It looks really cool, but for $1000 it really shouldn't have mistakes in the wheels or break so easily.
I'm sure it's for the time it took to design it, so I'm sure it took more than a week or two, so I think that's fair, I mean it's not like it's mass produced
i have multiple 3d printers and i would of used a resin printer to do more of the smaller pieces as I feel like they would of been stronger and set the print to a finer detail you can see all the banding.

@@TheParksy72 what do you think the design and making of these parts are worth, I mean being a printer you know how complicated getting everything to fit can be designing it on the software and coming up with the ideas for the puzzles and putting them in a large piece like this can be extremely difficult
@@shable1436 Still not acceptable. For $1000 QA should be testing each product by hand to ensure it has the proper solution before sending it off to the customer. A redesign is also needed for the parts that broke off. Chris showed off the design flaw clearly. The rod should not have been able to be pushed up over the track, dislodging the plastic covers.
It's hard to excuse when these problems were easily avoidable.
As someone who owns several 3d printers, these parts could have been made a lot stronger then they actually were. They should not have broken that easy. If your charging someone 1k, put in the extra time to print skinny sections in 100% infill and find the correct temp to print at for better layer bonding. Orientation on the build plate also makes a huge difference for part strength. That back part snapped way to easy. Looks like the surface quality on the top and bottom layers of some of those parts didn’t look great either. I can see designing this must have taken a long time, which is where I think he’s getting the price from, but the end user isn’t going to see it that way. He’s going to see the broken and incorrectly assembled chunk of plastic laying in parts in front of him. There needed to be as much time testing the end result to make sure it would go smoothly before trying to ask that price.

The code you're looking for at the end is on the side of the train. The order for each character is listed in binary code -> 001=1, 010=2, 011=3, 100=4, 101=5, 110=6, 111=7

Yup, all through the video I'm yelling in my head "ITS OCTAL!" (A binary system of 0-7, thus 8 digits = Octal)

After seeing this, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for the experience. If you're going to send a puzzle to Chris, it better be top notch. The number of components that broke is indicative of, "meh it's good enough I guess"
3D printed puzzles can be great, even just having parts of a puzzle 3D printed can be useful too, but this is excessive. Maybe if SLA printing was used (even for just small parts), there would be less manufacturing errors, but this is far from a $1000 puzzle. This should be an affordable version of a professionally made wooden+metal train puzzle and repeatedly tested for failure points. Anyway, happy birthday and thanks for all the entertainment you've given us!
Definitely not a $1000 puzzle. Not enough material or time and quality in that puzzle to be worth that much.
As someone who does a lot of 3d printing myself and there are several issues with this one between material choice, infill choice, and surface finish. When he mentioned the price I was appalled. The quality of that print is not one I would sell in my etsy store and gives 3d printed objects a bad name.
@@JRosen99 I noticed right away that the part that broke on the back looked hollow and had thin walls, at that price add some extra perimeters and more infill to make the parts stronger!

You are so much more calm than I would be if I paid $1000 for a train puzzle and pieces broke and things were misaligned and couldn't be solved because of "manufacturing defects."
You handled yourself better than I ever would have. I would have wanted my money back; the puzzle was completely unsolvable and quite flimsy.
However, you were correct in as much as the puzzle was a good "blueprint" to follow to manufacture a piece made of more appropriate materials.

I agree. For a $20 puzzle, it is what it is. But for $1k I expect it to be extremely high quality. I mean, the damn thing was so shoddy that it was literally unsolvable. I hate how everybody has to be so PC. Chris should’ve said at the end that it was a piece of crap because it was

I agree, and honestly, as the manufacturer, I probably would have OFFERED a refund after seeing this. I just don't really get how you could make this, NOT quality check it and make sure it's easily solvable before sending it out, and then charge that much for it.

Happy Birthday! I can imagine a fragile puzzle worth $1K, but a puzzle that is unsolvable because of mistakes in the design just need to be recalled and remade.
The best ideas in the world aren't worth much without quality execution. I would be really disappointed if I paid for a puzzle that then broke down on me like that. Kudos for keeping your cool and giving the maker credit for his good ideas. I'd love to see a revisit if this one if the manufacturer does a quality rework.

Nah, I'd need a refund! For $1,000 the quality, not just the challenge, needs to be worth the price tag. Also, for that price, I need you to test each one you produce because misalignment/printing issues should not be an issue, at all.
Just a quick update: the seller has stopped selling the trains and went silent.
Love your videos. I do a lot of 3d printed items including running my own etsy shop. As a 3d printed product, I had some issues with it. The puzzle was obviously printed in PLA. For something with thin struts like that which are intended to be manipulated, ABS should be the material of choice. Also, I noticed on the back piece that broke off that the infill was rather low. There was also some pretty bad ghosting nearing the symbols and the surface quality was pretty poor leading me to think his printers need to be further tuned. As you said at the end, as prototype it works, but as a finished product I take issues from the 3d printed side of things particularly because it gives 3d printed objects a bad name.

As someone who builds models. You don't use a tiny bit of glue if you want the thing to stick together. Certain glues cause plastic to melt together. So use a lot to stick as much as you can.

This puzzle suffers from bad manufacturing, I'm going to say it was a piss poor decision to make it 3D printed. Just overall the puzzle was not good simply because of how it was made.
I can't make any judgement on the puzzle itself because it was ruined by poor execution, even if the concept wasn't bad.
I wouldn't say the decision was poor to make it 3d printed. However, it does suffer from bad manufacturing. There are several issues I noted seeing the with the puzzle that I would do differently if I were printing it.
No, given how intricate the puzzle is supposed to be, 3D printing was a bad idea.
@@Punmaster9001 I run my own shop selling 3d prints and I would be embarrassed to sell that puzzle. You can print items that have fairly tight tolerances. This puzzle was obviously with PLA. Abs would have been a much better material to print with as it is a much less brittle material. On one of the broken pieces, you can see there is very little infill. This should have been increased particularly for the thin parts. Finally, there is bad ghosting around the numerals and symbols and the surface finish is extremely poor. Both point to the manufacture's printer not being properly tuned.

Happy Birthday Chris!!! I’m not sure I would have paid $1000 for any plastic puzzle. You’ve had some absolutely beautiful handcrafted wooden puzzles that I would happily pay more than $1000, but I wouldn’t even put that on my shelf. 🤷🏼♀️
It's cool looking before it broke, but in all honesty before selling it, the numbers in the holes should have been reprinted to match the code, I think that would have been easy to fix, and the front and rear beefed up with better glue or thicker parts

$1000 for something that breaks that easily and has manufacturing mistakes preventing the puzzle from being solved properly... yup, sounds about right.

Your intros are always so amazing and the time you guys put into them shows every time. Happy Birthday also. For the final tumbler it looked like it had 7 places. The black panel you took off that had the 1s and 0s to get the first combo also looks like the numbers match those that are along the sides of the train that has the symbols beside them. Maybe those numbers on the panel show you the order of the symbols coinciding with the mentioned ones on the train? Always a pleasure watching your videos. Keep up the amazing work.
for $1000 I'd be disappointed too. I get that you're paying for the idea and the design but for 1k they could've splurged for some decent materials. 3D printing is dirt cheap, it tends to look kinda bad with all the obvious layers, and it's super fragile. Definitely not the best suited material to something youre gonna be regularly manipulating in weird ways. So far the only 3D printed puzzle/object I've seen that I thought actually looked better than what you could do in normal plastic or metal was that satin grey and orange Angel Box puzzle you did not too long ago, that thing was beautiful. Hopefully this guy sends you a fixed version!
Just found out that I have the same birthday as Chris Ramsay! As for the puzzle, this really did feel like a prototype that you shouldn't charge that much for. And if they knew this one was going to someone making popular puzzle videos, they really should have double checked that everything was in order.

Definitely one of my favorite intros probably the best in my opinion
i think i have the last thing figured out, its
big triangle with little triangle pointing up
corkscrew (tornado looking thing)
4 lines that point up
2 triangles opposite each other
big triangle with little triangle pointing down
pyramid of lines
and finally the symbol on the toolbox
reason for the solution, the numbers on the other piece of the toolbox (where the flashlight was) are indicating which symbol goes first when reading from left to right on the side of the train. the symbol to the right of the 001 is the first symbol, the one to the right of 010 is the 2nd, etc.

I agree this needs to be built correctly with metal. The 3d print was a lot of work but it had to to many design flaws and broke too easily. This would be a great puzzle
Definitely needs higher quality parts and the combination needs to be fixed, but it has a lot of promise. I like cyphers, but I'd be tilted too if I spent 2 hours and another super complex looking combination object pops out. Like how many more complex combinations does one need to solve to have a fun puzzle. 🤷♂️. I would have preferred a transition from code to some other form of problem to solve. Just my opinion.

Happy birthday! I’m in at 9:00, and to answer your question what I’d be trying: the suitcase seems it could fit the back compartment. Pressing it into the magnets might open the suitcase. (Let’s see how well this will age…)
For a 3D printed puzzle that's so easily and unintentionally breakable, the engineering did not look worth $1000 per unit. $500 a unit maaaaaybe, if even that much.
It would be great if this could be remade with stronger materials and higher part tolerances.

@@johngavlick6479 That's one option, A turdy wood or possibly even thicker plastic could also work. I would have also painted some of the harder-to-read clues to make them more legible.

33:30 The part that broke in the rear was printed in poor orientation. It broke off from the pring layer which is the weakest possible part of any 3D printed item. The print orientation for that part should have been so that the layer goes along the beam of the part.
You need the magnifying glasses with the head lamp that surgeons use. It would help with seeing those tiny details. Plus, I can just see you wearing them for the hell of it 🤣

interesting, interesting to see the ways you can make a bad puzzle, dont know if ive ever seen one that isnt great because it just throw way way way to much info at you with no clear steps or place to start or path of progression to follow
It's like a physical version of one of those early text-based computer games where you have to try putting everything together, with no rhyme or reason, until something works.

My thought too. He didn't quite solve it. Don't blame him for taking a break, but I was expecting him to come back and show what the end of the puzzle was.
this thing looks pretty good but I'm on the bandwagon that "it's hard but not good" of all of the puzzles I"ve seen you do, most of them at least make sense, this one has so much randomness to it and the terrible QC for manufacturing at $1000 is just...a very bad look for the creator.
So with a $1g puzzle they should have printed this using ABS, which is like the plastic for legos, instead of PLA filament. This would have made the puzzle much more durable, especially since there's moving parts and gears that need to not break. Also, they should have tested that the puzzle worked before selling it to you.

I thought it would be pretty obvious that the numbers were binary but maybe that's just me, for a $1000 this thing should not be breaking that easily. 3D printing is still too brittle for this sort of puzzle with moving small parts. Happy Birthday Chris. Love the videos.
3d printing is not necessarily brittle. The creator of this puzzle obviously used PLA to print the puzzle. PLA is a brittle plastic. If I were printing this puzzle on one of my printers I would have done it out of ABS instead. ABS tends to flex without snapping unless you really torque it.

Too many manufacturing oopsies with this one. Should've been done more carefully and out of metal (even if recycled alloys were used to lower the manufacturing cost) before putting a 1 grand price tag on it.
I say put it to the hammer to get the most enjoyment out of it.
If my hubby was still alive, he would have loved this one as he had many G-scale trains. And he may have been tempted to build puzzles because he was a tool and die machinist
