show I ever saw and will never forget it. Thankyou Queen
