Alanis Morissette being an INFJ (previously thought INFP)

- August 2020 Update: After several years of studying personality type and the Jungian cognitive functions in depth, I have come to the conclusion that ALANIS IS ACTUALLY AN INFJ, but I have chosen to keep this video up.
It just goes to show that no one should be typed without taking into account the cognitive functions. INFP and INFJ are extremely different and have a completely different function stacks, despite only being one "letter" apart.
I also want to apologize for the inconsistent volume throughout the video as well as the utterly obnoxious repetition of certain catch phrases meant to emphasize my point.

Very few people achieve Kohlberg's highest (sixth) level of rule-free, fearlessly conscious, moral conviction. Alanis has been there since she was in her early 20s for sure, and perhaps before that.
She's an anomaly. I'm so in awe of her.

So glad and thank you for updating:) I am a big fan of Alanis and have been convinced for some time that she is INFJ...I remember first seeing your video about her being INFP and thought, "Alanis being an INFJ more like it!" Can be hard to type celebrities but she is certainly I (no brainer there), N (thinks and speaks about underlying patterns and meanings a lot and rarely references linear facts), F (feeling is strong with her and data is almost non existent in her interviews), J (a good example is You Outta Know...she wrote it to bring closure...very J behaviour). Her Ni is very strong...her typical reason for writing comes from within whereas INFP's tend to get inspiration from outside of themselves)...and Fe is in nearly all her interviews where she speaks of wanting to connect with others, and help others...an extroverted focus rather than Fi) 😊
Interesting. I'm INFP and got here by searching for that, as I know I'd always heard she was INFP and always thought so myself bc I related to her so much. I guess there's probably not a ton of difference between the two, but wonder why it was changed. You Oughtta Know resonated with me, INFPs can definitely be like that when hurt too. But idk now, lol. As much as I like her angry feminist side, I most admire and appreciate her for her spiritual side. Looking back, as a 90s kid who is now a secular Buddhist, I realize she was my first teacher on this path in a way.

@@shaunbeswarick7952 Basically, I think the philosophy has great value and follow the path, but don't believe in anything supernatural woo woo, respect science. Not a big fan of organized religion, but deeply spiritual, believe we're all connected, practice compassion, loving kindness, right speech and action, gratitude, awareness, etc. Imperfectly, of course. 😊
I was bummed last year when I found out she was doing the tour but canceled it for COVID. Actually, my husband and I just got tickets today to see it in September! I'm sorry that you have to wait till 2022, but I'm sure it'll be worth it! If you still like her, haha. 😉 Not familiar with Birdy, guess I'm going to need to look into her!

Yep. I think she is probably an INFP. I wish the volume on the video were more consistent so I wouldn't have to keep turning it up to hear it, then down to keep it from being painful to my ears, but that is a minor complaint. I really liked how you compiled all of these interview fragments. I liked this video.

Alanis is one of my favoritest people ever, and even at the "Huh?" part on the video, I "got" her. So excited!! It makes me feel REAL and important and needed in this world when I watch videos like this. Btw, I have INFJ preferences so thank you for highlighting NF qualities in the vid.
Genius insight! Love the video. Listening to her speak I was taken with her idea of being like a flower. If you are in the flow of life you are a flow-er. A flower. A very INFP thought thaqt I recognise as one myself. Bless you and Alanis for this sharing!
I have always associated with her words, whether in lyrics or interviews. I've seen her labelled as INFJ too but either way, from an INFP here, there was so much I related to. Thanks for making this video! I kept laughing when Versions Of Violence came on.

@equitando Introverted doesn't mean people can't communicate or are withdrawn or shy etc. It means you get tired from being around people/strangers all the time and need 'alone time' on a regular bases. Alone time recharges introverted people, whereas extraverted people go to a club or a party to recharge.

@equitando I'm definitely INFP and I'm quite extroverted. Introverted in INFP description comes in terms of deepening inside for creating or for contemplating the volcano creation starting the birth inside you. We are not afraid of talking as some introverted people are. So, I think you should see at personality types in more broader way.
I read INFPs (I am one) are the most extroverted introverts. Introverted doesn't mean shy, quiet, or withdrawn. It just means we need alone time to introspect, reflect and process our thoughts. Recharge ourselves. That's all.

Patch Adams is INFP and loves helping people, but look at his life. he became a doctor from a deep frustation of the system of how people were being treated in hospitals (idealism). from that, because of that, he loves helping people.
I dont know much in-depth about personality types, but I know that I am an INFJ. And listening to her songs and reading through all her lyrics, I couldnt help but think she could be an INFJ too because I feel like her lyrics reflects my thoughts too precisely 🙂

Introverted in the myers briggs refers to looking inward when decided upon who you view the world, it has nothing to do with being open, having good communication skills and being sociable, and INFP can easily be a the life of the party while an ENFP can just as easily be deathly shy.

As an INFJ, I don't feel it's neccessary for anyone to know someone through outer expressions, but through a interpersonal perspective that is not meant to be completely understood.

As an INFP I have childlike qualities (seeing the good in people, always optimistic, n seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, etc.) Yet I am an old soul mature with wisdom n indepth knowledge on a variety of subjects. (I'll be 51 next month in July.) I have been using my 4th function lately, Extroverted Thinking. I read older mature INFPs do that. My archetype self is the innocent child and my persona is the wise old man (sage). To figure. Lol....
As an INFJ and an HSP, a lot of what she says resonates. I’m an INFJ 5w4, so my enneagram is different than hers. Nevertheless, I agree with her in regards to the dislike of the competitive aspects of the music industry, the big picture, spirituality and social issues. The way she thinks cognitively is very Ni-Fe.

I'm an INFP (well, actually the I & the F are pretty close to E & T, even the N isn't very far from S- in fact I've gotten those results on multiple occasions... don't think I've ever gotten a J though)

Except... !!! ... I wondering why you didn't normalize the sound so it doesn't jump back & forth from really loud to very soft & muffled. It's super easy to do, any media software has the function :-)

Alanis leads with extroverted Feeling, you got close with INFJ, but she’s actually ENFJ. She seems like an ENFJ 🤔 But could be an INFJ actually. She mentions "intuition" often. As an INFJ myself I am very introverted (but that's perhaps because of my childhood trauma) but not 2 INFJs are the same.

@bobbitsneazer Okay, but all the Introverted-Intuition, Extroverted-Feeler clips were selected instead of the opposite Functions of the INFP. This isn't a bad thing, INFJs & INFPs are very similar, we have the same Idealistic view of the world, very creative & imaginitive, but their emotion/purpose is expressed outward. Think of it like being Right- or Left-handed, we can use both but each person has a more dominant side.

INFJ uses extraverted Feeling to connect their values with those of everyone of the world toward a greater overall ambition, INFP uses introverted Feeling which is concerned with connecting its values to individuals whom they think display & have those same needs.

The Myers-Briggs system is way suspect because it takes a snapshot of a person in a momentary now and pastes an everlasting label on them. I have seen the Myers-Briggs =suggest= a general orientation towards others, but be way off the mark when unexpected, intervening variables come into play.
What I'm more intrigued with is her devotion to the views of Jiddu Krishnamurti and others of the anti-authoritarian / dis-establishmentarian / strictly experiential / "what is" school of thought.

What do you mean? Because you're an ISFJ, what you say have no meanings? No, she doesn't look like an INTP, and, if you do the effort in knowing more about MBTI, you can understand why she doesn't too. There's nothing about whether being an ISFJ or not.

@equitando I'm an INFP and I'm always mistaken as an extrovert. I think you misunderstand the definition of an introvert.
87enoughBULL I have a thought. Tell me what you think please if you see this. Ok. Back then when Briggs and Meyer composed the test in 1943, it was cut n dry -either extrovert or introvert. Black or white no gray between. Today there's a new term like a gray area between the black n white (introvert/extravert) called Ambivert. Perhaps you are on the high end of being an ambivert? :)
@@lisamcdonald425 The test does use a spectrum, and an ambivert will likely fall closer to the middle. I'm an ambivert, but still INFP. But even textbook introverts are not necessarily shy, quiet, or antisocial, just need alone time to recharge in between.
@@candi6642 Exactly. Have they changed the major test yet or adjusted it to say ambivert yet? I am an INFP like you (read other comments you wrote on other replies that you are) I can be extrovert or is it ambivert when I hanging out with close friends 1xs or 2xs a month or a once a year Dead n company show (Former members of the Grateful Dead n John Mayor) but I need to have a lot of alone time afterwards. I wasnt always so introverted like as a teen or in my 20's.Either a low end extrovert or highly ambivert. Idk...Since my 30s on (I'm 51 in July) I have mellowed out a lot.
I read somewhere INFPs are the most extroverted introverts. I dont know where I read that or if it even was an accredited site.
@@lisamcdonald425 They haven't changed it that I'm aware of. I just meant that when you take the test, you get an individual score based on a spectrum from completely I to completely E. You get classified as I or E, F or T, etc, based on which side you fall on, even if you have some traits of both and are close to the middle, so you're not necessarily exactly the same as others of the same type. One INFP could be a complete introvert, while others are ambiverts. From what you say, it sounds like you are an ambivert too. We like to socialize some and are people people, just also need plenty of alone time to recharge, whereas an extrovert is actually energized by being around others. I don't think mellowing as you age and wanting less socializing really changes your core type, if you still enjoy it sometimes. My husband scores E on tests, he's more outgoing, but also is more of an ambivert because he doesn't always like being around people. I think it's confusing bc most people probably are not completely introvert or extrovert, but fall somewhere on the spectrum, and I'm not sure if there is a clear point that someone goes from mainly introvert to ambivert, lol. @@candi6642Wanted to thank you for the article. I am reading it next. Yes, it makes total sense everything you said. You were quite helpful indeed. I don't know many true INFPs. The friends n FB friends that took the short version MBTI test dont seem to be INFPs but ISFPs. They can not follow me in abstract thoughts nor ever have ideas, theories, or possibilities, ok listeners, didn't jump out of line time thinking, etc. Werent any of these things. Maybe they weren't using Extraverted Intuition but everytime I quizzed them? Strange.

People should stop attributing false personality types to celebs. It creates so much confusion.
INFx are rare. Stop saying every other person is an INFJ or an INFP. Intuitive Feelers are already misunderstood as it is. By mistyping, everyone is contibuting to the mess.
