The conversation about academic achievements of kids of Caribbean and African decent is not Stupid at all. Nor is it weird to anyone who is interested about learning about the black experience. Poet let his emotions cloud his judgement on this. Please for the Love of God get Akala on to discuss because he has done so on several occasions to educate those within and outside our culture on why African kids do so well. Maybe there is something to learn for us all on this.

Poet was almost there regarding the Caribbean vs African conversation but he allowed emotion to get in the way and he’s probably not educated enough on the history/stats. People always forget to mention the fact that when our Caribbean grandparents arrived racism was LEGAL. People were allowed to discriminate against our grandparents with no consequences. They could reject them for jobs/houses based on their race. They could get chased and beaten up with no repercussion. It set the next generation up so poorly. When the first wave of Africans arrived (last generation) things were already cushty over here. Also the longer we stay in this country the more we lose touch of our cultural values. Caribbeans are 3/4 generations deep. Africans are only 1/2 removed generally.

Now that's a great point @MsDarkie93! Also you can add that some Caribbean folks also had with them an idea that White people were something special so they accepted alot of BS and thought to go along with the system rather than like Nigerians trick the system!

For me, this is the essential context a lot of the African community especially - do not understand fully, dismiss and disregard. I think it's the most important part of the conversation. It has caused serious generational trauma, and understandably - bioth able hatred and deep mistrust between many from the Caribbean community and various establishments & institutions.... leading to a deep disenfranchisement of many of the Caribbean community.

Folowing on from Poet's excellent point: My Great Aunt got over here after being referred by my Grandfather, and married a monster. He had affairs, controlled her money, and beat the shit out of her. Even though she was known as a bit of a rebel, she had to do a LOT to leave him. My Grandfather and all of their siblings were raised by the church, so with the kids shevhad from men who had affairs, she was shunned for it for a very long time. They all reconciled later, but stories like that lived throughout that time, and the communities were underground and underfunded, and there wasnt knowledge at the time. It's incomparable.

Very controversial , but I believe the real reason why there’s a difference in black academic performance is becausseeee, African kids are getting flogged more at home…
The pressure to not disappoint is buried within abuse, most of the time. Not all, of course but I think it’s important to talk about how much more of a sacrifice it can be for Africans parents to migrate to England to ‘better’ their children’s future. Whereas Caribbeans have more of a ‘link’ should I say? Windrush, Europeanised influence, etc. but in the same breath freedom of speech and expression is definitely more integrated within the Caribbean culture and in return less expectancy from their descendants. (Maybe?)

As for Black academic statistics, yeh defo have someone qualified come in to talk. There’s a lot of historical context, e.g. how there were discriminatory practices in Britain that disproportionately & wrongly enrolled Black children in a subnormal educational system, esp ones of from British Caribbean backgrounds.
Another is how Caribbean men’s, particularly mixed race children end up in care & a wrong paths due to a hard start in life. Jamaican dad mixed kids are in care in high numbers, this is due to fatherless broken homes I’d imagine. That whole stereotype about Carib men having mixed children & abandoning them, isn’t a stereotype unfortunately. We see this & we acknowledge this in the community, I’d imagine that this impacts the academics of kids of Jamaican/Caribbean descent. There’s a lot of nuance to this topic tho!

First hand experience here, born in Jamaica in 1992, came to London August 98, have lived allllllllll over London, Uxbridge to Croydon. Black people cannot thrive here and it still bugs me, we don’t have that proper sense of community like eg Jews in Tottenham, Asians in Southall, we tend to see each other as enemies rather than trying to bring each other up. I’ve watched friends from different areas behave completely different based on where they live. We focus on materialism rather than the future and that happens from 14 years old to 34 years old, people behave the same way if you have that mindset. I saw from early people dying, people going prison, people being fostered, and quickly realised this country is not-for-all-of-us.
I have since bought my own detached home (outside London) own my little bimmer and still watch what happens in London, it’s a shit show.
