This was very educational. I am about to install a 10 inch stainless steel knife gate valve as a pond release. Yes, I know, it's big time overkill but it was a pretty good deal. I did not realize that there was an allowable seepage rate but when I close it for the last time, I think I'll just throw a handful of bentonite past the valve before I shut it down and it will probably seal up on its own eventually. It won't get used after closing for years most likely.
