  • Restoring a Siku 1039 VW Golf Cabrio, in the range from 1980 until 1994.
My challenge this week is to undo the work of a previous owner who had decided they would prefer their Siku VW Golf Cabrio in black rather than lime green. But they certainly didn't make it straightforward when they chose to paint the windscreen, wheels and grille black as well as the body! They were kind in one respect and chose to not paint the interior though.
The real Volkswagen Golf Cabrio (or Rabbit Convertible depending on where you lived) launched in 1979. By now, the Mark 1 Golf was already five years old. All convertibles were assembled at Karmann's plant, where the Beetle convertible, which the Golf Cabrio replaced, was also produced. It's late arrival meant that despite the Mark 2 Golf's 1983 launch, the Cabrio remained based on the Mark 1. This remained the case with the 1991 Mark 3. However, a Mark 3-based Cabrio was ready for 1994.
The Siku model had an almost equally long lifespan. It was first produced the year after the real car's arrival and lasted until 1994. It came in either the metallic lime green mine once was, or white on later models. The base reads '1033 VW Golf LS' as it is shared with the earlier hatchback version which Siku launched in 1979.

Absolutely wonderful. Would love to see more Siku cars on your table. Preferably a Volvo 760 GLE or a Ford Sierra

I confess I'm not on Team SIKU yet, Jason. The build qualities from model to model varies widely, and the scale can be funky. Your paint scheme worked really well! The windscreen was a live and learn experience, but you dodged a bullet. I just would like to say, for me, your dialogue with all the facts and figures distracts my mind from fully appreciating your work as you do it! It's almost a two-watch show...once with the sound absorbing your research, and a second time without sound to fully appreciate your hard work!! Best, Stephen❤

I cannot believe it is the same model! The color scheme looks great and as far as the windshield is concerned I don't think you had a choice but to sand off the paint as it was thick and resistant to the Detrol and polishing compound. The decals for the wheels are just excellent. Thanks for sharing this tutorial.

Top job, especially on the wheels - usually an impossible thing to restore on Sikus. Just a note about your caution using caustic soda on plastic - it actually works very well to get paint off them, but once it's cooled down! I don't really like using it full stop any more as it can react with metal, especially on older toy car parts. Good old paint stripper for me!

I have found that it is possible with rattle cans to tint a first layer by applying a second colour to a just painted first layer. The second coat is just a quick one pass over the first.

Nice one,Jason.a touch of detailing would have added to it,i.e lights at the rear.don't go a bundle on the wheels on Siku period, even their trucks have Siku wording on them!

interesting shade of green. I like it. ^^ also neat trick on the wheels, but now they don't look as deep-dish anymore as they looked before? I seem to miss something here. :)
SIKU seems to have used the very first gen Cabrio, identifiable by the short bumper corners. the first facelift added longer bumper corners, the next facelift brought the wide taillights. but I'd have to research the exact year first. :)
