naw we glad they did somthing with them, they were meant to teach them how to understand density and why other metals are heavy, cuz in one vid one of the guys didnt understand why, so we thought they'd drop them
The reason they're confident is because gold has a pretty high melting point and because it's reflective, a lot of the heat energy is reflected off of the bar. sand it and make it less shiny and it'd more than likely get much hotter.
You should try this again but pick one or two of these
Tungsten (T): 3420 °C.
Rhenium (Re): 3180 °C.
Osmium (Os): 3050 °C.
Tantalum (Ta): 2966 °C.
Molybdenum (Mo): 2620 °C.
Niobium (Nb): 2468 °C.
Iridium (Ir): 2454 °C.
Ruthenium (Ru): 2310 °C.
Tungsten (W).

Gold is an amazing conductor, so you were in essence trying to heat up the entire bar, which is why the small piece melted and not the big one!
Yeah, like most metals you either melt the whole thing or nothing.

But thermal conductivity is probably involved with how quickly the heat is spread. They do not reach melting point on the large bar because the thermal conductivity is not allowing heat to build up around the point of contact.
Also, very little convection is probably occurring. Most of the transfer is radiation.
