Rally Trophy - A Casual Review

  • Rally Trophy is an Historic rally simulator released in 2001 for the PC. Touted as the "Grand Prix Legends" of rally sims, Rally Trophy was one of the first and maybe only Rally sim to focus solely on Historic Content. This was the first game developed by Bugbear entertainment, a brilliant development studio who went on to create the successful Flatout series and most recently responsible for Wreckfest. Rally Trophy was a serious rally simulation in its day and was extensively modded to add cars and tracks and modify the physics and was THE rally sim until Richard Burns Rally came along a few years later. These days Rally Trophy is still seriously impressive and a ton of fun to play and one I highly recommend spending an evening or two.. or three enjoying!

    Man, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this video. It brings so much memories, this game is my whole childhood.
    I used to grind it so much I finished the championship with every single car. I also used to be active in the NoGrip modding community, which at some point even developped an unofficial sequel "Rally Trophy 2", with totally redone physics, new cars and tracks,...this game got me into simracing, and into coding as well so I have to thank it for my career now ! NoGrip was also my first exposure to the Internet, and where I learnt English...this game also made me fall in love with classic cars.
    But these memories are also something more personal. See, I used to live at that time in a forest house, with the nearest city 15km away, My Summer Car style. My room was in the basement, by the garage. And the days in that time for me and my brother were filled with modding Rally Trophy and coding, or tinkering with electronics, bikes and stuff in the garage, then trying them in the forest. And the evenings we were reading some 60s car magazines my father got from a friend, and I dreamt about stories of the Coupe des Alpes or classic Safari Rally, listening to the radio and with a cup of hot chocolate on those basement-chilly winter days, while waiting for my x-hours download of a mod on NoGrip to end so I can try it.
    Those days were so carefree and out of this world tumults of the early 2000s, and I miss them so much I'm trying not to cry typing it.

    Fun Fact: Bugbear got Rauno Aaltonen to do the Finnish pacenotes in this game. If that name sounds familliar to you, he was one of the most successful rally drivers of the 1960's.

    You should take a look at Rally Championship 2000, sometimes sold as Mobil 1 Rally Championship. It has full-length stages from the British Rally Championships, and a slew of FWD and early WRC cars. They also do something cool in that they let you run the stages in reverse, and then also mirrored, giving even more stage options.

    • @Ash_18037
      @Ash_18037 Před 2 lety

      Yes would be good to see him look at that game. Physics and sound wise I think Rally Trophy is superior (it was a later game so no surprise), but Rally Championship stages just seemed a bit more natural and realistic of course with the longer lengths. Also, the narrower road surfaces with more detailed surface textures in Rally Championship I much prefer over the far too wide roads and bland looking surface in Rally Trophy.

    • @luisbarbosa5532
      @luisbarbosa5532 Před rokem

      That game is amazing, and the graphics were incredible for that time. The longer stages were really hard and the damage on the car was really good making the lights fail, engine hoverheat, bodypieces fall, even the window wipers could break.

    This title shaped my life pretty much. Got it at 13 yrs old, at 15 started being obsessed with modelling stages for it and learning modelling software, in fact those stages were never finished, but it turned into life-lasting passion and job as well. Looking forward for part 2, the Finnish stages 1 and 3 are my ultimate favorite ones, the flow thru them is just bellissimo.

Not sure if it was incompatibility (that was a state of the art wheel at that time, and came out quite a few years after this game), so wrong settings or what, but the wheel was jerking left and right. I remember I didn't use it much with that wheel, because I was afraid it was going to ruin the ffb motors/gears in it.

Pity you've run rallys in inter difficulty. In Expert mode car is more fragile. You can damged head lights and night stage will become very interesting :) Also in Expert mode there are more stages in rallys. Final stage in Russia is one of my favorites. Fast stage along railroad with super jumps - it's a blast in Ford Escort! Also Fiat 500 Works car is great. Rear drive short wheelbase car is very fun to drive. And co-driver in Russian version of the game is hilarious too! :D

I also have a DLL file which you put in the system folder on your PC that might work too. The map configuration screen is similar to a problem I had in some other games that I can't remember. I dropped the DLL file into the system folder and solved the mapping problem. But I haven't tried that with this game but I feel it may work.

    I really like how heavy the vehicles feel in this game. in newer titles it often feels like you're driving a twitchy kleenex box (which might be an accurate description of newer cars anyway, but I digress), whereas in this game it feels more akin to driving a boat, where you use the weight of the car more than the tires to maneuver.

    I remember playing this as a kid. I don't know if I still have the copy of it though.

    My first sim. Rally Trophy was the reason why I've got myself a wheel. I just couldn't drive anything RWD with keyboard.

    Nice gem from the past! I remember driving a lo of the mid pack rwd cars. The rwd volvo and the cortina were pretty fun to drive. The fastest ones were a bit too difficult to drive.
    Btw. your image is stretched. I'd guess the game doesn't support widescreen resolutions properly. If you look at the gauges for example they are wider than taller.

    Wow I forgot about this game. I played the demo wayyyy too much with my Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel back then.

    I can't help but laugh because my grandfather used to run a mechanic garage in Australia specialising in Swedish cars and he absolutely loathed Saabs.

    This game looks great, I wonder if it would’ve required a high end PC and graphics card in 2001. It certainly wouldn’t have run on what I had in 2001 but I would’ve had a blast playing this. One of my favorite racing games is Network Q Rally which came out a few years before this one, and had some similar features like repairing your car between stages and day/night/rain stages.

      No, I had an average pc and it ran flawlessly.
