- Border Runs | 🛍 Stuff I can't get in Costa Rica as a Black woman abroad | I'm in the United States for a week. Here's what I RAN to Target and Nordstrom to buy because I can't get them in my new home.
If you’re like the rest of my 150k+ subscribers, you’re thinking about moving abroad (temporarily or for good. And you’re probably also thinking about what stuff do you NEED to take with you that you can’t get there.
For the last 3 years, I’ve spent more time in Costa Rica than the United States. Here are the things I make border runs back to the US to shop for. I’m not talking about things I need to have shipped back and declare with customs. This is all stuff that fits in my suitcases. Things that make my life a little brighter abroad.

TAKE YOUR SHEETS! MAKE SPACE IN YOUR LUGGAGE! you will not regret it.
I live in CR and Stephanie is not lying about the sheets here. We were able to find a very bland but decent set in Pricemart, but that was the only place. We found some nice towels there as well. Unfortunately, they no longer have those towels. Wish I had bought more of them.
My friend is coming to visit me next week and I am going to be asking him to bring me some sheets that I left at my mom's house the last time I was - ran out of room in my suitcase. LOL
I live in Serbia. When family members visit we always have s list of stuff for them to bring. Some of those things are hair conditioner, lousianna hot sauce, chick-fil -A sauce, jell cranberry sauce, Bar-b-Q sauce, smoke sauce, Dr Bronner's soap, wigs, faux loc hair, etc. We have a visiter coming in November and we have already started shipping stuff to their house. It's cheaper to pay for extra luggage fees than shipping cost to Serbia. Mailorder custom fees are very expensive here.
WOW
Do you like living in Serbia? I have worked in the U.S. with Serbians and they were so great. Their characters were warm-hearted
You should get interviewed ABOUT SERBIA!
@@jaiyabyrd4177 I love it here! The people have been very welcoming. The language is a challenge, but I'm trying.🥰🤣
@@YogaBlissDance 👍🏾Thank you! I was interview on Dr. Raquel Daily's podcast, "Your Best Life Abroad" on Spotify.
I live in the Middle East. I traveled in May to NYC and DC and stocked up on quite a few things. I went to my personal grocery store - Brooklyn’s Park Slope Food Coop - where I can get Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap for a lot less than I can get elsewhere. I visited a neighborhood beauty supply store for hair products in Bed Stuy Brooklyn. I visited Walmart in NJ and got electric tooth brushes, mini Lysol spray, Clorox disinfectant wipes - both of which I use on the plane…. so I get it Sis. I left some of my previously purchased items - towels, face cloths - that I have stored in my sister’s basement. On my next visit I’ll get more stuff.
OMG I remember Park Slope food coop from like 30 years ago!
Good idea, I've heard expat desi women in Dubai do the same.
I can truly identify with you.Any body is coming to see me in Jamaica, get things shipped to their homes for them to bring them down for me❤
...not relevant to the topic, but omg your speaking voice is just so lovely!
Aye. I work at the outback steakhouse! Right across the street🎉🎉 Free meal if you want!
Good afternoon. Moving to Costa Rica in September, 2024. Excited 🎉
Congrats! I am here now and I love it!
HELPFUL TIP: if you have specialty items that you love at home, chances are you will not find it here or it will cost you an arm and a leg. For instance, I could not find a weighted blanket no matter where I looked. I also could not find an ovel shaped, 7qt enameled Dutch oven. I found a circle 5qt, but it was $230 at a specialty kitchen store!!!
So, on one trip, my carryon bag had three items: A Dutch oven ($80 from Amazon), a weighted blanket and my daughter's Bible that she had left at her grandmother's house that she asked me to bring. The TSA guy flagged my bag and I had to explain...😆
💐🌷Hello Stephanie.
This is such a fantastic topic for us BW who travel or live outside the United States 🇺🇸
Also don't forget to renew your U.S. passport one year before it expires‼️👍🏾
🌹🌺🌹Thank You Stephanie for supporting FBA Women 🤎🖤
your favorite knife, in your CHECKED LUGGAGE.. just one chef's knife and paring knife.
😂😂😂 "There's bugs on your eyelashes right now!"
No truer words! Girl, you are too much!
Hello, recently found your channel. Don't travel much but I really enjoy your videos.
Hello. I’m currently in Costa Rica, on my very first visit. It is a scouting trip for my family to hopefully move here. I love it here. Currently in Escazu, and moving in a few days to Limon, which we’ve heard so much about. We did a walking tour of San Jose, and I am very impressed with the city. But my family likes the beach more, so onward and upward.😊😊
Hey! I currently live in CR and I can say that all of the beaches that I have gone to are beautiful. I will say this though, living by the beach is more expensive in general - especially if you want central air. That said, in most places in CR, you are never but so far from a beach. I've not been to the Limon side, so I cannot speak for prices there, but I know the high electric bill having central air will still apply.
Amazon does deliver in Costa Rica..I looked it up.
Missed your video because we are on the houseboat all summer. Watching now. Stay safe.......... Just the 2 of us 😂🎉😂
Good morning Stephanie and Sisters ❤️🙏🏿
Good afternoon Stephanie. I finally figured out how to make comments.
Watching the replay. I've been MIA lately, but still here to support! Happy belated birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉
Have you ordered from 32 Degrees? They carry some of the stuff at Costco, but ordering direct is great. Leggings, socks, undies, and base layers: this place is my go to.
Polenta (Italian) in package or produce great sub for grits 😊
Watching the replay. So proud of you Stephanie! You are an inspiration.
She really is!
I live in Costa Rica and most goods, other than food, cost a lot more here as they import most things. Somethings I have had to learn to do without or just have to pay more for. However, there are other things I just grab from the US when I pop back.
SHOPPING LIST from US to Costa Rica:
1) Tea bags. Yes, they have tea here, but not a good variety of caffeinated teas. When I can find familiar brands of US tea here, it is soooo expensive, so I just stock up when I am in the US. They have tons of coffee in CR, though hardly any decaf coffee.
2) Office supplies/stationery. Even at the Office Depot here, you will not find the variety of things that you are used to in the states and a lot of stuff they do have will cost more than you wanna pay.
3) Basic electronics like chargers, keyboards, headphones...etc. The prices here will blow your mind!
Good morning to you Stephanie as I watch your video from the future. Wow! Thanks for posting at 7 am. ❤
Love the necklace!
Goood morning from the future! Catching up on the replay Stephanie! 👋🏾🫶🏾
Bugs don't like mineral oil. Put it on your door and window seals.
😀
Bugs in general?
These two women right here are living their whole lives. Their, whole lives.
Good morning from Panamá!🇵🇦 👋🏾
Hello and good afternoon from the DMV!
Definitely going to miss my Costco Kirkland Signature toilet tissue and paper towels when I move abroad, but will start this summer with trying to wean myself off the paper towels.
Try Swedish dish clothes as a reusable replacement for the paper towels. 😊
Absolutely understand because there has been some trolling on other excellent Black Utube programs
I know I’m late but believe it or not Automercado was and currently still is selling 100% cotton sheets by Kenneth Cole. I was surprised because like you I need good sheets (soft and breathable) and have been unable to find them
Hello. Your hair is awesome.
In San Jose CR there is a beauty supply with a good bit of goods we need. I was shocked
Watching the replay - Thank you

Hello, watching the replay. Awesome tips, we always want to know how to keep our hair right! If you will be staying in 1 place for a while, it’s worth it to dedicate a checked bag with necessary hair & beauty products.

Hello from the future
Hello 🙂
I love my charin
Hola
I looked this up Amazon delivers in Costa Rica..Is there a reason you don't make your purchases thru Amazon?
Technically, Amazon does deliver directly here, but is complicated, limited and way more expensive. Also, no free delivery. It is better to just grab stuff if/when you are in the US or ship to friend/family member and have them use a freight forwarding company like DHL, UPS, or FedEx. Also, there are other options that are specifically used in CR by way of Miami like Tiendamia or Box Correos.
Hi
🌼💐🌼
Hello
Lume is a LIE. Did not work for me at all in Jamaica
I purchased a few LUME and didn't like the smell at all.
hello
what do you mean, no flushing?????
Greetings from South Florida 🌴. Please consider a travel opportunity with your fans. Also Rashida😊✨
Love your chest plate.
“Ya wall art is dumb…I hate it!” 😂😂😂😂😂
This is so me! I’m not staying nowhere ugly 😂
YOU SISTER HAVE BEEN OUT OF US TO LONG. THEY LOCK UP THESE ITEM DUE TO HIGH THEFT IN MAJOR STORES
Sometimes you can’t get over a fear, but you can learn to coexist with it. I have a fear of digs, but I’ve had three. of them. I got the first one in my late thirties. I had a few times where they moved too fast and I jumped. I knew it was important they not notice I was afraid of them, so I worked on myself. Now, I’m comfortable, but if I visited and you have a dog, lock it up.
...if we're willing to become acquainted with another country, then the other things will be easier. i use this one question to myself, "is it worth the trade-off?" what am i willing to do without or seek alternatives as i try to prioritize what my freedom from hostility means to me. 😘
If the wall art is ugly and stupid...and dumb..😂😂😂 that made me holler.
Stephanie, I enjoy this channel very much and I’m also an African woman however, I’m not comfortable with you only emphasizing black women in all of your videos. I understand it’s the “niche” you chose probably based on some personal experience you had but I just wanted to say that all/most of the topics you cover affect women of ALL race.
This is something so typical to the US where everything is based on race😢. I think women go through a lot already in society that it’s not necessary to divide us like that. I typically don’t follow channels that put so much emphasis on race but I’m only here because I just signed up for trusted sitters. I hope your perspective eventually changes.
She’s an African American woman speaking from her native perspective. She’s unique in how her approach is because it’s primarily geared towards fellow AA women, who have been imprisoned by toxicity in their jobs, lives, etc. Sure, her message can be relatable to other cultures outside of the US, as you have mentioned. But here in the US, race is inescapable and not optional. I don’t believe that Stephanie would be her authentic self if she didn’t express herself as she is and knows. Hope that makes sense!
