A key feature of the DeZURIK severe service knife gate valve is the seat ring design. Since the dual seat rings are identical they are interchangeable, rotatable and field replaceable for maximum service life. This video will demonstrate how to disassemble, rotate, and reassemble the seat ring on a severe service knife gate valve to extend service life. The same procedure applies to installing a new seat ring.
Tools for disassembling the seat ring on a severe service knife gate valve include 2 pieces of hardwood (1 cut to the seat ring diameter, 1 cut larger than the seat ring diameter), disposable gloves, rubber mallet, soft metal bar in materials like brass or aluminum, flat screw driver, 2 - 12 inch pry bars, 2 large C-clamps, medium grease and cyanoacrylate super glue. The tools and procedures shown in this video may need to be modified in order to remove seat rings on valves with densely solidified media, or on larger size valves.
We will start the valve seat ring disassembly with the actuator, topworks, packing, and gate removed from the valve per the instructions in the instruction manual. We will be working on an 8 inch valve.
Clamps may be required to get the rings loose but make sure to protect the raised face from damage with wood or similar buffering material. On this size of valve we can loosen the seat ring in the horizontal position but with larger sizes it is more practical to stand the valve vertically on the mounting plate. Clamp the blocks of wood around the valve with one piece of wood the same diameter as the seat ring and use the mallet to pound the seat ring to the side opposite the seat towards the center of the valve far enough to expose the retaining ring.
Next pry out the keystone using a screwdriver and then the retaining ring. Remove the o-ring and pry out the first seat ring evenly to prevent it from getting stuck. Next press out the seat side seat ring using the wood and clamp and remove o-ring using a similar process. The o-rings will be damaged by the seat removal process and will need to be replaced.
If the valve is resilient seated version, remove the resilient seat. Clean the seat area of glue residue and oil. Then lay a bead of cyanoacrylate super glue into the seat area. Insert resilient seat with seam at 3 or 9 o'clock position. Coat resilient seat with anti-seize compound or medium grease after adhering the seat. From this point on the re-assembly procedure is the same for both metal and resilient seated valves.
Next coat the new o-rings with anti-seize compound or medium grease and install them into the body. Inspect the seat rings for wear and rotate both rings either 60, 90 or 180 degrees, depending on the level of wear, to a new position. Insert the rotated or new seat ring into the body until it rests against the shoulder in the body using the mallet. The wood, soft metal bar and mallet can be used to help press the seat ring back evenly into the body. When the seat ring is fully seated in the body you will hear a ting sound from the metal seat ring contacting the metal body. This ensures the O-ring isn't being pinched between the seat ring and the body. The end face should be flush with the exterior face of the valve body. Make sure the second seat ring is installed far enough into the body to expose the retaining ring groove. Install the second o-ring.
Snap in the retaining ring into the body groove with the mallet. Lightly tap in the keystone near the mounting bracket until it is flush with the retaining ring. Pull the seat ring out towards the exterior of the body. Use 2 pry bars to pull the seat ring out to be flush with the body.
That concludes the seat ring replacement on the severe service knife gate valve.
Now its time to reinstall the gate, packing, topworks and actuator per the instructions in the instruction manual. When reinstalling the gate make sure the seat marking on the gate is on the same side as the seat marking on the valve body.
