    This Tungsten Cube is pretty much the heaviest 4” cube you can get here on earth. It’s one of the densest elements which makes it insanely weighty for its size. You literally can’t make sense of it when you see it then try to pick it up haha. We’ve been wanting to KO stuff with it at our drop tower for ages so it was epic to finally get it done!

    A serious question for you guys- Does the Gravity Research Centre (by which I mean the building next to the tower you use, which most likely owns it) have a seismometer on site? If so, I think it would be very interesting to look at the readings whenever you make a drop, as technically you would be causing mini earthquakes to occur each time you impact. You could also then literally quantify the force transfered from the impacts (given that the mass of the Earth and distance of detection from the impact would be effectively constant) and determine a scale of energy transference- you could quantify just how hard Brucie can punching the Earth, for example.

    • @Sheridantank
      @Sheridantank Před 3 lety +13

      It’s not a “mini earthquake”. They surely would register on a seismograph though. You could compute the forces Just with basic math without dropping anything. They should get a seismograph to measure the impact though, still a good idea

      There's a formula for that somewhere. I'm not a scientist or a mathematician. It has something to do with force, mass, acceleration and stuff. I only know the limited bit I read from looking into maximum break strength (MBS) of carabiners. I have taken an interest in climbing trees (arboriculture) and I dive down rabbit holes every once in a while. I'm still very ignorant to a lot of the trade though.

    Some physics comparison here with a .50 Cal bullet:
    •The energy of the tungsten cube from this height is 9kJ while the .50 cal bullet is 18kJ, bullet wins here
    •The momentum of the tungsten cube is 600Ns vs the .50 cal's 38 Ns, so the cube wins here
    In short, the bullet can break more stuff but the cube sends the shrapnel flying more explosively. It would be interesting to compare the two in destructive power in a video!

    The appropriate kinetic energy of that cube is 8379 joules. It’s similar energy to the .378 Weatherby Magnum, which is an elephant gun. Or about 2.4x a 7.62x51 NATO. The 50BMG for comparison can have up to 20,000 J a 9mm on the other hand has around 500 J. So In essence this is equivalent to a very, very big gun.

    4:24 the Fall lasted around 3 seconds, the acceleration was only from gravity (aka 10m/s^2) therefore speed of the cube when it hit the concrete would equal V=g*a = 30 m/s [meters per second] (not including the air friction). 4'' tungsten cube weighs around 18,5 kg, with the acceleration being 10 m/s^2 we can also calculate the strength at which cube hit the concrete from this pattern: F=m*g = 18,5*10 which equals 185N [Newtons]

Science!
