  • This video will demonstrate how to quickly and easily repack a DeZURIK Knife Gate Valve.
Tools for repacking a knife gate valve include a tape measure, utility knife, cutting surface, plastic or wood square end punch, rubber mallet and wrenches.
DeZURIK provides convenient packing kits for each valve size that include the proper components for the high performance packing option in your knife gate valve. Components can include an anti-extrusion ring of PTFE or copper wire scraper, high temperature carbon graphite, square braided packing, and an energized packing cord. We will be using PTFE braided packing with an energized packing cord and an anti-extrusion ring in this video, but the procedure is similar for all packing options.
The packing repair kit includes an instruction manual, otherwise known as the IOM. Be sure to follow all Cautions and Warnings in the IOM. In the IOM you will find a table giving the proper length for each row of packing and the number of packing rows for each valve size. Valve size can be verified on the body casting.
Insert the anti-extrusion ring around the gate. Gently push the ring down into the packing chamber using a plastic or wood square end punch to avoid marking or damaging the gate.
Next, cut the packing to the correct length for the valve size, per the table in the IOM. Measure the proper length of the packing and cut the packing on a suitable cutting surface with a utility knife. Insert the packing into the packing chamber around the gate, starting on the long side of the packing chamber. Make sure the length is accurate and the ends meet with no gap or overlap. Use the square end punch to push down the packing. Use the rubber mallet to tamp it all the way around the gate until there is no more movement of the packing.
Next, measure and cut the packing cord. Place the cord around the gate, but take note of the previous packing layer joint and stagger the next layer's joint on the opposite long side of the packing chamber. Again use the square end punch and rubber mallet to tamp down the packing cord until there is no further movement.
Next, measure and cut the last layer of packing. Wrap the last layer around the gate with the joint staggered from the previous layer and tamp it down with the square end punch and rubber mallet.
Note that extra packing is provided in the packing kits so do not try to put more packing into a layer than what is shown in the table.
Place the packing gland over the gate. Insert the bolts up through the bottom of the packing chamber and up through the packing gland. Screw the nuts on both bolts. Place one wrench on the bolt head and the other on the nut. Tighten both bolts until there's metal to metal contact between the bolts and packing gland. This may require a back and forth tightening of the bolts. Lastly, tighten each bolt another half turn.
