      It actually is, in all honesty. Hundreds of tons of useless extra mass in the form of (by modern standards) low-grade steel armor that might have been effective against WWII battleship guns, but won't do a bit of good against nuclear weaponry (or other weapons even more powerful), but will greatly impair acceleration/deceleration and maneuverability, as well as massively increase fuel consumption.
      Loved the show though.

    • @polygondwanaland8390
      @polygondwanaland8390 Před 4 lety +80

      @@Hibernicus1968 If you have the sort of energy generation onboard necessary for antigravity and FTL, I can't see a few hundred tons being incredibly important. But actually, battleship armor has been tested against and holds up well against nuclear weapons. Look into the Crossroads nuclear test. You're vastly underestimating the sheer strength-through-bulk of eighteen inch thick steel plate. That's a ridiculous amount of metal, event a contact nuclear detonation isn't guaranteed to blast through the belt. You'd be right to point out here that the vast majority of the ship isn't armored to that level, but the Yamato's armor design was essentially a very well armored box with everything critical inside it. Thin areas are still 8"+ thickness in the citadel.

    • @Hibernicus1968
      @Hibernicus1968 Před 4 lety +25

      @@polygondwanaland8390 Mass is ALWAYS important. No vehicle that is really meant to perform carries extra mass. Mass means extra energy needed to propel it, stop it, change its direction. If two ships carry the same armament and have the same power plant and fuel capacity, but one carries 20 or 30 percent more of it's total mass as dead weight, than that heavier ship is ALWAYS going to be a huge performance disadvantage. Why would you design a ship that way? It's a needless inefficiency, and certainly not a luxury you can afford when the survival or your species is at stake.
      And the battleships you mention holding up against nuclear weapons, really didn't. They were on the periphery of nuclear tests at Bikini atoll and other locations. They survived not the nuclear blast itself, but a shock wave generated by the blast, at some distance. That's a far cry from near or direct hits. Cheyenne Mountain's 25 ton blast doors, made of much higher strength steel than Yamato's armor were only expected to withstand blasts two or more kilometers away. And I remind you, some of the advanced weaponry we are talking about in this scenario is SUPERIOR to nuclear weapons. Steel armor that Japan could manufacture in the 1930s is simply NOT going to provide much protection against this level of weaponry. To provide adequate protection, you're going to need some kind of super-strong, high tech unobtanium alloy, or you are going to need energy shields. In either case, it makes no logical sense to repurpose Yamato's hull. It would be like trying to turn the HMS Victory into a submarine capable of reaching a depth of 90 meters. MAYBE you could do it, if you were ingenious enough, and threw enough money at it, but it would make a lot more sense to start with a clean sheet of paper.

    What I absolutely love about the 2199 reboot is that they turned a whole lot of plotholes around. For instance, Yuki Moris likelyness to Princess Sasha (or was it Isha? I cant remember), which was only referenced in about two episodes of the original and quickly forgotten, becomes a full political ploy in the new one.
    Lord Desslar turned from literally Space Hitler to a Leader with far more nuanced personality and understandable motives, even showing kindness and forgiveness at times. (He still goes batshit crazy at the end though)

    The funny thing about that revolving "carousel" fighter hanger launch and retrieval system is that on the original show that started in 1974 through 1983, it wasn't a thing.
    The fighter bay and the much smaller Wave Motion Engine room (that the hanger surrounds) were - aside from the ship being significantly larger than the original canon (333 Meters vs original 265) - were arguably the biggest internal departures from the original depiction. And they are absolute ingenious additions to the concept. (more below)
    In the original, there was actually supposed to be an open space in the middle - a short "runway" ending in a drop out of the rear hatch downward. On either side of that "runway" were "Shelves" where the fighters were stored/parked. Three(3) levels high (though animation mistakes sometimes made this Four(4) levels high)) and 4 rows back on either side for a total of 24 spaces.
    There was actually supposed to be an UPPER Fighter bay where a similar arrangement (reversed) led to two launch tubes forward of the catapult launchers. This fighter bay was almost never shown in operation. In total the original fighter complement of the original series Yamato was supposedly 48 fighters.
    Needless to say - if you do the geometry, (particularly taking note of the MUCH larger engine room somehow sandwiched between the lower and upper fighter bays) this is WILDLY impossible, and the original Yamato would've had to have been 600 meters in length for this to even get close to working as portrayed. The original series Yamato had to be part TARDIS! The length of the ship was always canonized at 265 meters despite all of this because that's nearly exactly the length of the original sea-going battleship Yamato and the producers insisted that it stay that way.
    Why? Because the original Space Battleship was supposed to be LITERALLY the old wreck refurbished. This is also wildly impossible now that we understand two things - first - we now have a much better understanding of the process of corrosion at those depths. In 200 years there will not BE any wreckage left to resurrect, there will only be nodules of iron oxide and maybe a few scraps of the thicker armor sections left. (For comparison the Titanic will be COMPLETELY gone in about 100 years - possibly less) The other thing that kind of kills the concept of a resurrected Yamato is that the wreck is in worse shape than originally thought when the show began in 1974. (In fact they hadn't even FOUND the wreck until after the original run of the shows and movies concluded in 1983!) They thought it sank in one piece and landed upright. But in fact, the Yamato is broken badly into 3 distinct chunks and two of them are upside down. Yeah - that ain't happening...
    So the remake version is NOT the original resurrected Battleship. It's built in the same spot. And likely the high concentration of iron ore from the original wreck helped disguise the construction from sensors. And it is built largely in the same shape - also for camouflage (but also for other reasons which don't bear going into in this post). But the space version is - as noted above - larger than the original.
    And the engine room and fighter bay block make MUCH more sense than the original. Also - the remake makes it clear that the ship only carries 24 fighters in the fighter bay - plus the two Cosmo Zero catapult launched fighters - for a total of 26, not 48. The rotating launch system not only works - and also FITS in the space depicted - but it's AWESOMELY COOL to watch in operation!
    As a big fan of the original - I have to say the designers have kept the spirit of the Yamato intact while plugging numerous holes in logic and volume. This really is the best possible version of the Yamato.
    Also - Spacedock's summary is dead on and comprehensive in scope. Well done, guys!

    • @logandarklighter
      @logandarklighter Před 4 lety +17

      @@icehead0123 Best guess - at least for CONCEPT - is that there was a space for the platforms to drop into at floor level that - when all the fighters on that stack were launched, was just big enough for the platforms to stack such that the top one was flush with the "runway". And that as the fighters came back aboard, the first one to land would be raised to the top, then the next one would go to the middle position, then the last platform would raise just a little bit and go flush with the floor again.
      This of course doesn't take into account that the fighters closest to the bottom drop-out hatch wouldn't have much space to taxi to drop or stop when they came back in. The only way to alleviate that would be to have the stacks be movable horizontally as well as vertically on the old "shelf" concept. Which starts making even this old grognards head start to hurt.
      Oh - and here's another thing to make your head hurt. Somehow the old bottom hanger was supposed to be able to handle OTHER standard craft landing and launching - like the medical boats and the recon planes. And the torpedo boat from 2nd season. And where in gods name were THOSE supposed to go when landed?
      No - the carousel concept is FAR superior and makes as much sense both organizationally and spatially as we are ever going to get out of this franchise. Thank GOD they updated it to this!
      As well as added the hangers for handling non-fighter craft and craft of odd configurations and displacement to the blisters on the sides of the hull. (like the "Seagull" landing craft and the captured Gamilas fighters)

    It’s really a glorious hero ship. One of the best of all time, maybe. The classic frame with all of the new tech integrated so seamlessly is really an achievement. Yamato was a failure as a battleship - she came along right at the moment that aircraft began to radically shift the prominent doctrines of naval warfare, and she was the anchor of a fleet that was basically doomed from the moment it struck at Pearl Harbor, as Adm. Yamamoto has said. It really is great to see her resurrected in shows like this one though, because she was such a beautiful weapon. Space Battleship Yamato is a great series, and if you were interested in it after seeing this review, just know that it only covers one version of the ship from one of the shows - there are like... a dozen or more, of varying quality of course which is understandable since they date back to the 1970s (this is the 2012 version, Space Battleship Yamato 2199), but some of the rest are also great. Give them a shot!
    I know it’ll never happen, but I’d love to see some of the US Iowa-class or even Montana-class get a similar treatment. I can imagine a combined fleet of say, 12-15 space battleships drawn from the great ships of the Japanese, US, UK & German navies of WWII defending the solar system and fighting back an overpowering alien fleet, dodging through the asteroid belt for cover, using the gravity wells of planets to gain speed or to hide behind in order to launch a surprise attack, taking advantage of their relative strengths to balance each other’s weaknesses, and great moments when they form up and “cross the T” to obliterate the enemy - maybe they’re fighting an enemy that has little knowledge of naval warfare, and has only ever fought battles in space and this somehow gives the underdog Earthlings a leg up on them, with ships that fought each other in WWII sacrificing themselves for each other to save the day. I mean, it will never happen... but in my mind, it’s a really cool story.
    I guess I just really love ships, which is strange considering I spent 10 months on a really shitty one at the beginning of the Iraq War (but for all the trash I’ll talk about the SS Wright, it wasn’t all bad). I wish there were more ways to enjoy them outside of documentaries that try to be action movies, action movies that make the ships just “the setting” instead of a character, video games which just focus on “collecting” them (what’s even the point of that?) and shows which turn them into cute girls somehow, which is... just really, *really* freakin’ weird. Anime concepts are like that though - when they hit the target, they can be AWESOME, but when they miss it, holy *shit* do they miss hard.
    Great review of a great ship in a great show - thanks for making it, I only wish it would have been longer and more in depth!

      @nazreenpg Před 3 lety +4

      @@lbco13 265m in original classic. I just copy paste but he explain why the remake truly make sense than the original

    One of my favourite ships of all time. Just one thing to correct.
    The task of the Yamato required it to travel to and back from the Large Magellanic Cloud within one year which has a distance of 158,200 lightyears. This means that Yamato would have to at least travel ~866 lightyears every single day. Assuming that they are making a FTL jump every single hour (including cooldown of the engine after jumping and maintenance to ensure its working fine), that's at least 36 lightyears per jump. Truthfully its probably even faster as they seem to only perform two jumps per day in an episode without combat.

      @@tennoshenaniganizer9234 with all due respect that's not entirely accurate. At the battle off Samar Island she had a chance to fight in a slugging match exactly like she was designed for. (While aircraft were involved they were armed for anti-air and anti-sub combat and were attacking the surface ships with whatever out of sheer desperation). After a volley of torpedoes made her turn away she never turned back into the fight. Funny thing is she outmassed the entire allied group they were fighting, but the IJN kept holding their battleships back in anticipation of a final stand bloody enough to convince the US to let them surrender on their terms.
      Also for all her size, her aim was shoddy. By the time they could actually hit anything with their 18.1 inch cannons they were in range range of the five inch guns the allied ships were armed with.

      @@ChakatBlackstar true. If not for Japanese incompetence and overcautious, Yamato could've done more. She fired her guns once in her whole life at TAFFY3, and that 1 destroyer and escorts chased her away with a few dozen torpedoes. She could've easily taken that entire fleet and maybe come out with a torpedo strike or 2 that she could counter flood against, but again, the Japanese were overly cautious and never gave her a chance.
      If they wanted to give Yamato or nagato or any of their battleships that chance, they should used them more boldly. At midway for example: if Yamato was part of the phase 1 fleet instead of the phase 3 fleet, she could've helped protect the carriers and used her guns on the 3 american carriers. Sure her aim was crap at that range but she could've gotten lucky and slotted an AP into a carriers citadel.

So at the same time as they were working on the most powerful, high tech battleship ever built, their navy had also been devising tactics to stop it (should someone else copy their ideas and use it against them) and pioneered the development of carrier tactics.

    • @johnweatherman5685
      @johnweatherman5685 Před 3 lety +17

      The key here is "very nearly". The Yamato was supposed to be the fleet killer, 1 ship far from home that was a legitimate threat to a star empire. However it was 1 ship, it could be swarmed, it could be over powered. In several episode we see it come close to being destroyed and it's the crew that win the day. That's what makes her so awesome. Yes, she's a powerful bird, but her crew make her something that even the most powerful empire's need to fear. But yes, as long as the shields hold, I'm not sure there isn't anything she can't fight on at least an even basis, and once she got the shield torpedoes...ok that pushes fleet killer without being totally OP to the very limit.

      @@nottoday3817 Both 1990 version and remake has their appeals; in the original they leans more on utilitarian look, while the Remake leans more on "functionality and semi-realism'.
      This is most obvious in the Remake's Free Planet Alliance ships, the engine placements allows them to omitted almost all maneuvering thrusters from their ships while still able to turn in all direction realistically. Not to mention consolidating critical machinery from generator, engines, and main weapons, into a single block instead of wasting hull volume on running power conduits between systems. This means reduced cost, lower maintenance, and less weak spots on their hull. (less maneuvering thrusters mean less holes in their armor, obviously.)

      @@Peter22055 Well, the crew did knock a battleship after covering their approach with nukes. And it was before they got a railgun. Plus, railgun could turn the thick armor of a vessel into its own weapon against the crew, creating spall.

    I was waiting for this! Thank you for showing the Yamato!

    I'm so glad you did this video. This show pulled me back into anime after about 15 years of not watching it only to fall in love with classics like "Planets", "Ghost in the Shell", "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood", and "Psycho Pass".
    Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a great show, and one to watch if you like space opera.

      The Wave Motion Gun is not a WMD. The Wave Motion Gun is the Wave Motion Gun, it's its own trope namer!

    I watched the English dub of the 2012 reboot series over this past week and holy hell was it amazing. That ship went through hell and back.

    I'm slowly getting into the series, right now I'm desperately searching for clips of them firing live shells rather than energy shots but there's so few on CZcams, love seeing enemy ships get dented before detonating and the AA shells against clustered missiles
