I still have a hard time believing this but Van Damme is a real legend and with a pair of professional drivers it might work.

What's truly epic is the fact that Van Damme is 54 years old, and in better physical condition than most professional athletes half his age. The man is phenomenal.

As they move his legs split but his feet still hold on you know? You would think at some point he wouldnt be able to hold it anymore just because... youre going to slip lol no what kid of shoe you have on.
I gotta say thats the most epic part, ankles are perfect too, he held on very well. It doesnt seem like they tied his feet down or anything to the mirrors. Very cool.

retiring as a driver with 2 million miles accident free, I'm glad volvo continues to improve saftey and show other companies how to advertise a product with out an ad agency and do this in house. and the drivers for this were excellent. the driver on the left actually has to move over about 1.5 meters while the driver on the right maintains 6 inches off the white line for a distance of about 200 meters, kudos to drivers for some precision driving, and threading the needle. although i loved trucking, the government with gps and satellites made the job very dangerous, my hats off to anybody who can continue to live in public housing on wheels scraping by to stay middle class with no home time and a very high probability of divorce and kids who never see the father, its a tough job.

OMG OMG OMG OMG this looks great. me loves it so much. it is outrageous. it is breathtaking because not only VOLVO is the milestone for super safety but Jean-Claude Van Damme still remain handsome for his elderly age. it looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme is ripe for its age while VOLVO is growing to be the most serious safety of them all. Hey for those of you saying that they didn't show how many attempts it took for this stunt, it's because it took only one time to do it. That's just how good Jean-Claude Van Damme really is.
JCVD for me is a legend! I grew up watching his movies and learning some of his fighting techniques, he was also an inspiration to learn karate and kick boxing. Great person, and also a great actor.

He knows his body, his body's abilities, he cares for his body and trains well. An absolute marvel to watch -- oh yeah, the Volvo Dynamic Steering is pretty kick-ass too. I'd love to try it myself. I've been trucking for over 20 years and can back up a combination vehicle better than most truckers, but that precision exercised by the driver on the right (truck on the left is a straight truck- no 5th wheel- easier to back up) is amazing when you consider who's life is on the line.
Kudos to the drivers. The trucks are moving in reverse yet the trailers remain absolutely straight. It only takes the slightest twitch since the steer axles are in effect trailing all the mass for the whole train to get wobbly
They are two different trucks as mentioned by Emily Williams in a comment above. The truck on the right hand side of the video has a trailer and does not steer at all. Only the other truck that does not have a trailer does. Nevertheless the drivers are professionals.

Not necessarily 'complete', a discussion of the safety harness would have gone a long way to address the 'omg fake' crowd.
Regardless, even with the harness, the commercial is breathtaking. The stunt, the driving, the shot, the time of day, the music and the voiceover all combine to make one amazing ad.
Actually I more impressed with the reversing skill then the splitting one.
I suck at reversing trailers. This is truly precision driving.
only trailer drivers would understand how difficult this is...my dad was one, and I grew up listening to his stories about trucks (he failed to notice im a girl, tee-hee-hee)
If you pay attention the steering truck is a regular 3.5 tons truck. The back of the truck is fixed to the tractor meaning that there are no trailer effect when the truck is steering. As the other truck driving straight backwards it is actually a lot easier to keep a steady path with a truck trailer than a small one used for cars
@@John009Doe You're about 20 tonnes out there. A steady path with the artic on the right is easy enough, correcting a turn of a few degrees difference between unit and trailer would see the unit moving around a few inches. It doesn't happen here as the whole outfit is within a fraction of a degree of being perfectly straight throughout.

I'm more impressed with the driver of the truck on the right backing up a trailer truck in a straight line without the trailer fishtailing all over the place... THAT.. is impressive.

At the point where the Volvo representative begins to explain the stunt to JCVD it is very easy to put oneself in Van Damme's place and share what must have been his thoughts, which were likely along the lines of: WTF have I gotten myself into!?!??!?!

First, this is truly epic. However, anyone else notice that when the tech explained the stunt, he used 2 model semi-trailers (LKW's), but in the actual stunt, the truck in the left is a straight 3 axel short truck? This is the truck that actually steers, the semi-trailer on the other hand follows the same line the entire time.

This was done for real and in one take, yes they are driving backwards and Van Damme wasn't attached to the trucks, there was small platforms on the mirrors, but what you don't see in the video is that van damme had a safety harness incase he fell (which is the least you would want) but it's wasn't use to help with his balance.
